Scrim needs new boots.

My old GP's are wearing out and although they've served me well, I think it's about time I move on.

Before I make my choice though, would paintballs stain nubuck boots like the Terras/Altamas/etc? (while I'm at it, do you guys have any sub $200 boot recommendations?)

I'd hate to turn up to an exercise with pink blotches all over my newly found loves.

Basically, I'll be wearing the boots off to duke of ed hikes, paintball/laser skirmish and maybe the odd cadet camp when I'm called out (not sure what the current standing orders of dress are at the moment but I'll think about that later).

If God could wear boots, he'd wear current-gen Terra's.

Paintball could possibly stain them, but just wash those puppies with some water and the paint should come out.

Are you really likely to get shot in the foot anyway?

I've also got a pair of Magnum Spider Elites, which I used to wear for MilSims, but I prefer my issued Terra's now.

You can pick up Terra's for like $100 bucks too, wheras the Spiders are like $250.

Couple of my mates swear by Bates-Lites too - they're USMC issue, and those boys can't be wrong.

Did they finally 'fix' the Terras now? Where's a good place to get them?

Wellington surplus has them for $90 IIRC but I highly doubt they're current generation - they've been advertised at the same price for while.

Mmmm....

Original Swat Classic 9" Tan.

I wore these on camp for 9 days through some of the toughest scrub I've seen in a while (worse then when I have to poison the lantana). Anyway, these boots kept on walking. Comfortable, warm, good fit especially around the ankles. $160 from Soldier 2 Soldier (although that shop was a bit pricey IMO)

Can't really recommend anything else, as I've never had anything else.

They 'fixed' the Terra's - I believe the issues were sizing and the water-drainage valves being put in backwards lol. Tonnie might know more about them, I haven't been in long enough to know about the older-gen ones.

$90 is about right, but just ask what Generation they are when you go to buy them. Most disposals stores will be pretty helpful. Don't order over the net, go into a store and try them on

They'll always get scuffed, but they're boots - isn't that thier job?

Its Kangaroo leather, pretty tough stuff. Mine are pretty trashed, but obviously they're issued so i don't really look after them as well as I should lol. Doesn't your cadet unit issue boots? If so, grab a pair and just scrub em down after every paintball game, or before you go out on EX.

I have some older Terras, I find them to be pretty good. I have played plenty of paintball in them and they don't get colored as much as you might think. I don't even clean them and you bearly see where paint has been, it just sort of goes away. I guess it slowly builds up in the leather and looks fairly even or something.

The cadet unit issues boots but as far as I know, the whole of NSW's units are under stocked in everything.

Was at the regional conference last year and was told HQ had a warehouse full of surplus from ARA but didn't have the paperwork for it - they lost it apparently.

So I guess it's more of me feeling guilty taking the unit's supplies when I know the incoming recruits will need them (and use them) more frequently than me.

Might wanna check what that card gets you access to

It's a card nevertheless!

Wellington surplus has them for $90 IIRC but I highly doubt they're current generation - they've been advertised at the same price for while.

I have tried on a few pairs of Terras and I wouldn't recommend buying them without trying them on - a few mondopoint to US or AU sizing charts ended up giving me different numbers and while I tried a few, it seemed I always needed a bigger pair which were never available. That said, I did find a pair which was /close/ to the right size and they were DAMN comfortable.

The Wellington Surplus Terras are not current gen (they confirmed this for me). I ended up buying...

Original Swat Classic 9" Tan.

...from Wellington Surplus. Beware they are not vented as per the picture, but they still drain and dry very well.

I tried on a similar SWAT black pair at a local store first to check sizing and they're pretty much on par with standard Australian sizing. Managed to tear some of the stitching from the fabric (probably on barbed wire) at Lazerstorm though :-/

Taipans are meant to be very good and Brisbane Disposals have them for a decent price.

OK now this ****s me. I would have loved a pair of these and Kitbag had them on special for $150 a few months ago but by the time I ordered them they were out of stock!

Anyway... further discussion on boots and the various brands can be found in this thread at Laserforums also.

hey well i have 2 pairs of terras and they fit my feet nice... pretty compfy... and i wear them all day everyday atm! 3 - 4 - 7km march, running, drill fine on my feet!

some people in my platoon have had blisters but they do mould to your feet pretty quickly with lots of use....

ill get another 2 issued when i march out, and head to my IET's.

i believe u can buy them from Aussie Disposal stores. but not sure if they are the same issue as wat i have... i think they are slightly different.

Mitchells Adventure were selling terras for $99, at size 12 they didnt fit me, they were too tight around the bridge area of my foot (just above the toes).

Then a mate of mine who works at SORD hooked me up with these

‘This Boot won’t Declare War on your Feet®’

Design Brief

One dread day the doctor looks into your fresh young face and says: “Miss (Son, Sir, Madam, etc) you have the knee joints of a person twice your age. We are booking you in for the operation”.

It’s the mileage. The wear and tear of pounding the ground. The leaping and the falling and the twisting.

We can’t roll back the speedo but we can gear it down a bit. Here is a boot specifically designed for the one profession which is expected to run over broken ground whilst over loaded with tools of their trade.

Features

We wanted to make the very finest combat boot possible and so we turned to Weinbrenner Shoe Co of Merrill Wisconsin. They are one of the few boot makers to have kept the capacity to make boots by the classic Goodyear Welt system.

The sewn (welted) midsole is the structural heart of a construction strong enough for speed and agility. Costs more to make, saves the wearer in durability and comfort.

•Goodyear Welt construction.

•Synthetic Shank to absorb shock and support the foot over broken ground. Provides torsion strength for ‘edging’ across slope. No steel.

•Structural midsole with cork filler. Moulds to your foot shape.

•Thick slab of high density shock absorbing foam.

•Rockered last for proper ‘strike and roll’ when moving fast.

•Foot bed. Replaceable, high quality dual foam footbed.

•Snag free non-ferrous speed lacers.

•Rough out top grain leather upper in issue khaki colour.

•Heavy duty heel and toe counters. Heel cup is sewn in place to resist pronation and maintain proper joint (ankle, knee, hip) alignment.

•Ventilating, quick drying. Free-2-Air® lining.

•Vibram Sierra Outsole. Highly durable and heat resistant. Mountaineering grade grip.

Defence Endorsed

Approved for Army wear by CDF.

Sizes

U.S. sizes 4½ - 12 in half sizes. 13, 14, 15 and 16. Medium and Wide.

Made on the classic CrossFire last to fit wide local feet. Plenty of room for orthotics.

Fitting

We have good experience of fitting by mail. Pull the foam footbed out of your favourite pair of runners. Trace it. Note sizing as it is labelled in the shoe (typically US, UK, Euro). Post to us with your phone number. We’ll call back and finalise fitting.

Colour Khaki (matched to ADF issue boot)

Weight (size 9) 1.6kg pr

Price $288 per pair

Care and Maintenance

•Try not to kick off one boot with the other. It may damage the heel counter and shorten service life.

•Between missions, remove the foam footbed and allow the boot interior to breathe.

•Wash off heavy mud or clay before drying.

•Restore softness to upper with silicone treatment.

•No Dubbin.

•Dry boots overnight by stuffing with crumpled newspaper.

•Don’t dry boots near fire.
