RMC - Duntroon

Quick question has anyone here being through RMC - Duntroon or does anyone know someone who has recently?

The reason I ask is I have become some what confused as to how long one is required to attend the RMC and what its relation is to ADFA. Take note this only relates to my proposed entry as a Army GSO. I was talking to LT COL Ham who is in fact now my step father go figure. anyway as i said I was talking to him the other day and he mentioned I would be required to spend around 3 years at ADFA earning my degree in either Art, Engineering or Business management as well as about 12 months at RMC as opposed to the 18 months at RMC I thought I could do and march out as a Lieutenant. He also mentioned I would march out as a 2nd Lieutenant which is contrary to some of the information I have seen.

As you might have guessed I would much rather do 18months are RMC then a combined 4 years at ADFA and RMC even if it means I do not get some sort of degree from ANU.

Details GSO Full Time RMC - http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/army/jobs/GeneralServiceOfficer/MilitaryTraining/?entryTypeId=13

Details GSO ADFA - http://www.defencejobs.gov.au/army/jobs/GeneralServiceOfficer/MilitaryTraining/?entryTypeId=3

All in all I am bloody confused. If no one has answers here I will ring my bloody recruiting coordinator.

Cheers mate I need to go see my mate Arrow he is a Signals Corp officer up here in QLD. Really surprised me when I found out he had joined the Army especially as an officer. Can't figure out if he did 4 years or just attended RMC. Conflicting information is fail information.

Yeah you get that, but expect more of the same from DFR . . . good ol' "left hand/right hand" story there . . .

Last I heard and according to mates that have gone through both streams its 3 years at ADFA (plus time spent at RMC) gets you a degree and the rank of LT, whilst just doing the 18 months at RMC gets you a 2LT.

ADFA being only open to applicants with a high enough ENTER/TER score, whilst the 18 month RMC open to anyone (though does have certain requirements) since they are not providing you with a free degree.

Ohh you mean like them telling me I was ineligible to reapply for 1 year when I was in fact ineligible for 2? Jeez that was fun. Here I am talking to some poor lady and shes all yeah come in at such and such ohh wait why does it say 1 and 2 here. I'll call you back ........ a week later I call them. Ohh did you call us its 2 years now don't know why it said 1 see you next year.

I am a mature age entrant so I should not have to worry about OP/ENTER/TER score what ever you want to call them. I can walk into any pretty much all of the kind of "entry level" university courses. Obviously if someone like myself who has pretty terrible with maths went and said I'm want to do this course in theoretical astrophysics that would probably raise some eyebrows but then again if I paid in full I doubt to many university's would knock me back if they had the room.

That said I don't have to pay and its kind of redundant because I don't necessarily want any of the degrees that are supposedly on offer.

As for marching out of RMC after 18 months as 2LT doesn't seem to be the case according to the recruitment page I linked earlier.

Graduates are commissioned as Lieutenants.

But who says they mean " First Lieutenant" and not "Lieutenant" refer previous comments about conflicting information is fail information.

YOU THERE JOIN THE ADF.

Umm sure what do I get if I join.

Okay, straight from my mate (2Lt)..

"if you go in direct entry, that is not through ADFA, its 18 months"

[edit] - once he has finished his conversion training he'll be a Lt, but after RMC its 2Lt.

they are right Vis.

Going though ADFA earns you a higher rank upon you 3 yrs at ADFA, and 1 year at Duntroon, and also a higher pay grade for the same rank. Plus you also get a degree under your belt, and get paid to study. Only negative is you have a larger IMPS.

Going through Duntroon as GSO means you come out as the lowest officer rank, 2nd Lieutenant. All this means is that you only have to do 18 months, and your in the army as an officer. Quicker way in if you just wanna do 10 yrs or so.

Really?

