Watching the 7pm project as i type and they are talking about taking people that have been involved in Street Crimes do service in the defence forces to get them off the street and out of unemployment, not for full combat overseas but for aiding Australia itself without leaving the country.

Cant be bothered getting a link with more info.

My opinion on it is i think its just community service where you can get money for if you clean up your act.

If it suggested that these people serve overseas i would be against it for the obvious "learn from the past" excuse.

Ah the 7pm project. They should really keep out of politics lol, the things they were saying with the whole refugee thing.....

"But but....why can't we just let them all in"

"Because Australia hardly has the infrastructure to handle the people we already have"

"But but, you people must be so evil for not letting those refugees in"

Yeah, the wife likes it but to me its the dumb mans version of "The Panel". Still i get to play on the computer/laptop without interuption while its on tho so it cant be all that bad even if it is just mindless drivel most of the time.
There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.

If this actually happens I would be amazed.

yeah but this is the internet' date=' you have to expect the unexpected or else you'll get caught out by things you should've expected but didn't. Its exactly like knowing about the stuff you dont know about, that way you know theres stuff you dont know so when you know what you dont know you can say "ah i knew that!"[/quote']

The discipline of the Military does good things for people who have lost their way. Gives them something to do. Our government has a scheme to put the worst cases of youth offenders into the bootcamp deal. Nothing like a good arse kicking and discipline to get people on the straight and narrow. (I went to boarding school!)

Good idea I say.

I don't subscribe to that "do time in the Marines or do time in Jail" sort of ideals you see in say America. I do believe in civil service and federal service to a degree. However I don't think it should necessarily be defence force. Why not have other services ambulance, police, fire fighters, salvo army stuff like that.

Guys no way ! in my belief.. you are joining the ADF for your own purpose.. not coz someone gave you an option, i do not believe they deserve the right to defend there country or even help out ! let em do TIME or Community service.. let em whipasnip the cement median on the M1 for all i care !

we live in a great country.. and i think... that all we need to focus on is taking responsibilty for our actions rather than being pamperd for em..

I dont believe that the ADF should be the ones to fix the general public social problems

I do believe that there needs to be harsher penalties and zero tolerance stance on such social problems. Jail is not enough of a rehab program for such people.

But then again some do respond well to a disciplined regime, but when you think about it even though the army breaks you there is a sense of acomplishment and comarade you find being in the army. And men like to be proud and feel like they are useful and not be told they are nothing or worthless, and a way to deal with frustrations is usually best for men to be in someway aggressive, like sport or something similar

I think that prevention is the way, not rehabilitation.

Why pay to fix a problem that wouldn't even be there if you could prevent it in the first place.

Exactly we need a zero tolerance and harsher penalties

Rehab is for those who do not respond to zero tolerance

guess what the tards are talking about right now . . . gonna put my headphones on.

you know Vis, that is not a bad idea. the drunk driver who causes a car crash being made to ride round in an ambulance or fire truck will get to see (not through the beer goggles) first hand the effects of what ppl like them do.

I've always thought offenders should be made to clean up public toilets, hospital bed pans etc Essentially the nastiest stuff that has to be done, make them do it. A long stint of doing that would be more of a punishment than giving them a jail cell with a tv, and other comforts!

I also like the idea of a bootcamp style approach for young offenders. Put them through the same kind of drills, training and so on. Mentally break them down and build them back up with a respect for authority etc. Maybe later on give them the option of joining the defense force, that way they have a chance of doing something once they come out the other end.

Amen to that brother, i myself have had such a feeling of accomplishment and Pride just getting through the 8 stage enlistment process (yes i was 3R'd Dentally) but atleast i was offered the position over others.. and now thinking of going to KL to get em fixed for real cheap..... i wouldnt like to be fighting/workin with a crim... he aint there for the right reasons let a lone his own, would he just the take the barn if a men fell in front of him ... or would he do everything in his power to save a mate coz he preped to die for his country... not coz he got caught with a loaf of bread...

you guys do relise they arnt talking about sending crims into the army... it was about a 18 month national duty, so as soon as they turn 18 they would head off to basic, however would NOT be deployed oiut of australia and insted would be doing things like helping with the fires, floods, first aid and help around australia.

personaly i think its a great idea. but will never happen cus every1 will b*tch and moan about peace and trying to turn this into a military country and so on so forth. so many people see the military as this big bad thing and dont even stop to think the amount of good it can do for a person...

Well I've always thought everybody should have to do some kind of national service for 6 months or so, but not necessarily army. Working with charity and aid organisations, doing paramedic training, anything like that would not only increase people's pride in their own abilities and in their country, but also do a lot of good in the world.

Yeah I was surprised to find out that very few people were aware that a very large number of Army personnel were deployed to help with the huge bushfires we had earlier this year. People were all like "oh I though it was only firemen". The ADF provides invaluable disaster relief and humanitarian aid all over the place but they never seem to get any credit for that. You only hear about them when they do something bad.

Fail media.

When i went to the Res night at Irwin Barracks in Perth here, they said that a contingent from the 13th Brig went over to help out.

When over in Thailand a few years back now, we went to a zoo over there and the Thai Army was building the extensions to the zoo. Often wondered why they dont do things like that over here on occassion for practice for the Engineers etc . . . of course i know why but thought at the time it would be a great idea.

The engineers do a lot of that kind of stuff in the rural communities up north I think in Darwin and Queensland. Though I would hazard a guess and say that many of the engineers are currently deployed as part of the reconstruction task force in Afghanistan ATM helping rebuild the infrastructure and teaching the local population critical trade skills.

thread drift - do not confuse the terms: asylum seeker and refugee.

http://www.mmha.org.au/mmha-products/projects/no-more-mualagh/english/glossary-of-terms

Asylum Seeker: Asylum seekers are people who have applied for protection and are awaiting a determination of their status. Not all asylum seekers will be determined to be refugees.

Refugee: A refugee is legally defined as: Any person who owing to a well founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his/her nationality and is unable, or owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself/herself of the protection of that country.
