Okay, I know Vis is/was into W40K (table top version) etc etc. Thought I'd start a thread on 'tips n tricks' for painting and customising your minatures.

Currently very slowly going through to process of painting up my space marines into my army colours:

1st Comp - Chaos Black & Boltgun Metal(?) with Mithryl(?) Silver highlights main colours

2nd Comp - Crimson Gore & Golden Yellow with Sunburst Yellow highlights

Main Forces - Hawk Turquoise & Skull White

Found this vid on Youtube for painting up Space Wolves which has some pretty neat ideas

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwCfzaE-T_I]YouTube- Painting: Part 1/3 Space Wolves Terminator[/ame]

The thing thats always bothered me is the fact you pay $6 for a tiny tub of paint if you go Citadel paints, anyone tried using any other hobby paints (Tamia etc?) of similar colours to the Cidadel range? If i remember I'll post some pics up of them as i go along...

Citadel paints are way over-priced but the hobby is pretty expensive which-ever way you go. I use Vallejo (EDIT:whoops) paints because they cover and thin alot better. Their range is massive though and can be confusing. Citadels metals are superb.

yer most, if not all Citadel items are expensive, even their paint brushes are fairly over priced at $9 i believe, when they should be like $2. in saying this all Citadel items are very high quality.

Aye, Tamia colour tends to have a bit more variety than the games workshop stuff, but it's also usually a bit thinner, whereas the GW stuff just... works really. I used a mixture of both for my Tau army, colours turn out fine using either though.

Man I should really get around to finishing painting my miniatures but I am such a perfectionist it takes me about a bajillion hours just to finish one guy. A fair few Space marines still unpainted and sooooooo many orks.

As for paints I have found that the citadel ones are a little better than most, yeah they are expensive but if you can afford the hell expensive miniatures in the first place you have no excuse for skimping on paint. Also make sure you undercoat everything properly before you paint them, it really helps and so many people simply skip it.

Yeah! Here's some mini's I converted earlier this year from FW models and green/white/brown stuff.

And like a true hobbyist, no, they still aren't finished.

any chance this could become a modeling discussion thread in general?

dont see why not as thats pretty much all i use my W40K stuff for, have the 2nd edition rules but none of my mates are into it so dont play. pretty much any tip for W40K or other forms of modelling should be 'cross platform' transportible (o:

was going to post a few pics of what i've managed so far (which isn't much) but the flash is too bright and i'm to buggered to be bothered fiddling with it.

lol this was me when i first started with my ork army, and they look pretty sh*t. having a good black under coat just makes the model look soo much better.

Those models look really good as well bishos30!

i played a lot of fantasy back in the day when I was younger. Iv got a smallish Dark Eldar army which Im slowly (as in, once a month or so) painting at the moment cause me and a few mates like to have a quick game once every while when were hungover, broke, bored etc

I was a pretty mean Fantasy player, still a massive noob at 40k.

Farsight Enclave. My Army was in deep Maroons and Crimsons with Blue, white and black detailing. I'll post a pic of my Hammerhead Gunship when I get around to blowing the dust off all the models in my cupboard.

Oh, And it's ULTRA SMURFS! ...........Because I hated marines with a passion.

As McDeth mentioned earlier I used to play you have already touched on one of the many reasons I do not play any more. Games Workshop merchandise just cost way to much. The paints, the miniatures, the scenery and even glue is just over the top. The only thing they sell which is well priced is their omnibus books from the Black Library. I'm currently reading the second Space Wolf omnibus.

Before when I did play I used to collect Tallarn Desert Raiders, Catachan Jungle Fighters & Biel-tan Eldar. If I had the cash and the time I would most likely create a Salamanders strike force and Death Korps of Krieg force. Because I think they would both do very will in the new Planet Strike game expansion.

haha, i (very badly) painted mine in a dark green jungle camo. :)

As vis was saying, it just cost too much so i stopped. plus im really lazy :p

But my favourite stuff by far, apart form playing games, was to make scenery, its practically free cause you can make it from anything if yo know what to do.

The netting you get around bags of apples and such makes a really good fence if you spray it silver/grey...

you're only limited by your imagination when it comes to making scenery! cardboard, plaster of paris, glue, sand, wire mesh and some paint and you can pretty much create anything.

Yes but take my advice always CUT AWAY FROM SELF! I have an 3 and 1/2 inch scar from surgery I had when I was around 14. Because one day when I was using a scalpel to make some scenery I managed to cut all the way to the bone and through a tendon in my left index finger.

i once talked to a guy visiting from the actual GW place at my local GW and asked him why the prices were so high, apprently the moulds used for even the smallest parts cost upwards of $500,000, like the artisan crafters who etch them out take painstakingly long, which is why they have such a high price.

but still, i'll stick to scale models :)

just finished my ASLAV, crappy paintjob but i like it none the less :p ill try and find a pic...

I understand the development costs side of things but it does not explain why the prices are going up not down. They have spent the last 10 or so years investing and creating new/easier to produce plaster blister frames and are slowly moving way from the older metal products they used to create. Your getting more now than ever but the prices have not gone down even 1 cent. You can't blame it on shipping or handling fee's either because they would ship in huge quantity's. Hell with the prices they ask for a $500,000 mould would be paid off within half a year.

