ok.. SO this arvo i got a new video card, just a reallty basic Geforce 6200 258mb AGP thing small upgrade from what i had and I plugged it in and it worked for the first few minutes, but when i hit F1 to save the hardware changes i noticed that my keyboard wasnt plugged in..so i plugged it in and reset my PC and behold! my monitor stayed black on standby..

so a bit frustrated I plugged in my old card..

same problem then i tried unplugging the old one and tried for the inbuilt motherboard port.. and still nothing!!

 

What did i break?

open up your box and make sure

 

• Graphics card is seated properly
  
• ALL power cables are plugged in correctly (pull them out and replace them)
  
• Make sure all other plugs are plugged in
  
• Make sure all plugs, monitor-computer ect are plugged in properly
  

 

your issue sounds like mine when I first put my computer together, the CPU power cord was loose so the computer was starting up screen stayed black and couldnt for the life of me figure it out, checked and pulled all plugs out and put them back in a bam good to go.

Nah didn't help shotgun

doubt it could be bios related but if the above doesn't work you could try resetting your bios (either via the jumpers, or removing the battery for 15 minutes)

Making any beeps when you start it up?

unplug you keyboard and see if it works? i dont see how the keyboard did something... what settings did you change?

There was only the initial beep when i first turned it on (detecting hardware changes are whatever it is) and asked me to press f1 to continue.. I'll trying unplugging everything but the monitor though

Think i may just try the battery like noddy said

take out the graphics card and see if it works running of mobo graphics

Yeah i tried that straight away... thats when i started getting really concerned

hrmmm... lets just hope you didnt fry anything, there was no funny smells or anything when you started up the computer or opened the box..

 

Try re-seating the CPU, ram, addition cars eg Sound card and Gfx Card...

None of the usual not seated beeps, and i can tell that windows is booting up because its doing the "hold power in for 6 seconds" thing..

Im stretched for Ideas now, 15 mins with the battery out I guess is something you can try... Ill do a search and try to think up some other ideas

If you heard a single beep, then the computer posted, and the CPU is ok.

Often when computer users install hardware in order to upgrade their own computers they run into problems. If you have just performed an upgrade and then get a black screen, the answer is obvious. Some hardware components may not be compatible with the others in your system. And of course there is always the risk of static electricity damaging your components when you are not an experienced computer repair person.

would mucking around with the lid first fix the static problem though?

I would assume so, static is a big problem but NORMALLY it is hard to actually discharge onto the specific computer parts...

 

Have you got a windows CD by chance

I have an "aquired" windows CD..

put it in the drive and start up your computer, get it to boot from the disc as windows may have one of the 7 required elements to operate corrupt. also try start up in safe mode, hit f2 as you start up your computer

May be difficult because i cant see the screen.. I'll give it a try though

yeah nothing.. and i just noticed that the lights on my keyboard arn't lighting up..

I think my MB died

not good... im stretched for ideas now

I'll try filling it with expanding foam..

any luck? I assume not... try the monitor on a different computer, then try a different monitor with your box
