Dont mean to rain on the parade[as I have been watching the SOPA situation closely:but this is very much in keeping with the NDAA-National Defense Authorization Act.

They are taking away your fundamental rights as human beings;this ain't just about the internet,it's about the way we live:The NDAA is a cousin to SOPA

Check them both out:they are the most Important Bills Passed in the USA which will affect us ALL.....I know,I can already hear it:"Wacky conspiracy theorist etc etc"......

But look this stuff up:I cannot stress how important this is.

This is about the stripping of Civil Liberties.

With Obama already on record as describing the US constitution as" Outdated" etc[A euphemism for"we need to change the damn thing"]

It HAS started in the US[Presidential candidate John Mccain[[remember him?]]actually drafted the bill with the latest amendments]

The military in the USA have now Police rights:they can search, arrest ANYONE they want,if they feel the person is a "threat"....and keep them in custody indefinately.

So,in the future, just for writing what I have written in this post,I am a candidate....

Make all the assumptions about my stupidity/absurdity you want, but it HAS happened....a lot of references for you to check and see if I lie....Type NDAA and see what you you get.

The Terrorism banner will ultimately mean:Anyone Who Questions Authority

Between all the heat shimmer and flags i cant see either

I hope pipa goes too. How can America criticize Iran and China over censorship when they try to do the same thing?

It's been a lot of years since I think any of the world powers have seen the view from up there.

I think you will see this challenged in the Supreme court in the US as a gross violation of the 1st amendment. The good thing with the US congress can pass a law but can not change the Constitution. So things get passed and then thrown out.

Obama may think the Constitution in the US is outdated but he needs the majority of the people to agree to a change through a vote good luck with that one.

Yes,apologies:Written hastily, but after re-reading it,I cant see that my grammar obscures the point I was trying to make....

Well,just a bit.

Had a decent convo with the old's about this last night with the usual question "why should we care, it doesn't effect us does it?"

Yep it does, when they can issue a takedown notice for something they dont own copyright on, there is no recourse back to get the takedown notice lifted, DNS blocking etc...good times...

What it ultimately means is that with the power can stop you from seeing what you don't want to see... Problem is Australia used to be the lucky country now we are lucky we have any freedom, we aren't USA and have no Constitution we are what the government tells us we can be and that's a bad thing.

I would not call it fear mongering.

It is the place of the people to see that our rights are respected at all times, even from those who we elect fairly without issue.

Australia has a Constitution what we lack is a Bill of Rights similar to those which have being created else where in the western world. Without similar strong laws or rights put in place it is possible for a government (either here or else where) to put in place laws which take away freedoms the people expect to be sacrosanct and fundamental to their ongoing life.

Now the counter argument is the opposing or minority political party's will always fight to counter a majority government which might want to remove certain freedoms. Because the people will not elect any one if they feel they are being misrepresented.

However we have already seen to some degree how easy it is for a major political party to trumpet one set of ideals and yet back flip on those very ideals as soon as they are in power.

Example right now.

After the 2010 election, Mr Wilkie made a deal with Labor to introduce the poker machine reforms in return for his support for the minority government and set a May 8, 2012 deadline for the legislation to pass.

It seems likely that we will see a shift from one side of what is essentially an election promise to a completely different side. I'm not trying to make it an Australian problem nor am I saying Mr Wilkies point is moot. They can't be compared it's just an readily available example I have used to prove a basic point.

We must as individuals let our opinions be known to the powers that be that we are not happy with the course they have set out for us.

Doesn't matter what it is. It might be a little thing in your local seat or something as large as the SOPA and PIPA bills in cause and effect. Still speak up or don't expect to be counted. Especially in Australia where we don't have the same sort of hard-coded rights as elsewhere

(Read up on the Constitution of Australia and lack of Bill of Rights here to see how something like SOPA or PIPA could be shattering here.)
