I bit the bullet and updated from my 8800GT and bought my first non Nvidia card since my Voodoo days.

I missed a couple of generations from Nvidia as I didn't think it was worth upgrading; I can only guess that it would have been in the 20fps mark.

Nvidia 7800GT - 2005 Run #1- DX10 1680x1050 AA=16xQ, 32 bit test, Quality: VeryHigh ~~ Overall Average FPS: 3

Nvidia 8800GT - 2007 Run #1- DX10 1680x1050 AA=16xQ, 32 bit test, Quality: VeryHigh ~~ Overall Average FPS: 10

ATI HD 5870 - 2009 Run #1- DX10 1680x1050 AA=16xQ, 32 bit test, Quality: VeryHigh ~~ Overall Average FPS: 34

I think my system may be a slight bottle neck now.

E6850 3.0GHz

4GB

Windows 7 on 10,000Rpm Raptor.

Even though I have only used Nvidia since the Voodoo days I wouldn't say I have been an Nvidia fan boy.

Just had never had any problems with them so didn't bother with ATI.

Though that has now ended for ever...........

Its a fresh copy of Windows 7.

GTA4 had around the same average with 95% CPU, which is what makes me now think the CPU can't keep up.

Only installed.

GTA4

COD4

ARMA2

FRAPS

7-Zip

VLC

Haven't defraged it since putting the games on.

It will be intresting to see how much difference an i7 3GHz makes.

But can't afford to do that right now, shouldn't have bought the card either really.

duo processor so dont see why it would be using that much CPU

My credit card looks like the hooker from My Name is Earl.....

Well and truly used.....

Looking at CPU-Z

Ram PC2-600 (400MHz)

x4 @ 1024MB

timings table #1 270MHz, 4.0, 4, 4, 13, 15, 1.8v

timings table #2 400MHz, 5.0, 5, 5, 18, 22, 1.8v

I don't know why the table shows 2 settings.

Well, just to give you an idea:

My specs:

i7 920 at stock speeds

6gb 1333mhz OCZ ram

GTX285

WD 750gb 32mb cache hdd

Win7

Ran at 2560x1600 on all high settings, 16xQ AA

I average 35fps - I lost all my saves after a reformat but if someone can tell me how to recover these saves (I only reformatted my boot drive, games saved on a separate partition) I can probably bring up a nice fight scene and give you a more accurate score.

Does Crysis also have a benchmark test?

On the topic of shiny auscam...

the sound they made while bush walking made it seem like I was doing mean things to little furry animals inside my pants :p

Lol, I ran Crysis on max everything at 1280 x 1024 on:

XP pro

E6600

2 Gb RAM

8800GTX

Ran at 30-40+ frames at all times except for when you were scoped in and cloaked which for some reason made the FPS plummet to ~10 FPS which I put down to a very badly optimised graphic effect when cloaked and scoped in.

Turn your resolution down a bit if you need to, increasing your resolution even by a small amount increases the strain on your graphics card enormously.

You really need a better CPU to go with that new card BTW.

Looking at the Bit-Tech.net scrores.

It is safe to say that there is a bottle neck in my system costing me atleast 20fps.

If it was just a CPU up grade I wouldn't blink at it.

But then there is the motherboard.

The Ram

The CPU cooler.

That can wait for Xmas.....

Providing I am a good boy and avoid any more speeding tickets this year I might treat myself.

Thanks for the $900 RUDD....

But it wasn't nearly enough to cover my tickets !

=)

when you installed the card did you use the drivers from the cd that came with it or download catalyst drivers from the net ?

Isin't there like 9.9 now? or is 9.1 some sort of special version?

80 Degs is cool , they can go up too 100 i believe and scale back at 105 area? But i leave my fan on 70% all the time and you'l get like 50c if you got a factory overclocked blah blah custom heat sinkage.

And if anyone didint know, it's 9 for the year, and 9 for the month. So 9.9 version! I think thats how it works, every month theres a new version anyway of Catalyst.

getting mad for peoples amusement
