Posted January 11, 201015 yr I have known, since my days in phone tech support for an ISP that many Anti-Virus programs can be a pure pain in the arrrrrrse for system stability and many other program's smooth functionality. I had a problem for the last year or so where when playing PR I would get stuttering performance - small laggy-like pauses in the video and audio every few seconds during game - but only at the beginning of a round (for maybe 20 minutes) and then randomly in clusters for a few minutes. So, it made life in the PR universe very difficult at times... I disabled my Avast (free) on-access protection while (i.e. before) playing just recently and paint me blue and call me Shirley if it didn't fix the problem. AV programs are (or can be) very, very naughty but this small fix has saved my PC from the chainsaw, shotgun and sledgehammer that I was about to invest in to fix it... no spanking was ultimately necessary... just deactivating some components and reactivating them when stopping play. (Game Booster does not deactivate the specific components involved). any other PR-related AV problems and/or their solutions ? please discuss Edited January 11, 201015 yr by mandatory05 "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
January 11, 201015 yr Hmmm, thats weird. I was using AVG but swapped to Avast because it got some good reviews on whirlpool. Never had a problem with AVG Free, my dad was even using it for his office at one stage. The only problem I've had with Avast is one update caused it to find like 50 different trojans which just turned out to be normal programmes doing normal things, but they fixed it pretty quickly. Haven't had the stuttering or anything when playing, everything is enabled and running as far as I can tell, and I also use Ad-Aware, and Super Anti-Spyware at the same time. So I have all three running at once and no problems with anything.... http://i.imgur.com/DtNdckc.png [WC]Xavo|xXx:
January 11, 201015 yr I use Norton 360, I got it when we bought the missus a lappy. It's a royal pain at times and I turned off most of the functions because it was always giving me annoying messages or dropping me out of game to let me know that something was out of date by 20 minutes..... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. January 11, 201015 yr Norton it burns us! it burns us precious!!! see this thing below? http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/qq306/McDethWivFries/10ftbpole.jpg its my 10' barge pole an I wouldn't let that anywhere near a Norton product! January 11, 201015 yr I always run with on-access type scanning disabled for this reason. The cause is that on-access virus scanners will actually scan all files as they are read by other processes - including all of PR and BF2's files as they're opened and read by the game while you play. Obviously this places a burden on the CPU and disks and means the application (BF2/PR) has to wait for the scan to complete before it can use the file - hence why it screws things up. January 11, 201015 yr got trend micro and get a pause maybe once twice during a game, but the pros out weigh the cons, love trend micro, havnt had a serious problem since having it. http://i.imgur.com/TLiDl.png
January 11, 201015 yr What's wrong with Norton? your Canadian so i'll forgive that remark nah seriously, the only Norton product i've had no issues with has been Ghost, all others are just a pita being resource hogs and also have a tendancy to behave like lice in a WW2 trench when you try and remove them, no matter how hard you try there is ALWAYS some part left behind which requires a rebuild to remove in the end. Trend AVG Nod32 (ESET) are my prefered choice for av programs . . . i would've listed McAfee as well but they seriously bloated it in the last couple of releases making it the bastard child of Norton in a way. January 11, 201015 yr Yeah Norton is a resource hog, good thing my rig is a bit of a beast so it hasn't been too much of an issue as yet. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. January 11, 201015 yr Yeah Norton is a resource hog, good thing my rig is a bit of a beast so it hasn't been too much of an issue as yet. Although, mine isnt such a beast so can someone ploz save me with a free alternative that doesnt suck on the balls? I know, norton is shameful, take pity and halp? I think it caused me to disconnect twice last night, but im not sure... January 11, 201015 yr I used to use AVG free and it worked great. Oh and Spybot, Search and Destroy. Gets rid of malware etc. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake. January 11, 201015 yr NOD32 +1, I still have 1614446 days left on that free trial you sent me ancient.. http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee118/bahlye/bahlye007/mouse_zps73307fb2.gif
January 11, 201015 yr What's wrong with Norton? I do have to say though, it hasn't picked anything up that AVG free couldn't do. Iv had bad, bad, bad experiences with any Norton anti-virus stuff in the past. I just use AVG now. I found norton to be very resource intensive and it just did stupid **** a lot of the time (unneeded popups, blocking things on default, very hard to uninstall and remove completely from my system [i lost the CD], blocking sites/actions that boggle the mind, treating me and my PC like a Kindergarten kid)... Good Conduct http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/goodconduct.bmp
January 11, 201015 yr gah norton is the worst thing evar AVG for me... always disable it when playing PR though as there is a guaranteed 100+ ping increase for me http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/2111/shotgunreal.pnghttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/opagamahons.jpghttp://www.bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/lol.bmp Love you long time gunner <3 I like to wait till im nearly done, then pull out and yell "COVERING FIRE!!!" January 11, 201015 yr For lolz im using microsoft security essentials. Its lightwight, free, and i never notice it. I havent had a problem and ive been using it for a few months now. And yeah smokejumper norton is the spew...
January 11, 201015 yr Best freebies IMO are AVG and Avast - although you have to register for Avast it is still free. http://i.imgur.com/DtNdckc.png [WC]Xavo|xXx:

January 11, 201015 yr I don't use an antivirus (other then the occasional scan), although I work in the field.