After completion of academic study at ADFA, cadets proceed to the Royal Military College, Duntroon, to complete a further 12 months of military studies before graduation as an officer into the Regular Army

If you don't go to ADFA (IE - UNSW not ANU)

After 18 months intensive training, RMC graduates are commissioned as Lieutenants in the Australian Regular Army with developed skills that are second to none.

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/4453/bear2inq.png

okay.... vis,

RMC is 18months... you go in as a GSO and while at RMC you select corps preferences as to what officer you want to be.

These positions in the CORPS are non technical jobs. Things you need a degree for you have to go to ADFA. (explained later)

On completion of RMC you are a 2LT (but could be LT now), which really means you are a LT because the 2LT rank is slowly being phased out and you are really only a 2LT for 12 months or less before LT promotion. depending on what corps you choose / get sent too, you will then complete a little further "on the job training" which usually happens in those first 12months after grad from RMC. basically a little extra stuff that is job/corps specific stuff.

Does that clear RMC up?

As for ADFA its just like going to any university except you get a secure, good paying job when you graduate. You do summer holiday gigs over at RMC while you are at ADFA, and finish off what ever officer training is left after your degree usually 12 months.

ADFA officers are like dental, medical, psych, specialist engineer (aeronautical, structural.), Pilot (one way), architecture. I dont think ADFA offers everything but you can attend other uni's and still apply as officer and stay at your uni and degree course (ie medical).

So your time at ADFA and vary from 3 to 4 yrs or longer sometimes.

when applying for RMC you can appl for either GSO or SSO

GSO - General service officer is basically what it says. you get corps preferences and you basically get sent where the army needs you. From Infantry, artillery, armor, to signals, ordnance and transport.

SSO - Special Service officer is mainly for people that already have a degree. mainly for Doctors, dentist and such which ADFA does not directly offer. Also SSO can be another entry way for Pilots. but i dont know all the details for that.

Pilot applicants can get a little more complicated.

hope this helps Vissy!

HEY VISONE

ive been in several jobs over the last 25 years & after now managing a plumbing supply business for the last 16 years & getting to know how the trades work.

i would fully recommend doing the 4 years it takes to get what ever degree, wether its through adfa or through normal university.

so if your young 4 years really means nothing.

However that 4 years will shape your life, as that DEGREE will give you a great wage & the life style you want.

That degree opens doors that the rest of us cant get through & you will be earning a middle income wage or better within several years.

So to put it in reality you will get the income at 30 that the 40 odd year old glorified counter jockies get.

(which boosts your superannuation dramatically.)

that 4 years will fly by , whereas the rest of us can only dream of what we could have become if we had been steered in that direction at a young age, instead of just thinking about the money!!!!

+ 1000 to what BrigJackOneil said. Do whatever the hell it takes to get that degree if it is humanly possible, you'll never regret it.

Also - definately no such thing as 2LT anymore...

Here it is simple for you or whoever wants it straight up.

General Service Officer - Royal Military College Duntroon (RMC) - 18 Months

GSO with a degree - ADFA/RMC - 3 Years~ + Completion of RMC 12 months.

-----------

Doing ADFA and getting your degree doesn't mean you have to use your degree in practice in the military. Some guys go to ADFA and do Aeronautical Engineering and become an officer with an Infantry Unit.

ADFA is just University of New South Wales that is on a Military establishment (Part of RMC). Its pretty much like normal uni except some mornings you get up and go shooting and you have military living and routine but the study isn't any different.

The benefit to this is you get paid more, the more qualifications you have relating to your military profession than normally the more you get paid.

Also if you get to ADFA you get a FREAKIN MASSIVE PUB !

:hi:

lol, thanks Poncho...

And damn you Vis, cos now after going back through my info of GSO, i now want to re-apply as GSO and just do 18 months Duntroon. Can always do uni on a P/T basis while you serve. You just acquire more IMPS. Mite let my 12 month medical restriction run its course, complete my TAFE, and then go for it.

