mortars in .95

evening all.

i have been sent on a little fact finding and straw poll mission.

what i need to know is what you all think about the introduction of mortars into the PR game environment. Do you think this will benefit PR or will it Damage PR? what kind changes do you think this will cause?

how do you think this might effect game play?

is this a direction PR should be heading?

i would love to hear your considered opinions please.

(and yes i know .95 has not been released yet, and no body will have used them.)

well considering they are used in real life I believe they will have a positive impact, but there will also be difficulties with usage on 'common' points etc.

Also, I think that it would be best to leave this conversation till they have been used in and by the community, as of right now, it's mostly skepticism.

yeah but this is the internet' date=' you have to expect the unexpected or else you'll get caught out by things you should've expected but didn't. Its exactly like knowing about the stuff you dont know about, that way you know theres stuff you dont know so when you know what you dont know you can say "ah i knew that!"[/quote']
i would like to see mortars in pr. a trial run to see what efect to game play and tactics to see if the comunity likes them.

If they make it complicated and requiring members form other squads then I dont see it being very popular. I am only gathering this information from the video posted on PR tho.

So I voted "No Change" for the time being.

I think it's a concept that could lure previous regular players back out from their RL hidey holes 'cos it's certainly got my interest!

On the topic of shiny auscam...

the sound they made while bush walking made it seem like I was doing mean things to little furry animals inside my pants :p
I think it will be a good change. Might break the odd deadlock and keep people on their toes to 'shoot n scoot'.

chan just becuase its used "in real life" dosnt mean its always good... in all honesty i think they should stop trying to add all these "toys" and shiz to keep people interested, i mean there is what max of 32 a team? when you have so many things to use that widdles the number of men actualy on the ground as inf down to maybe a 2 sections or so, on a big map thats not much... just seems to spread the team out to much imho...

but then agfain im a inf whore.

no change

Chan and I were talking about this the other day. It will have little effect on day to day game play. The most effective way they can be used is not dissimilar to how you use IED's. Except instead of placing the IED you just dial in that intersection/bottle neck or what have you and wait patiently for your spotter to call in the strike. I mean really who is going to stand around having a chat near a Techie long enough for someone to work all the dials and gauges to get a first to third strike?

All in all hardly the dynamic mind blowing/game winning thing some have made it out to be.

People defending caches, and people defending firebases on Insurgency. Ideas come to mind like the castle on Archer which the Canadians/Taliban often take to have views over 80% of the map but it really comes down to how much defense will play in 095.

You really don't like PR do you Rhodesy :p

its a love hate relationship :p

if used properly it shouldnt be used on choke points AT ALL! it should be used for taking out strong points and large hostil positions not for scoring easy kills at a river crossing.... should be used to soften targets b4 the inf go in, or for forcing the enemy out of good firing positions...

Other than UGLs (which are comparatively weak but extremely mobile), Attack Helicopters and Jets (which are used offensively), mortars will be the only form of readily available indirect fire support that can support in both defence and offence like other deployables.

I think this will be used just like we currently do for the off map mortar / arty / Jdam calls, just a lot more often. It will also be another thing for the opforce to find and destroy (i.e. I think it will be a good thing).

The idea of pummeling an area where a cache is suspected to be prior to launching a ground assult appeals to me! I agree that it's unlikley to be practical to hit troops in the open (unless they are setting up a FOB or something), but hitting static targets / hardpoints will be fun.

Hopefully it will be yet another thing in PR that will force the all important "team work" and "co-ordination" thing that we all say we love, but that we kind of not really do that often [head down wait for the flame thrower...]

I agree with Rhodsey tbh.

This will be just another excuse for a squad to setup a FB in A1 and wait for fire missions - meanwhile the Armour squads will be chasing phantom enemy tanks in H8, which leaves Inf squad to get carved up on the flags.

IMO PR needs to get back to platoon sized engagments... Mortars would be OK without the other distractions.

Deployable fire for effect will be handy. I don't imagine that

ridiculous amounts of ammunition will be available and there is

obviously a fair degree of technical jiggery pokery involved in

calibrating the mortars so it may discourage deployable-asset whores.

We won't know until it is played out.

I know it's going to make the ridge sitters on Kashan happy, and probably piss us bunker infantry off more haha.

But we shall see for everything else, I don't see it being too bad, seeing as it''s only going to be mostly useful against static targets, and hopefully some restraint is shown on known cache areas in insurgency and there not just continually spammed.

I'm quietly excited, and once uni is over I'll be back into PR like a madman. If deployable mortars are available, then that's a bonus.

If they had smoke ammo in addition to the normal rounds, that could be excellent.

Mortars will be the best thing since sliced cake.

Lets face it - on maps like Kashan, there's about 3 or 4 pilots on the whole of BigD with the skills (or smarts, maybe) to keep those birds in the air for more than 20 seconds. So, mortars may be the only form of indirect fire support we have available at any given time.

Keep in mind too, most likely they'll get whored for the first month or so after introduction, so be aware that the over-use of mortars as soon as they are introduced will not be indicative of their true use in normal gameplay.

It will be a true test of Teamwork skills though - using mumble to communicate to FAC about bringing fire down on your section will be awesome.

I reckon no change, I don't know how they will be used so I can't say if it will be positive or negative... Hopefully positive, because as said before it's kinda cool watching those explosions ring out across the valley.

BTW, how are they planning to implement this? Are the mortars deployable from FB or what? (Please don't flame, haven't been here to read anything..)

Maybe I should rephrase that Rhodesy. I meant to say; They are used in real life, and thus I can see the reasoning behind the need (or want) to implement them.

I think ingame its going to be people scoping up intersections or targets and wating for those troops to pass through, the only other way is when it is effectively used by people like dtacs who are willing to go sit on a hill and mark targets for the whole match and do the boring work.

But like I said its hard to say anything and I would rather wait and not have opinions judged until we see them in aciton.

Can't bloody wait for them! Love the idea of being able to call in a strike and have an area pummelled before making a move.

It looks far too complex and indirect to be overpowered. I personally can't wait for an asset that can break stalemates and bring a new element to gameplay.

Short of some new gamemodes I think that's what PR needs the most. Indirect fire support is a huge part of modern combat, and yes, you can say PR shouldn't have vehicles or what not but heck, having them on the battlefield makes for some insane combat - I wouldn't have PR without them as much as I love infantry combat.

Each to their own. To be honest, watching a squad of infantry and a tank disappear in the dust cloud of a JDAM or a bunch of hellfires afer coordinating on TS with Elmo or Buzz (etc) is very, very satisfying.

I never really liked the idea of mortars when I first heard about them being implemented. I felt it would take too many players away from flags and out of the fight. Now that I've seen them, I'm excited to try but I still feel the same way.

Anyway, rather not need them and have them available then need them and not have them available.

It will be good eye candy and a good edition and will be over used in the months after release.

Between having the armour lovers squads/ Sniper and spotter squads / Heli transport squads it means two more grunts are gone from the frontline as infantry.... Which is a shame

Without compensating and increasing the 64players (Not possible) base allowed on a server it means PR takes another small step towards an Armour mod on some maps.

That said it be overall welcomed but would have to see it's game play and usefulness and how many Friendly fire accidents happen.

No vote casted as i would have to see an in game experience
