I'm looking to put a stereo in my new car.

Anyone know some good models that won't cost more than the car did?

Just grab something like this.

Car CD tuner with MP3/WMA playback

DEH-1150MPG

RRP $199

http://www.pioneer.com.au/~/media/Images/Product%20Images/Car%20Entertainment/cdDvdPlayers/DEH_1150MPG.ashx?bc=white&mw=300

FEATURES: MP3, WMA or WAV music file playback, front Auxiliary input and detachable face The DEH1150MPG allows you to hook up your portable music devices, such as an iPod ®, with ease using the front auxiliary input. While it will also play regular CDs or your own compilations of MP3, WMA, or WAV files. To ensure superior sounding audio the DEH1150MPG uses Bimetric Equalizer (BMX) technology which compensates for any loss in high frequency sound levels caused by file compression, such as MP3 files. Security is enhanced by a detachable face and carry case.

I've had 3 of these over the last few years. Not necessarily this model but this is the current bottom of the range model I have had both of the previous ones released before this. That aside they are reasonably priced have WMA & MP3 play back so you can burn a cd off your PC that will mean you don't need to keep 20 or 30 expensive legitimate cd's in your car to get stolen. Finally as most of these do the front panel can be easily removed if your parking your car in a shady area and don't want to temp thief's any more than a cheap car already does. No offence intended but I'm assuming the car you got for under $1500 is a older make/model without many security features.

Right then ..... not quite as good as the car I first put one of these into. A 1976 LX Torana that if you had any brains and knew even a little bit about you could break into with a ice cream stick and you didn't even need keys to start the car. So yeah its the right sort of device for that sort of application.

And we learn our lesson when in 12 months the system is only worth $4k. :(

Steer clear of clarion, they are overpriced and primitive. The amount of features when compared to pioneer etc is dismal.
