A few things:

What area are you in?

What are the most important aspects to you of:

- Price

- Quota

- Reliability

Do you upload a lot?

Do you use VOIP and/or have a VOIP enabled router?

When I said area, I meant suburb... so we can ascertain if ADSL2+ is available at your exchange.

Once we know that, the choices widen or shrink considerably. :)

So if you could link me back or just tell me the name of which exchange you're on, that'd help immensely.

Choose a plan from Internode or Westnet. Both ISPs provide good performance and decent service. BroadbandChoice is your friend.

IINET ..

You can bank on good quality support and if you are a loyal customer who has a good history with them they ~will~ uncap you if you ask them too..

Has happened to me more than once , twice , thrice...

IINET used to be a no contract basis i am unsure of where it stands now but they are good as an all rounder ISP

AAPT - Unlimited OFF-Peak D/L $49.95 if bundled with home phone. 20gig Peak unlimited between 2am-8am

Monthly $$ for me with internet plus home phone $95-$100 As I dont make many home phone calls.

Well if iiNet have their DSLAM in your exchange and it isn't full, they're pretty much your best bet because you'll really come to appreciate the 1mbps upstream when uploading files (4x your current 256k upload).

If you make a lot of calls, then the iiTalk pack may be for you since you get unlimited* local and national calls for free... but it's only worthwhile if you're currently spending >$50 on just your phone stuff per month ($29.95 iiPhone + $20 iiTalk = $50) otherwise just grab the iiPhone one with Home 5 which will give you 70GB for your total spend of $99.95. If you go the iiTalk then to stay under budget you'll go Home 3 which will give you 35GB per month but unlimited calls.

Post up your attenuation figures (+ SNR) and I can estimate your ADSL2+ linespeed for you

Well from a long term iiNet customer who is now stuck with Optus and I have been with Internode too for quite some time. I can tell you your on the money with iiNet, great price, server, reliabilty, downloads and the rest.

I would be happy to recommend iiNet to anybody anytime aslong as they are on one of their DSLAMS.

Anyway that first bit was just to help you make your decision and to help you stay away from Telstra Bogpond and Optpiss.

My suggestion to you would be to get the cheapest telstra line $19.95 I think and get the iiNet VOIP package. You do not need the phone package to get the cheaper iiNet pricing and higher downloads, VOIP is counted as bundling. I can't see you saving money by having a iiNet phone connection as it costs more than the telstra one and you are only going to use the VOIP for phone anyway. If you are a heavy phone user I think the iitalk plan is worth getting but the VOIP prices are good.

I would not opt for a contract if I was you as the only benifit is $80 off your modem which is DEFINITELY NOT worth being locked in for 24months. Go get a Billion 74** router which is top of the range in ADSL2+ products and you can get a one for about $120, this will also improve your speeds over the Belkin one we got from iiNet. The iiNet router is a rip off and if their router firmware isn't 2 - 3x better than it was on the first one its best off getting a good one which will be cheaper.

My 2c, any questions let me know.

Edit: Freezone is better than any other ISP, people will debate Internode is better but its not. http://freezone.iinet.net.au, westnet free content is also included so you get a couple of steam mirrors, if you like Xbox Live all content is free, all itunes content is free. Any file you can think of that is gaming related and not illegal is also free: http://www.gamershell.com/ http://www.3fl.net.au/ (If the file isn't listed on gamershell I had it listed on the iiNet mirror within 24 hours by emailing them.)

Im changeing ISP aswell to iinet, From what ive heard theyr cheap and reliable.

I would Check Westnet out aswell as they are good, a friend of mine has an ADSL+2 Plan from those guys and his internet is wonderfull.

How do I figure this out? I live in Goulburn, NSW and want to switch to iinet.

Sorry Madhouse, no dice on that one

Those are the ADSL providers available to you :)

Telstra ADSL1

MySoul

Telstra ADSL2+

You can get ADSL2+ from the following resellers of Telstra/Mysoul:

- Spin Internet

- Primus (don't do it)

- EscapeNet

- Comcen Internet

Not sure about any others... until Optus or iiNet DSLAM your exchange, there's no a whole lot of choices sadly :(

Almost the same ISP as iiNet, the are in partnership and share services to my understanding.

Madhouse: It might say you can get ADSL on your connection but that is not ADSL2+, there is a big difference and I would not be going with iiNet for their ADSL1 plans.

iiNet are definitely the go, never had an issue with them. Check your phone number at the website to see if you can get ADSL2+.

Them or Internode, heard they were tops as well.

CaptainCleanoff on the servers.
If you can only get ADSL1, then Internode are the better provider of ADSL1 plans afaik.
