What does it mean when you turn on your pc, and only the case lights turn on then it just beeps at you? What is broken lol

something has come loose, pull apart your machine, dust it off, pull out plugs and put them back in, check all connections. Try again

Yea as above - 1st rule is check all connections.

Then maybe check PSU or Harddrive.

also check to make sure the ram is seated properly

There are beep codes. Google something along those lines and the type of beep will tell you what the problem is.

Something like this:

 

1 short beep

Normal POST - system is ok

2 short beeps POST Error - error code shown on screen

No beep Power supply or system board problem

Continuous beep Power supply, system board, or keyboard problem

Repeating short beeps Power supply or system board problem

1 long, 1 short beep System board problem

1 long, 2 short beeps Display adapter problem (MDA, CGA)

1 long, 3 short beeps Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA)

3 long beeps 3270 keyboard card

yep done all that. The case fans and lights are connected to the psu directly. They turn on. The cpu fan doesnt and neither do the hardrives. It doesnt boot at all not even to bios.

How much do you know about the internals of your computer??

if you have 2 sticks of ram one or both might be fubar.

 

remove one and try. if no joy swap them over.

 

dead ram will make your computer not start right at the start of boot up.

So what beep code does it give you (as per SOP's guidance)?

I know more then average person but not by much, I built the comp, bought the individual parts etc. I am checking the ram now

ok i have switched the ram. First switch nothing, no beeps at all. Then when i tested my second stick i got 1 long a 2 short beeps

i reckon the first stick if fubared, make sure your monitor is plugged in and nothing is loose in/on the case or on the monitor its self.

hey bahlye, i dont think its the psu, think it is the video card. What type of psu is it? would it run a 4870 1gb?

pull the card and reseat it on the motherboard. most common issue is card becomes a little dislodged over time. if that doesnt work try it in another puter. if that doesnt work take it back to shop.

Its only a generic 350 watt raz,but if you chuck it into your pc and it powers up...we have a win.

If it doesn't ...well you know its not the psu..

I have a spare (well 3 actually) graphics card you could chuck in if you'd like to isolate the exact problem, before having to deal with warranty etc. The problem might well be your motherboard

One of your capacitors (on the motherboard) might have karked it, best narrow it down if you have a warranty on whatever is busted though.

warranty is long over. I just bought a ati radeon 4870 1gb and 600w psu, plus 4gb of kingston ram. Should be here friday or Monday. God i hope its just gfx card and i dont have to buy a new mobo. im getting the eve shakes.....lol

New video card and psu arrived 30m mins ago. All is installed and working great. Stupud xp 32bit only detects 3.5gb of my new ram
