North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il dead at 69

NORTH Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, the leader of one of the world's last Stalinist states, has died.

The death of the 69-year-old leader was announced on North Korea's state-run newsagency KCNA.

It said the leader “passed away from a great mental and physical strain” on Saturday while on a train for one of his “field guidance” tours.

KCNA said Kim died of a “severe myocardial infarction along with a heart attack”. An autopsy was performed yesterday.

His death leaves the impoverished, nuclear-armed hermit kingdom notionally in the hands of his youngest son, Kim Jong-un, who is in his 20s.

KCNA called on North Koreans to follow the dictator's son.

“All party members, military men and the public should faithfully follow the leadership of comrade Kim Jong-un and protect and further strengthen the unified front of the party, military and the public,” said the news agency and a weeping TV announcer.

South Korea shifted its military on to an emergency footing following the TV announcement.

Kim's death plunges the Korean peninsula, where some 1.7 million troops from North Korea, South Korea and the US are based, into a period of possible instability.

While information from within North Korea is scant, reports suggest Kim Jong-un has battled to assert his authority within the regime.

The elder Kim had battled health problems since a stroke in 2008 and may have also contracted pancreatic cancer.

The son of North Korea's founder, Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il presided over a regime that ruthlessly killed and imprisoned political enemies and kept the world guessing with its repeated provocations with South Korea and attempts to develop its nuclear arsenal.

Hmmmm very interesting. I don't blame South Korea putting its Military into 'emergency footing' either.

To quote a friend (who may have aped the quote from someone profound?)

You should only speak good of the dead.

Kim Jong-Il. He's dead.

Good.

Knowing Kim Jong-un, the next few days will be interesting.

Would not be surprised if the US also decides to move some of its military.

Kim Jong-il, he use to be alive once, just like you . . . but then he took an arrow to the knee . . .

I use to be in Rhodesy's thread, but then i took an arrow to the knee (o;

seriously tho, i think the situation on the peninsular there will be pretty hairy until the North sorts out whose the boss (pref not Tony Danzer!). Their mo appears to be whenever there is instability in leadership:

a) launch a rocket

b) walk away from disarmament talks

c) threaten the South, Japan, etc

d) all of the above.

Not going to happen ladies keep your nickers on.

BTW same dead dog was beat TWICE in 2010 once when the ROKS Cheonan was sunk and again after the Bombardment of Yeonpyeong you all didn't get deployed after either of those this isn't any different.

Ohh and the food in Korea is better than the dried Camel hump you would be getting in the Ghan and more people speak English also did I mention the girls are prettier.
