October 9, 200816 yr She was the first USN ship I ever visited and the first time I had met the USMC in Australia - back in about 1981 or 1982 when she was still clean and new! Man, I had fond memories of being allowed to tour the ship unescorted (!) and being allowed to play with an M203 in the hangar deck. I so wanted to be a Marine back then (embarrassment now, cool when you are a 14 year old!). Thanks for the pics ER ! http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/armouredservice.bmp

When i lived in Freo (early 80's very late 70,s) the USS Enterprise and Midway visited and couldn't fit in the harbor, so had to park out in gage roads...i visited both and spent the day running amok with my mates:) Un escorted we helped our selfs to real American Coke outa the fridge on the bridge and cookies fresh outa the oven in the mess...err galley. October 9, 200816 yr Thanks for posting Ebil Rather impressive. There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. October 9, 200816 yr I remember one of the first times I visited Sydney when I was a young lad with my family my old boy had his nice new Nikon with him and we walked past the naval shipyards. He was telling us a story about his friend who was at the time the captain of one of the missile frigates and so we went on a little hunt for his ship. We found it in all its shiny glory and decided to take a few pictures to record the moment. We were there for a bit say around 5 minutes getting the family in the photo and the usual things you do. When we here this shout and a "You stay where you are" a couple of Military Police are yelling at my dad. The come over give us a little jibber jab about it being a secure area and that we can't take photos and to give them any photos and film we have. My dad had a good yelling match with them which I think was fair enough because all of the ships we had taken photos of where birthed outside and we were on a public street. The MP's wouldn't have a bar of it and said we had to forfeit all of the film we had, however we managed talk them down to just the one in the camera in the end since we had the rest of out trip on the others. A little later on we told the story to the Captain who's ship we had taken photos of he had a good laugh and said he wasn't surprised. We of course were a little perplexed his ship wasn't very new and just looked like it had a new paint job that was all. He explained that it had to do with a number of retro fits it had just undergone including something to do with its missile payload and layout. SOOOO that's the long story behind why I always thinks its a crook of **** that you see some many high resolution images of all this military hardware everywhere these days. Other than that she is a nice looking ship and Jim's right could use a little love with a brush and a dry dock. Top pictures Evil do you work on the yards ? http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Signatures%20and%20Banners/VisP.png

Enterprise is currently homeported at Norfolk, Virginia. As one of the oldest carriers in the fleet, she is scheduled for decommissioning some time in 2012-2014. October 10, 200816 yr I have spent 8 hours on the USS Carl Vinson CVN70. I was a 'crowd controller' at a pub in Hobart where the US Navy ships come in quite regularly on their way home from the Gulf. Anyway a few of the guys made my pub their local, for the 5 days they had shore leave. After about day 3 I got to know 3 of the guys really well and they invited me on to the boat as their visitor for a day. (As long as I brought them some Dominoes) Anyway I met me mate Mark on the docks at 12noon and we caught the ferry out to the boat... One of the guys worked in maintenance and the other guys were deck crew. They toured me around to the cool areas that the general population werent allowed to visit like ready rooms, pilot quaters and the maintenance bay where one of the guys was working on a gattling gun from a F/A-18's (Vulcan) Gattling gun... this thing was HUGE! Next we went to their accomodation, which was dorm type thing with 4 bunks high and very close together. But in their lounge area they had beanbags, cable tv, and XBOX's which I suppose kinda makes up for it. Next we did a tour of the deck, and hangars. The hangers were cool, never seen so much military gear all in on place. And then we saw some guys being lead in chains, wearing bright orange coveralls. They were the guys who were being excercised whilst in the brig. For doing bad things whilst on the boat. We got up to the tower and the guys were all of a sudden sheepish, I asked why and they told me that the coloured lines on the ground represented who was and who wasnt suppored to be there, and only one of them were able to go into the tower. But the guys thought bugger it... and took me into the tower.... we kept looking round, and got higher and higher. then we got to the point where even Luke (the guy who could go into the tower, wasnt allowed to go any further), but Paul said stuff it.. I cant be demoted any lower than I am... and he said lets go.... We went down a small coridoor, and was greeted by a dude in white officer gear asking us who we were and why we were here. Paul said "I have my mate from Hobart here and we wanted to see what was up here, and wondered if we could take a look?" The guy turned to a guy standing in the middle of the room, who shrugged and then nodded his head... WE WERE IN!! I was then given a one on one tour of the bridge of the USS Carl Vinson! I have a photo of me holding the helm. its awesome. Problem is I have them as like real photos as they were taken on a film camera. I am motivated to pull them out scan them in and post them here for you guys to see. Anyway I finished the tour with dinner in the galley, and some NBA on the telly in their lounge room. It was about 8pm and the last ferry was leaving.. I caught it in and then was buzzing from my awesome adventure.... The next day the guys came ashore and I took them to meet kangaroo's and koalas!!! So it all evened out in the end.... Anyway Ill get the photos scanned and post them on here soon. Edited October 10, 200816 yr by gerda jatwood

Many a time at airshows have I had to surrender film or files. They do eventually get returned to you if you are polite. They get a bit narky when you don't ask first, which I think can be pretty reasonable. Anywho, nice pics E. Should move to Newie, you get over seeing them pretty darn quick round this way. It is one of Australia's greatest camouflaged areas. People see them that often and never take notice http://users.on.net/~mperrin/images/les_mis_kindros.png You're all wrong, and I am always right, and the sooner you accept it, the happier you will be. October 10, 200816 yr Hmm i reckon theres prolly a 240lt 3-cylinder turbo-nucleardiesel pumping out 475Hp and 57nm torque driving a fixed single blade prop There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.
October 10, 200816 yr Just says steam turbine on its main webpage too lazy to dig any deeper. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Signatures%20and%20Banners/VisP.png