Also a side note, but anyone thinking of joining the ADF into the Army, or have recently joined, i can give out a few handy tips that may be useful to you. I have had enough experience with different bases and different training. Just PM me, or jump on TS one night.

(P.S. you will have to be in the ADF for me to tell you most the stuff as been a past serving member, you are not allowed to publicly broadcast info, except for tips to help you have a better chance for those joining)

Cheers for all the feed back guys.

Here is quick run down of and answers to some questions and a little general knowledge to let you know where I am coming from.

I am 24 and a qualified Chef currently employed as Sous Chef in one of the colleges with the University of Queensland . My current position is the equivalent of Sgt if you look at a kitchen brigade as a para military force. Myself and a few others have said it before and will say it again a good kitchen is part military part motley crew of pirates. As such I really only have one person who I answer to directly which is the head chef. She makes the rules I enforce them, when she is away I lead the kitchen as if she was there anyway. Its arguable if I have the experience to hold such a position because usually a Sous Chef has being in the industry for more than 6 or 7 years.

I have become a little disenfranchised with the hospitality industry as a whole. I feel there is a real decline in the professional side of the trade and that it doesn't present the same career opportunity I originally thought it did. Further more I was worried that when I start a family in the near future I would constantly have to juggle unreasonable work hours and pay to try and be with them. So with that in mind I went looking for other jobs that would satisfy my needs and put me in a better position with more pay, more benefits and most importantly be an entertaining and fulfilling job.

So I applied to the ADF in April of 2009. Long story short I got knocked back on my psych test because the Army Psychologist said I was too introverted and had anxiety attacks. Now for those of you who know me will see right through the first part I'm not introverted I not really an extrovert. I'm kind of as in between as I can be. I believe some things a personal and should be kept that way while other things such as this are worth opening up to people so you can garner strength from your friends and critics. You should not be afraid to get out there and have a go meet new people and move on with your life. If you are then you will never try and never change.

Right obviously I got knocked back and the Army Psychologist in question put my application on hold for 2 years. I can reapply in April 2011 which I intend on doing. I reason I put this thread up now was that I was talking to my brother who had applied for reserve officer some years ago and my new step Father who is a Lt. Col with the Transport Corp mentioned over dinner the other day that I must do the 4 years. I said that's not the case but they were adamant about it.

I don't particularly want the degree In Arts, Engineering or Business Management. As I have mentioned I am 24 I will most like not make it into RMC until the 2nd induction of 2011 which is in the 2nd half of the year. I would rather do 18 months and become a career GSO for some time while I work with more senior officers to obtain the position I am after. I want to be a Environmental Health & Safety Officer. I would like to obtain any degrees and qualifications I need whilst in the Army so I can help the federal government and in particular the Army and ADF become safer more environmentally friendly organisations.

Don't get me wrong I'm not a balls to the walls eco nut I just believe we have a debt ourselves, our children and those who will come after us to look after the land and leave Australia as the beautiful place that it is today.

If I can't do the Environmental Health & Safety Officer then I'm sure I'll find something else as a GSO that contents me and I will continue with that. As the Lt. Col has mentioned as a GSO if you really get the ****s with what your doing you can always ask for transfer out to a new position elsewhere. Not really the case as a SSO if you go in as a doctor or radiologist then you are dam well going to be in that position to you leave.

Thats about it.

Thanks again for the feed back and information nice to see half of you have no clue as well. It would be nice if they made if the ADF made there information a little clearer and less open to interpretation but hey it is federal government after all who am I kidding.

Do they not offer any other degree besides the ones you mentioned? I'm sure a degree like environmental science (or maybe just science) would assist you in getting that role.
  • Author
It is my understanding that you are some what limited in your choice of what you can study initially. I could certainly do something like environmental science in the civil sector and then transition into the Army. Either after completing the degree or even only having completed part of it. But that would be contrary to my not wanting to pay for Uni ethos. :p

Be sure to tell them that next time you apply.
