Been thinking about getting a dog recently. I'm looking for a big dog, something that doesn't bark to much or go insane and destroy everything. Something easy to train and friendly.

(Looking for general breed advice, I know every dog is different but some breeds are "better" than others.)

Any tips/advice/comments?

Go to the pound and look for big paws on a puppy.

Big tip would be to enroll any dog you get into a good obedience course as soon as they are old enough. Makes all the difference! Then I would recommend a staffy but I am biased lol.:victory:

Theres this breed something like afghan or something, its a big dog used as a shepherd for living with sheep or goats or something, its big gentle very very protective of its owner ir; if you have a friend over it will sit between you and if the stranger moves it will relocate to be in between you all the time, they dont bark much/if at all but have a very deep growl and bark when they do.

I have a border collie/german shepherd, shes going on 9 now, but a great dog and has lived a terrific life.

They need alot of training but they can be absolutely terrific, they can learn a variety of tricks if you teach them early and keep practicing it.

Problem is, whenever the doorbell or anything goes off she'll either bark or growl, VERY protective.

Shes medium-sized so she isn't too much trouble, but a border collie tends to be much more smart (the ones with the long hair on the stomach and legs)

In the range of small-medium i would go no further than a scottish terrier, very adaptable, they look great, are quiet, and really friendly. Overall they are a more 'im pretty awesome' kind of doggy. They're faithful, stout and stubborn however.

do you live in a unit or a house?

If you decide to go small/medium

Italian Greyhound. Best dogs ever. fun, playful and just do plain stupid things all the time, so very entertaining.

Also, if you get a Border Collie, make sure you are prepared to go on long walks/be very active.

We have a border collie on our farm and she will run behind the truck, the tractor, chase things when we are fencing, chase the dozer, chase the other cattle dog we have, then run home faster than the truck all in a few hours.

Then she is probably off chasing peacocks or the chooks or some cattle in the yards when we're having lunch.

Slav,

You can not go past a Weimaraner, short haired. That is if you would like another loyal family member. Need training as any old dog but is very intelligent and loves outdoors, running swimming, what ever you fancy. Great with the kids and has a soft mouth, These dogs are gun dogs bred for the retrieval of game meat, and therefore good with kids.

Mongrel mix from the pound. Either the best or worst dog you will ever own (well, as long as you pick the right one).

No pedigree health problems either, usually.

You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. Ever. About anything.

German shepherds are great - BUT have hip problems and are prone to cancer - life expectancy 10 yrs..maybe a little more - I've had 3 of em...best dog...loyal, obedient (if trained young..otherwise they whine alot) prob is they just die young and have bad medical probs.

Roddy's - Same as above

Doberman - Cancer, kidneys and hips

There the only dogs I have personal experience with and am certain about the issues. I hate to say it as i've never had one but...Maybe get a x breed that has these issues bred out of them, that way you get the good dog, without the dramas..if so...run with something/german shephard, just cant go past a shephard thats well trained and well looked after, theyre friendly, intelligent and just a kick arse kinda dog

I have a German Shepherd X, 9 years, looks like a puppy, no hip problems (square rear, as opposed to sloping). Looks like a GS, acts like a GS, no issues. Too intelligent for own good, only dog to ever escape the local dog kennel (whom train police dogs) and break back in.

I also have a Greyhound X, doesn't look like a greyhound except for long legs and incredible speed. 10 years old, looks young, very active, no health problems except a penchant for small animals.

Get a Norwegian forest cat, they are as big as dogs. Personally I hate cats but for this cat I would make an exception .

They are basically dogs but are extremely affectionate. They are super intelligent and you will never have to worry about your cat getting run over because people with crap themselves when they see it thinking its some form of panther