Anyway rant aside more power to them. At least they have not gone under like so many other company's and have created a fresh and exciting product range with a very compelling story both in Warhammer and Warhammer 40K.

Now if only they would recreate another Warhammer 40K Epic scale game. I like DOW and DOW 2 but the scale is still to small they really should save the small scale 2000 to 4000 point games for the table top and save the 5000+ for video games. After all who has the time or money to build an army that large and field it often? Do it in the virtual world create massive battles with every unit conceivable and they could even add Battlefleet Gothic games into it. Imagine if DOW 2 had 4 times larger battles and no cut scenes for when your going between worlds instead you needed to fight space battles as well for control to land your troops.

Well if we all won lotto...

but yeah, i miss a bit of the old 40k...

And also vis, games workshop have been around for bloody AGES.

i have a retro role playing game that me and my brother used to do a bit back around 6-7 years ago, called paranoia. I didnt even realised that it said games workshop on the front until i started up my fantasy army properly.

And its from around the 80's...

I know how old they company is hell Rouge Trader the original Warhammer 40K was released in 87 and even earlier than that their was Warhammer Fantasy Battle back in 83. The individuals who were originally behind the company have worked for other older Dungeon and Dragon type games developers since back in the 70s. That in it self is no mean feat but like I said its only being in the last 10 years or so they have moved away from solid metal miniatures and into the moulded plastic frames. If they had gone the way of Forge World and used resin moulding then you would expect to see the prices they are asking for.

BTW have a look at this.

Yeah prices from GW are stupidly high, i still remember reading in the mag when they said "we've developed a new method of casting the miniatures, unfortunately it means the price will rise by 15%", then about a year later they announced the same thing. The quality of the miniatures didn't change, they still looked the same as the old lead ones but yeah. Hell i remember when you could pick up a dreadnaught for $20-30 instore and the character Blisters were $9.95 (oldfartsyndrome working its way into the typing sorry...). Found the best place to purchase 40k gear was ebay. Still get the odd paint etc from GW but have a stack of Tamia paints to use up on my scale models.

Oh yeah, anyone with the old metal style miniatures that want to redo the paint job on because they were seriously noobish like me when starting out (no undercoat, no watering down of paint and the thicker it went on the better because 1 coat is heaps more terrific than doing 2 or 3!!!!), my mate and i were given an old trick from a bloke in either Stanbridges or Perth Hobby Center. Basically what it is is this.

Put your model into a cup/bowl and then pop in one of these tablets

http://www.epharmacy.com.au/images/productimages/7908/150.jpg

(dunno if the ones we used were 'tripple action original' or not but it was a steradent tab anyways)

the time factor i'm a bit hazy on, but i think it was you do it before you go to bed, leave it in overnight then take em out in the morning. it also worked for the plastic models too but you had to be on the ball with em or else the detail got eaten away. rinse it off under a tap with a reasonable amount of pressure and you should be back to a near new painting surface.

plan to try and do up one of my 1st Company blokes tonight or finish off the capt of my 2nd Company. Will take a couple of shots with my phone as the photos from the digicam are a bit too harsh.

There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.

i can't vouch for the plastic as i can't really remember... but if you use acetone it will lift the citadel paints straight off the metal.

use at your own risk!

okay, some shots...

basically a snapshot of various models framed with the fabelled "Emperors Grace" gothic candle in the background . . .

http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/qq306/McDethWivFries/21122009298.jpg

hawk turquoise & skull white is the standard legion colours of my Wolverines Legion

chaos black & boltgun metal with mithryl silver highlights is the colour scheme of the Wolverines "Guard" of the 1st Chapter

chrimson gore & golden yellow is the colour of the Wolverines "Dragon Knights" of the 2nd Chapter

Brother Capt Stern model (front left) is used as the Legion Master of the Wolverines, taking the Psycannon from the Grey Knight (base model for a Company Captain). You'll also notice there are two 'old school' Grey Knights models on the right.

the model i'm working on tonight, is a character from the Raven Guard, but I'm using it to represent Dracule, Chapter Master of the Wolverines 2nd Chapter - Dragon Knights

http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/qq306/McDethWivFries/21122009301.jpg

rather bad shot of my 1st dreadnought, Enigma. Painted standard Wolverine Legion colours. never really finished it and the paint has chipped badly in spots so i'll be redoing it again (the other dreadnought - Blood Angels Furiso(?) is being painted in the "Guard" colours). nb - markings all painted freehand including dreadnought name "Enigma" on the powerfist arm altho being such a bad pic its hard to make out.

http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/qq306/McDethWivFries/21122009302.jpg

box showing the models i have in the house atm, there is another couple of boxes in the workshop with the remaining models and vehicles that i'll get out and go through once i've finished this lot off...

http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/qq306/McDethWivFries/21122009303.jpg

Okay, progress with Dracule, Chapter Master 2nd Chapter. Basically just painted the lightning claws, jump pack details and trimmings with Golden Yellow, Chaos Black was the other flavour of the day . . . not a huge amount of progress due to distractions with Shaun Of The Dead, and wishing for a paint pallet to stop the paint from drying out too quick as well as better lighting /o:

thats it for now as i need to get off to bed and read some more of my "Brothers Of The Snake" 40k book
