umm i am thinking of getting a new card for my b'day , i was looking up some cards and i noticed that ATi tend to have better specs for a a lot lower then their Nvidia counter parts ( bang for buck ) , but however most games tend to favor nvidia software

Should i stick with Nvidia or defect to ATI , i am leaning towards ATi ATM

Mate i am ONLY speaking for my past issues NO ONE ELSES

Nvidia is the way to go in my eyes.... specially with intel based systems..

i have only had 2 Ati Cards and both gave me hassle after hassle and gave me half my lifespan. (compared to my later Nvidia Cards)

NVIDIA and my opinion for brands.... Gigabyte.. others may say yay or ney but i have NEVER had a problem/DOA/DEATH with ANY GB stuff ever.. so....

theres my 2 cents

I has had both in my computering days. Both have been good and it really depends on what specific models you are looking at.

Here's a similar chart as to what I used and read heaps of reviews

HERE!

I chose the Nividia GTX 275 because it was cheaper then the others and punches WELL above its weight (Crysis all on very high with no lag anyone :p)

Personally Ill stick with Nividia after seen comparative prices and performance

Love you long time gunner <3

I like to wait till im nearly done, then pull out and yell "COVERING FIRE!!!"

Ahhh. Im so glad I have a GF and she doesnt read these forums...

There is NO BETTER BRAND they both produce sound products and at any one time they are offering different cards with the usual quality's one looks for in computer components.

That said I personally think the ATI 4800 series is the best bang for buck cards on the market and the moment and I have a SAPPHIRE ATI HD 4850 512MB and frankly it does the jobs I ask of it prefectly and without flaw and was very cheap compared to the Nvidia cards when I brought it.

Fair enough statement but I would put a fair bit of that down to user end issues. Regardless of which brand you buy its up to you to look after the product. I have had no issue with the life span of any of my ATI or Nvidia cards because I look after my case and my software.

Nvidia has the best performance if you go the very top of the range, they just cost more than top of the range ATi.

and as you may have seen some games don't support Ati properly and you have to download an ATi fix or live with weird bug but this is a small range of games.

i love my ATI 4890 does everything that i tells it to, and it was pretty cheap

though i did have my nvidia 7900gs for 4 years till i replaced it, so im sort of on the fence right now. havent had my 4890 for long enough to decide.

Horses for courses I've used ATi cards but prefer the quality and performance of the top shelf NVidia cards.

My case and parts have always been kept in top notch, and as above said... compatibility issue with programs.. would have been the preferred comment to use in my original statement.

also.. ATi uses programs to OC where as Nvidia OCing is Hardware coded.. i am not sure how to put it.. as an overclocker, its nice to know hardware knows whats its doing rather than a program in a OS telling it how to act..

I have always gone Nvidia for gfx cards and my last gfx card purchase was an ATi, their cards can perform but thier software support really lacks from drivers to having to download ATi fixes for games. And it has frustrated me so much.

Go Nvidia

Well the forums say your birthday is the 23rd, and the 22nd is apparently the release day for the the HD5xxx chips... so I'd say save your money that would be used on your birthday, and spend it 20-30 days later and pick up at HD5870 or if you're not willing to spend $600, go the HD5850 which should be around 4890 prices and performance, whilst using less power and looking a whole heap cooler :)

http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7429/5800c.jpg

That's right, you're seeing a single HD5870 (overclocked) beating the $800+ Crossfired 4890s and 2x gpu GTX295, so I'd say it's worth the wait :)

edit: They look pretty sleek too IMO

The most important thing to ask you Magikz (I can't believe no one else has) is what card/system do you currently have, what games do you want it to play. And the big one ...... how much $ do you intend to spend
I like both. Have an ATI card atm and it's ace. ALTHOUGH... ATI's Catalyst Control Centre that manages your drivers and config have made me rage uncontrollably on more than one occasion.

Here is a list of particularly awesome things:

dogs

sniping

very spicy chilli

cat claws on people (but still cool on cats)

I've had both now of video cards and cpu's for name brands. They both make good stuff and each make gear better than the other at the time.

For example right now I have an i7 but was really happy with my old AMD 3800+ and was happy with my 7600GT.

My HD4890 is awesome! Plus it beat the nVidia cards in price by quite a great margin meaning I could afford my i7920.

I bought all the magazines and asked the good people here a lot of questions and I now have a nice PC that was not too expensive.

Special thanks to Evilrooter for showing me and helping me put it together.

Yeah, but you won't be seeing those until 2010 from what I've seen posted on various forums, although Nvidia might rush them out asap if the HD5xxx series are as good bang for buck as they seem (as long as the 5870 is <=$600 then we're talking MAJOR value for money)

I'll be going 5870 or 5850 and if Nvidia's gt300 architecture wipes the floor with it, wait for the price drops and upgrade to that in the new year :D

Holden or Ford ? Fosters or VB ? Blonde or Brunette ?

Meh... it's all about context... and what gets the job done efficiently...

Nvidia or ATI ? I can say that I have used both and that both

have done the job fine. I use Nvidia now. I had an Nvidia

card burn out on me a while back but I am happy with

what it does. I can't afford to upgrade with every new bell and

whistle which comes onto the market.

There are so many issues of the components of your whole

systems and software setup that it such a pedantic issue

of whose digital schlong is longer, to me, that I am just happy

with what I have and couldn't be bothered overdoing the

details. Those who enjoy such things, feel free - I just get

tired of it. :)

Nvidia has performed a little better for me but mainly because I have

used more expensive Nvidia cards than the ATI ones I used to have.

The best card I've ever owned was an ATI 9600XT, followed by an nVidia followed by a 4870X2 from ATI. I've had no luck with the last card, performance is good but the two cores seem to cause all sorts of problems. I'd say get whatever is cheaper and looks best on Toms GPU charts.

As others have said, neither is better over all. Depending on the time frame, new technological developments and supply and demand the balance see saws back and forth between the two.

That said I think ATI is producing the best bang for buck cards ATM. If you are looking to buy now I would recommend crossfire or X2 4800 series cards, they are dirt cheap.

just as i thought , ATi is bang for buck right now. hmm i could wait for next generation nvidia to make the price drop , but by then my b'day would truly pass

good thing graphics cards are not like processors , cause it will be a bitch to upgrade. If only processors had a common socket

thanks for the input guys

You would be happy with a 4890, nice card and affordable.

Nvidia's 9600gt (low end), GTX 260 and GTX 275 (mid range) all have pretty good bang for buck too, so saying ATI is best bang for buck right now is not entirely true IMHO. Saying that, I'd probably go a 4890 ATM myself.

Go with either, I say - just grab what you can afford at the time. Gfx cards are superceded daily anyway so you can never win, best to grab something and enjoy your hard-earned b'day money! :)

Different games are optimized for different cards. Using one game as a benchmark is silly because both ATi and Nvidia both excel in a range of areas.

Quoting myself as you seemed to have missed it. Absolutly no point in buying the best without having the supporting hardware.
