As some of you know I'm a little keen on Combatsims at the moment so I was just curious to see what you all think about a couple of things. I have ordered or am looking to pick up before the next event.

The first is the M6 Alpha Omega assault Vest I ordered this bad boy last night waiting for confirmation from the store, I assume they don't work weekends lazy bastards. It comes in at a whopping $150 but its on special for half price hopefully I've made a good call on this one, going to be too late soon to knock back the purchase though.

Anyway what I'm really looking for some feed back on is some decent gloves, knee & elbow pads and tactical googles.

The gloves I think I will probably just either put some real effort into finding my cheapo FOX biking gloves that are kicking around my house or go pick up some more when I'm out next. Can't really see the point in putting to much cash into them since I will not use them that often. However I am open to suggestions just remember one thing under $50 please otherwise its just not going to happen.

As for the knee & elbow pads I have found some decent looking ones called Multi Purpose Ultra Force Elbow & Knee Pads. I'm curious if anyone has used them before? Also has anyone brought anything from Camoshop.com.au before? How are they for price?

Finally the tactical goggles. Well I have yet to find these bastard things for a reasonable price the best I have seen are these Black Tactical Ballistic Goggles and they don't exactly endear themselves to my heart.

I have also found these Military Style Goggles but they aren't anything special either.

http://www.wellingtonsurplus.com.au/images/l/GO2151.jpg

Also these ZERO-VISION MILITARY STYLE GOOGLES. I don't mind them and at least they come with 3 different lens.

Finally there are these ones INFANTRY STYLE GOGGLES. Stupid names I know anyway I don't mind them would not be getting the digital cam frames though.

I'm thinking I might have a look around my Brisbane for some decent scratch resistant snowboarding or dirt biking goggles. Any one have any ideas once again looking for something under $50. Also I think I will feel a little better if I get to try them on first since I have never found goggles or sunnys to be one size fits all.

At this point I have spent about $300 dollars to get myself to the point where I am now, counting the assault vest and my Huss Aus Cams. Which no one should ever buy cause they are just poorly designed. However they will do for now and I can't keep forking out money.

Anyway lets see what you all have to say and keep it on topic.

If your after some good goggles i suggest the Arena goggles i got myself the "MOZAMBIK" model before deployment best thing i ever bought. Knee and elbow pads those ones you found look fine, you really dont need to be picky about them as long as the got good padding and are not cheap plastic. As for gloves i suggest these "Plat A Tac Tactical Duty Gloves MkII (AUSCAM)" again yet another great buy i made.

I will try and get a nice list of good priced products that i would recommend for you soon

Gloves - I grabbed a pair of carpeter's gloves from Bunnings - Thumb, forefinger and middle finger are fingerless, so i can still do weapons drills, but it gives some decent protection to my hands. $15.

Kneepads - try and find something OTHER than pads with velcro straps - we call them 'sliders' in the Army cause thats exactly what they do - slide down around your ankles. Find something that attaches to your pants. Don;t pay any more than like $25.

Goggles - did you see anyone esle wearing goggles? Don't be a girl :p .

Saw plenty of fella's wearing sunny's and you weren't the bloody poor bastard getting dragged though every lantana thicket ONI could find. :p Actually Clown copped a fly in the eye while we were walking over the dam wall I was really surprised consider the bush bashing we were doing. Anyway I'm not putting my bloody expensive sunglasses on the line considering they are already scratched from my last 4x4 excursion to land cruiser park.

Just out of curiosity, what headwear will you have?

I've just got a Huss Auscam bush hat that I will knock some velco tabs onto when I have a second so I don't have to wear one of those silly head bands again. It did me well last time and I find them very comfortable and they have a reasonable amount of protection from the elements and misc things that wish to see the inside of my shirt.

I like the vest, you will find out very soon that this eventually becomes a expensive sport but its well worth it and your preferences change alot when it comes to gear

I bought a pair of gloves from Bunnings, they fit well and protect my hands great, they came in Tan so they match my Truspec multicam really well.

