Are you reusing any parts from your current system (monitor, keyboard, soundcard, headset, mouse, speakers)?

So what'll you be using this half worthy computer for?

Photoshop, word processing (lol - you don't need a new computer for that silly :p), 3dsmax (I max'd on a <$1000 computer for about a year until I could gather enough courage to ask the boss for a better one), CAD?

On the topic of shiny auscam...

the sound they made while bush walking made it seem like I was doing mean things to little furry animals inside my pants :p

Get yourself a copy of PC Powerplay.

They always have a good budget PC example in there I noticed.

A lot of the research for my recent purchase was from that and Atomic. I found it helpful.

Another option is those buy and sell papers.

I saw entire setups for a really good price in there which where still recent systems. I would imagine that if they still have their receipts you may even catch a bit of the warranty.

Ok well if you're trying to keep it around $1k, then you're going to have to prioritize:

- 3dsMax

or

- Gaming graphics

3dsmax will primarily be CPU bound when rendering, and I can only assume you do a fair amount. To give you an example, on a 3ghz dual versus a 3ghz, the time difference to render Joan of Ark was about 45% quicker on my brothers computers (took just over half the time).

Tom's Hardware - Benchmark 3D Studio Max 9

Whereas if you'd like eye candy and don't mind rendering overnight or having it take about twice as long, you can go for the low(er)-cost dual core and spend it up on the graphics card. However this is more a short term fix as games like ARMA are heavily CPU bound, and this will probably the case with more and more games to come. That being said, having a great CPU without a graphics card to boot is pointless, as your GPU won't be able to churn out the frames anyway.

So therein lies the low-cost dilemma, especially since you're using it for multipurpose use. I would say for 3dsmax you'd want a quad minimum, even if you go the AMD route for cost savings. Graphics wise, will you play more graphically demanding games or will you be sticking to PR? If it'll just be PR in essence (with the odd GTA4 or whatever) then a HD4850 will suffice, however these days the 4890 or GTX275 are really the 'sweet spots' in price for your performance as far as I know.

So if you can come back with a holistic view of what's more important to you, we can look at speccing something up to suit your needs, rather than just the generic $1000 box.

I suspect stuff like 3DSmax will move to CUDA-enabled GPU's in the near future. You could do fine with an E8400 (Core 2 Duo 3ghz, *everyone* uses the E8400 nowadays) and a middle-of-the road GPU (GTX 250 - GTX 285).

Well how 3ds max runs atm on my lappy is fine thats not a prob, so i would be leaning towards graphics then cpu.

So, your time isn't worth spending money on?

Go a triple core AMD and a 4850 to 4870, depending on how much you want to save. 4850 runs PR at all high, just fine. Sure, it's not 100fps all the time, but it doesn't get laggy.

If your budget conscious in a nutshell - dual core for gaming, quad core for video editing etc.

If you're not budget conscious then get a quad but I would wait till they come down in price. No point buying it if you don't need it.

You can go something like AM2+ dual core w/AM3 /DD2 board FOR $250-300 and a Phenom dual core 7850 AM2+ for around $150, or an X3 for a little more, so you can always upgrade in a year or so if you want... AM2+/AM3 are compatible.
