Hey guys.

 

I'm sick of Vista, so I decided I want to get Win7. So today I bought an external HDD to do some backups, and I'm going out again in a little while to get Win7 Home Premium Upgrade.

 

Anyway, I just want to know what I need in the way of drivers and stuff to run the computer when the reformat has finished. I was going through this site and I came across this bit

Windows 7 Setup does its compliance checking before the phase of Setup where you format the disc. (Unlike with Windows Vista.) This means that you can format your existing hard drive, and blow away a previous Windows version, and not worry about activation. If it was there, Windows 7 will still activate.

 

So anyway, I know I'll need to backup my programmes, music, videos, photos and documents. But what do I need to download in the way of drivers and important stuff like that. My laptop came with a disc that I think has drivers on it, but it is for Vista. Will that make a difference?

 

Is there any BIOS fiddling around when you reformat?

vista drivers (usually) = win 7 drivers

 

depending on how old your computer is (last 4 years) there should be no bios fiddling

alrighty, so just pop that Vista disc in when Win7 gets installed and it should update the drivers and stuff?

Alrighty, what other ones do I need. I already have the latest GFX driver downloaded and installed. I'm assuming that when I reformat, and use the disc it will go back to the old driver.

 

What others things will I need to find the latest driver for?

your mobo, sound card, chipset drivers

I've been looking around and I've found this post on the ASUS forums.

Firstly, I would like to say that Window 7 is epic!

I've just installed Window 7 RC1 on my M50VC.

All the drivers, except one, are pre-installed out of the box and through windows update!!

it's so simple! The only "unknown device" is the Infrared Receiver.. which i 'm still trying to find and frankly never use.. unless i'm getting myself a remote control for it! but other than that.. drivers installation is basically non-existence!

 

Secondly.. trying to find the infrared device drivers..

Well I always prefer to get the drivers myself from the manufacturer's website, because the windows update library is oftentimes outdated.

 

If you go here after you've formatted and reinstalled, you can grab all the latest drivers for your model, 32 or 64 bit

Ok, so what I'm going to do.

 

1. Back up all the files I still want onto my external HDD

2. Put the Windows 7 Home Premium Update disc into the computer and boot from the disc.

3. Follow the prompts for a custom installation, but I will enter the key only after the installation has finished.

4. Once it's installed, I'll put the Vista Driver disc in to update the drivers and stuff.

5. Go to the driver download site that Psyrus mentioned and download and install the drivers.

6. Ninite the rest of the those programmes.

7. Put all the documents and files back.

8. Finish the tech assignment!

You only need to do step 4 or step 5, not both. I'd recommend step 5 over step four but I might be a bit biased.
