We first heard about Battlefield Heroes and its mixture of Team Fortress 2-style graphics and casual gameplay almost a year and a half ago. Today, as Shacknews reports, members of the public can now play the game free of charge—at least to begin with.

To try the casual shooter, simply head over to the Battlefield Heroes website with either Firefox or Internet Explorer, and hit the big, round "play now!" button. After installing the required Firefox add-on or IE ActiveX control, the game installer will open, download the game, and set everything up for you.

You'll need to pop back into your browser to create a character, but the game itself runs as a full-blooded Windows application with its own Program Files directory. DICE's approach is therefore a bit different from the one id took with Quake Live, which runs within the browser through a custom plug-in. That said, Battlefield Heroes look and feels considerably more cartoony and dumbed-down. (Quake Live, by contrast, is pretty much a direct port of the original Quake 3: Arena.)

Battlefield Heroes' handful of maps are freely playable through the game's built-in match-making system. As Shacknews points out, however, you'll have to shell out real money if you want bonuses, new weapons, special items, and other "premium" content—that's how DICE plans to cash in.

unfortunately its subject to 'battlefield heroes syndrome'

a disease where those who have money to buy gear seemingly win every round.

I can't stand playing in third person...

It's a 400MB~ download

BUT it has two BIG FAILS by EA/DICE

1. No team balance (It can become 3 vs 8 if one side doesn't have enough players)

2. No class balance (A side can have 8 Commandos, which pretty much guarantees that side loses)

Other then that its pretty fun and the only "real" advantage paying players have over free is they can buy an "XP BOOSTER" which allows them to earn more "Hero Points" for a certain amount of time.

Hero Points are used to give/upgrade player abilities, each class has 6 abilities they can learn and upgrade

Also new weapons are only "rented" (either for 1 week or 1 month) for xxx "VP" points (which are earned by playing/completing the mission...BF2 badge like)

You can also use VP points to rent SOME new clothes items, most have to be bought though :(. You'd have to be a fool though since most cost 560 BF points and the real dollar cost of BF points are a ****ing joke :)

I liked the song.

Here is a list of particularly awesome things:

dogs

sniping

very spicy chilli

cat claws on people (but still cool on cats)

yeah i was beta testing it like all the other people that got beta keys, its good when you know what your doing plus, its not that bad of a game, yes you can have unfair teams, but when gunner you have special abilitys to take out the commandos. all in all its an ok game

rating 7/10 stars

you can get outfits permanently now and thats not to bad

Its a awful lot like Maple Story in regards to the XP card, the clothes and weapons hell all it needs is pets to pick up items for you and they are a clone.
