I'm looking at a car, apparently the guy brought it for his daughter and she ran it with the oil light on and the engine "blew." His words.

Car is fine everywhere else.

If I was to go take a look at it what would I be looking for?

I imagine the engine would be all seized up ect, how hard would it be to fix (or how expensive) or would it need a new engine?

this is one for B man!

but yeah I would say the engine would have run hot due to the absence of lubrication from the oil and you should look for piston damage, soooo thats about as far as ill go because Ill be taking a stab in the dark

Love you long time gunner <3

I like to wait till im nearly done, then pull out and yell "COVERING FIRE!!!"

Ahhh. Im so glad I have a GF and she doesnt read these forums...

Depends what kind of engine it is..re the cost.

No oil = seized most likely, but to check ,put a socket on a long bar onto the pulley at the end of the crankshaft (the big one @ the bottom as a rule ) and see if it'll turn.

Its far cheaper to buy a second hand engine than to get one reconditioned, but if its only the bottom end (ie the rings/pistons/crankshaft) you can often get hold of a reconed "short block" and use the heads and etc off the old one.

Buying a 2nd hand engine with out a warranty is generally a BAD IDEA btw..;).

The big question is....where did the oil go in the first place, did it leak out or was it burning the oil because the rings were shot ..?.

If the car is in good condition I would either get a reconditioned (with a warranty !!!!!!!!) engine,or take your chances with a second hand one from a wreckers...but beware of dodgy ferkas in the wrecking business...as there are many.

What kinda Ve Hic Cal is it ?.

after its broken once it will never be as good.

your better off going and getting something that hasent had an issue such as an engine 'blewing up'

if his daughter drove it I would not bother, i know how women treat cars... backing over a rock as long as the bits you see are alright it doesn't matter even if under the bumper has a hole in it. I would inspect it and inspect it hard, if a car has problems it has problems for ever, cheaper and better option to spend a bit more and get a working car then get something that appears alright for the moment (when you replace the motor) only to find out it will cost you much $$$$ to replace other components

Take the engine out and replace with, say, Fiat Alison B4 engine?

Failing that, put a 5.4L F350 engine in it.

[WC]Xavo|xXx:

The oil light is for low oil pressure. means the engine has run with low oil pressure for a bit so is shot and would need a full rebuild , main bearings pistons cylinder head rebuild etc . blah to that.

price a replacement engine fitted from a jap importer or reputable wrecker first before you decide.

car plus engine fitted may be less than different car. just a thought.

most exjap engines are low mileage and in ok condition .

usually less ks than the car they are going into so its an option.

if the car is really cheap that is.

:hi:

Yeah, expect to have to completley replace the engine. Stick your finger inside - it's probably oil mixed up with ground-up metal in there.
what make/model/year is the car btw? and how much is cheap?

92 honda prelude, starting at $200 on an auction.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/ee/US_Army_E-2.svg/50px-US_Army_E-2.svg.png

So what you do is buy that and another DAMAGED prelude, preferably hit up the arse...and swap the engines... :)

(rear damage means the engine will have survived intact...)

Easy pesy....I used to do that a couple of times a week.

( "Easy " if you know how...which I do ;))

Does it have to be auto-auto or can it be auto to manual?

best to stick with the same ,otherwise you will have to change the bell housing, tranny lines, radiator (for the transmission cooler), tail shaft, the console (for the shifter)...engine computer.....etc..so yar..if its auto stick with auto or vice versa.

try googling 'honda half cuts' in NZ..quick search in aus and found prices around $1800 for a H22A (assuming the proposed car is that engine type)..... not sure what cars go for over there - but considering you're prolly looking at the same again for it to be installed... you might be better off ringing around some mechanics and ask how much to completely rebuild the engine that's in it.......or finding a car which doesn't require a rebuild.....

Dont spend money on fixing that one, you get buy a second hand one. Even reconditioned ones are pretty cheap, search ebay. but the engines are the cheap parts, if susp, brakes, bushes, are bad, you could easily spend thousands replacing, and if she drove without oil, you can assume she was probablly in a few dings, so make sure the paint job matches the age of vehicle, cause if looks recent, it probablly covers something else such as a major accident (can actually get a VIP check with MVR which will tell you if the car has been in a major accident costs $21 in victoria).

Best bet is...Buy a Bedford Van, work yourself to death rebuilding every single thing on it, and die early of stress and heartache...LIKE ME!!!!!!!!!!
