Hey chaps, I'm planning to head to Brisbane for a month-long holiday at the end of the year, but I understand you have some pretty harsh rules regarding firearms and the like. I'd like to bring my Speargun over for some fishing. Aside from the usual airline safety precautions, is this legal?

Also, is it legal bring a Paintball gun over? I have a NZ firearms licence and Auzzie citizenship if it makes any difference (though from my limited research I think this won't be possible). I'll likely be staying in a backpackers hostel, but have friends in the area whose house I could secure it at.

Very unlikely that you will be able to bring either. Our spear fishing rules are very very strict as are our rules about how you may transport them. I'll do a little research for you to see if I can track down all the relevant information.

This is a quick Department of Primary Industries search.

Spearfishing, spear guns and underwater breathing apparatus

Spearfishing and spear guns are permitted in some tidal waters (for waters closed to spearfishing see Closed waters - tidal waters). A power head is not permitted other than for defence against sharks.

The use of underwater breathing apparatus other than a snorkel is not permitted when taking fish, whether by spear, spear gun, hand or any other means.

Spearfishing for barramundi is prohibited between 6 pm and 6 am.

As far as I recall spearfishing is strictly illegal in most parts of QLD. But trust me, you don't need a speargun to have a damn good time fishing up here!

call me ignorant - but aren't most waterways inhabited by this fish also home to a much larger species with sharp teeth, and the gnashing jaws? That law looks pretty sensible too me....

Not sure about the spear.

Paintball marker tho, now that's gonna be a headache, I wouldn't bother with it.

They are classed as firearms here, need to be locked up, qld is much easier then nsw I think you get away with just a metal box and some locks, in nsw you need a higher rated safe for paintball then you do for rifles or shotguns.

I highly doubt its worth the effort. Easiest thing would be hire one when you go to play.

If you really want to try it, go to billspaintball.com and do some thread searching. (lots of ppl ask about it and everyone always says don't bother / not worth the trouble lol)

Have been searching & calling around, lt looks like using it is fine, but storage is the problem. Might just have a go at hiring one instead, cheers.
