Posted June 29, 200915 yr http://www.news.com.au/business/story/0,27753,25705597-462,00.html Car maker BMW's new ad banned by advertising watchdog Kelvin Healey Herald Sun June 29, 2009 11:20am http://www.news.com.au/common/imagedata/0,,6693972,00.jpg Off track ... artist Robin Rhode and director Jake Scott with the BMW Z4 / File LUXURY car maker BMW has been left in a spin after its new "artistic" television advertisement was banned for encouraging hoon driving. Australia's advertising watchdog outlawed the ad for a BMW convertible because driving stunts shown in the clip would break Australian road rule laws. The ad features the BMW Z4 coupe creating a giant artwork in a warehouse by driving with painted tyres, and includes the vehicle spinning its wheels and skidding. The clip, which has been used around the world, was made by artist Robin Rhode and famed film director Ridley Scott's son, Jake. The ad sparked a backlash; one viewer told the Advertising Standards Bureau and Channel 9 the clip "would encourage car hoons to spin and burn their tyres." The watchdog banned the ad on the basis it depicted illegal driving. "The board noted that the advertisement does depict in a number of places the driver intentionally allowing the wheels of the car to lose traction and perform ... a four-wheel drift," the bureau's judgment said. BMW hit back, saying it was art, not hooning. "We believe the audience can distinguish between fantasy and reality," a statement from BMW to the board said. BMW spokesman Toni Andreevski said the company accepted the decision but believed it could have successfully appealed. "It is a bit of a case of a piece of art and the freedom of art being thwarted by Victoria's anti-hoon laws," he said. "It is a shame that artistic expression would be caught by a quirk in the legislation. ''Safety is important to us, and we have agreed not to appeal." Mr Andreevski said the company was disappointed it had been branded for hoon driving. Interesting that this ad has been on tv for months and they only decide to pull it now . . . That's bureaucracy in a nutshell...nice find btw. I dont know, its just a hunch, but people who are gonna 'hoon', i think maaaaaybe might 'hoon' irrespective of whether bmw has an ad with some dudes doing doughies with different colour paint on the tyres... its good BMW hasnt challenged tho. Let the legislation have its way and leave everyone scratching their head... http://www.bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/spambot.bmp http://www.bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/whatthe.bmp The Bee Zed Zed

June 29, 200915 yr Author Re: Gee the Govt Agency is reeeaaaaaallllllllyy yyyyy quick on this one... one of the comments posted makes a good point, why is it you tv stations can broadcast The Fast And The Furious which is all about ILLEGAL street racing, yet an ad which is done inside a wharehouse (NOT on the roads therefore road rules dont apply) gets banned for showing a burnout? something tells me that there is a bit of a glitch in the standards there, or is it because TFATF is fiction and all ad's are classified as nonfiction? June 29, 200915 yr Re: Gee the Govt Agency is reeeaaaaaallllllllyy yyyyy quick on this one... Just saw this on TV last night in NZ for the first time. Its kinda funny tho, when they ban commercials everyone rushes off to find them which means more people watch them http://www.deadlycombinationclan.com/anaraith/sig/rotate.php FEAR ME I AM PITA BREAD
June 29, 200915 yr Re: Gee the Govt Agency is reeeaaaaaallllllllyy yyyyy quick on this one... A simple side effect of living the the most over governed country in the world. Besides if it was done in a warehouse and not on the street then that would classify as private property and is not subject to road laws anyway. That is like banning the Grand Prix for encouraging hoon driving.
June 29, 200915 yr Re: Gee the Govt Agency is reeeaaaaaallllllllyy yyyyy quick on this one... Someone would have complained about it. The Government doesn't do stuff like this off it's own back, they do it because of public pressure. Remember that "Bugger!" Hilux ad from the late 90's with the blue heeler? That was a classic and got censored because of language and then pulled because farmers were complaining they we misrepresented in it. Alot of people scream bloody murder when the goverment does stuff like this but they're just a reflection of us as the public. There are worse places to live with worse goverments. Here is a list of particularly awesome things: dogs sniping very spicy chilli cat claws on people (but still cool on cats)

Alot of people scream bloody murder when the goverment does stuff like this but they're just a reflection of us as the public. There are worse places to live with worse goverments. Sure we can live in Iran for example but we live in the West. Compared too all the other Western nations we have severe controls on what we are allowed to see and do. For crying out loud who takes the time to put little black stickers on all the good bits off a legal copy of Penthouse!?!?!? The government is not a reflection as much as you think. Do you really think that the majority of Australians like paying $24.99 for a six pack of Bundys? More porn and sex shops than Amsterdam and strict regulations forcing people to get porn in illegally. I could go on and on. Australia is the fourth Western nation I've lived in and I grew up next to America so I've got first hand comparison experience. It's getting pretty silly here. A vocal few whiners wreck it for all of us.