Chopper pointed me in the right direction for knee pads from Bunnings which cost about $5 and they slip into the in-built knee pad pocket for my multicams and work really well.

If you really want to use glasses and want something cheap but works well I reccomend these babies A few guys had them at Storm and they worked wonders, the yellow lenses are good for low light, like afternoons it sharpens and lights up the area quite well.

Im looking to get a MICH Helmet and a few pouches for my next purchase, and another vest/plate carrier. One thing I dont understand I could be having an eye on something for a couple of months and then as soon as I buy it and use it I want to get something else.

Have fun Vissy

Vest: I'd probably go for something a bit lighter but it's probably a good starting point and you can always sell it and get something else later. No matter what you get to start with, you'll probably change your mind later as you figure out what works for you.

Gloves: I have the kitbag TAG gloves - they do a good job. Platatac have a lot of good options. More discussion here.

Kneepads: I have some cheapy ebaybanned jobs but I think both kitbag and platatac had a few which looked OK.

Goggles: I'd just go for cheap sunnies. Can't comment on specific models of tac goggles.

I really want to find a nice chest rig for both milsims and hunting when I get the chance. However I don't know where to get some good cams from, anybody got an idea of where to buy them?

What sort of cam pattern you after Chief?

  • Author

Like I mentioned earlier Chief I brought a par of HUSS Auscams just from the City Camping & Disposals. I would suggest you steer well clear of them if possible.

More so the pants then anything as like I said they have a poor pocket design. Essentially the large cargo pockets a placed around knee height but instead of off to the side of you leg they are placed perfectly to the front. This of course means that anything you put there is going to hamper your movement and is a terrible place for a med box since if your like me you will accidentally tap it fairly often.

The hats and tops are reasonably fine just don't expect them to breathe that well or to have any real wicking property's. When I finished my game on Saturday I was quite wet from sweat for the most part and had put around 3ltrs of water into me. That is about where my knowledge stops I can throw you a few links but I really would suggest you take the time to be 110% sure of the sizes you are ordering. Although most of the military enthusiast gear seems to be graded into about 5 size category's for example say medium Auscams might be from waist size 30 to 35 with user adjustable buttons and what not to make them fit that entire range of sizes.

BTW here is the yellowpages map of Disposal Stores around Brisbane might be some help to you if you don't know where your closest real life outlet is.

Good luck mate and I hope you don't fall for any newbie traps like I did. ;)

Be aware of where the buttons on the trousers are - even genuine army issues.

I got bruises around my hip bones because the buttons that were needed to tighten my trousers kept brushing up against them caused by the weight/compression of my webbing + pack.

As smoov suggested, it depends on what pattern you want.

If you want to check out any local stores in general, Uptons in Browns Plains is one of the better ones I've come across. Brisbane Disposals at Kippa Ring & the camping quartermaster in enoggera seem to have a lot of stuff also. (though I haven't visited either)

Took one of the boys advice from the thread you mentioned Seg and grabbed a pair of the Ironclad Framing Gloves from Bunnings. Only about $30 dollar and nice and comfortable with 3 free fingers on each hand so I should not need to take them on and off all the time. Also grabbed a cheap Slazenger watch for when I'm out in the field since its to much hassle going after my phone all the time. ;)

Well what pattern do you guys recommend? I'm not exactly very knowledgeable about military camouflage types :p

It's amazing how many pairs of trousers and shirts are 'shiny' out of the bag.

I've even seen ones that make squeaky noises when you rub them together :D

sigh every man has his vice i guess :p now where did i put that gerbil?

What brands of AUSCAM are out there?

I usually go to the local "Mitchells" Camping store and buy the "Commando" brand of cams the only challenge with that brand is sizing and camo availability.

The only ones they get in anything bigger then XXL is AUSCAM or Black when all i really want is to try out the are woodland digi marine print.
