As per the title I'm looking for a good book about The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire that details the battles, the rise and fall of Caesars and generally a reasonable level of detail about the entire time line. Without going over the top and buying a series of small encyclopaedias. Does anyone know of any good books like that or about similar interesting topics?

Thanks in advance guys. :hi:

Marcus Aurelius' "Meditations" is one of the finest classics you will ever

read and was written by the great man, at the time the most powerful

man in the Western world. It is full of great insight, humility and

philosophical tact. 5 Roman Emperors out of 5 for an edifying

classic.

Yeah I saw the wiki mate I was looking for something written by someone with a little more insight then your average web users. :p

EDIT: I take that back thought it was a wiki about the rise and fall not a wiki about a book.

I'm pretty sure there was a real old book called something like "Fall of the Roman Empire" or something like it... it was made in like 4-6 volumes... not to sure can't really remember but I got it of that game Empire: Total War where they give you facts... so the book was probably published like in the late 1770's

EDIT....

That link that sandy posted is the book volumes I was talking about

Empire: Total War tell the truth?

I'll loan you my ancient history teacher for a week...

He SERIOUSLY knows to much for his own bloody good...

he's like 3 books in 1 chubby old man...

And if you wanted a good book with everything in it, it would be about 1000000 pages long... there's a lot of stuff to cover.. It would be best to find a book on the aspects of the rise and fall that your interested in...

Author - Morgan Llywelyn

Title - Druids

Review-

http://shelfandstuff.blogspot.com/2008/05/druids-by-morgan-llywelyn.html

In brief

Long before Arthur united the tribes of Britain against the Saxons and Boudica went against the Romans, there was another young warrior king who united his people to fend off invaders. Vercingetorix was the leader of a tribe in Gaul (current day France, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands and the part of Germany west of the Rine) around 52 BC. Facing the encroachment of Rome – and Julius Caesar- into Gaul, he puts together a precarious alliance of various tribes in an attempt to defend their land, their homes and their families. Although he is not as well known as Arthur or Boudica, his story is one of intrigue, betrayal and sacrifice and is brought to life in the hands of Morgan Llwelyn’s Druids.

Personal Thoughts-

Brilliant read and have read the book three times over the last 10 years.

Descriptive narrative that tells the thought processes behind an encrouching society.

Isn't a book that is Ancient Rome battle based but the physcology of a man put into the position knowing that a war machine is on it's way and that decisions made are decisions that will see either the longetivity of his culture or it been swallowed up by the overwhelming presence of the Roman Empire.

Where to get it?

$7.99 who can complain?
