Yeah, so i am thinking of joining the reserves,

being thinking about it for a while now,

just wondering what those of you that have been/are in the ADF what is the best way to go about it, how it works etc.

the Army website is pretty piss poor on the explanation of things.

what do i expect (besides the obvious it's not going to be a walk in the park, they wont be nice to you)

and whats the best thing to join?

Mr Zardy,

Yes, the Army website is pretty piss poor. Get used to it :p

Basically, you go through the same selection process as the Regulars. You will have a YOU session, consisting of an aptitude test (pretty much to make sure you can spell your name correctly), a Med interview and a buttload of waiting around.

The next step is another session, with a Psych Eval, a full physical (including cradling of nutsack) and an interview with a Defence recruiter, usually a higher-ranking NCO.

If you get through both of those, you do a PFA fitness test, and then you're in.

Once you get to your unit, you will do different stuff, depending on which Corps you choose.

Tonight was a pretty typical Infantry night for us 4PL noobies who haven't been to ARTC yet:

Admin/Roll Call

PT for 1 hr

Weapons Training - F88 Austeyer 1 hr

Boozer

As you get more qualified you get to do other stuff, some other PL was playing with radios etc, or you might do a Nav refresher course.

As for your question about what to do, just take the advice I was given, and don't join a support Corps. As a Reservist, you won't do anything.

Go Infantry or Dropshorts, or even Sappers at a stretch.

I hear there's more than 2 snipers kits IRL.

People who play PR are usually the ones with military history or a military future.

No question about it PR certainly appeals to the military buffs and rightfully so since its a teamwork and realism mod. Ohh and here is my sage like advice in your Pysch Evaluation lie your arse off because the truth is bad apparently.

Zardez just call 13 19 01... they will sort you out.

Get booked into a YOU session and that is basically the first informal interview day. it consists of aptitude testing, a medical and criminal history questionnaire. also a brief informal interview with a recruiter.

basically as base has said its the same selection process as the regulars. If you want more info on your local reserve regiment(s), look them up and give them a call. they will be more then happy to answer any questions you have about part time service.

be prepared to have a long drawn out application process. it can take upto 6months and longer to get through it all, so have patience and after your YOU session if you pass, jus keep calling the 13 19 02 number... and harass the **** out of em untill they book you in for you assessment day.

Im toying with the idea of joining in a couple of years when Im in Uni....

My friend tried to join when he was 18 and he basically got rejected (they didn't like the fact he was immediately out of school, he hadn't had many jobs before etc)

Isn't there a gap year program where you can join up and essentially try it out? I remember seeing something about that but i'd already started first year!

Was considering it myself for a while, either Pilbera Reg or Sapper. Info night i went to a while back said that Pilbera Reg was one of few reserve regs that were on a 'constant war footing' as they are tasked with coastal recon (took over from SASR), as such you go/went on a more accelerated course, basically you do more patrolling/gun training and less 'marching'. From what i remember, its/was one night a week, one weekend a month, two weeks per year altho with Pilbera Reg it was a lot different as you could be out on patrols spaning a couple of weeks.

Sapper, well to blow stuff up and also learn to drive the plant equipement . . . lets face it, we all want ot play with REAL Tonka toys dont we? (o:

Was thinking about officer but my bro-inlaw went to an open night at Karakatta Baracks to speak with the reserve guys there and they said pretty much you better like paper work as that is about 90% of what you do as an officer in the reserves but those who are in and are officers will be able to confirm that or not.

There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.

When they ask you to come in for the aptitude test they will tell you not to pee because they want to do a urine test later in the day. I took that order seriously so by about 3:00PM I was busting to go. They then called me aside and said "piss into this cup" and handed me something the size of a bottle top. I asked for something bigger but they didnt have any. I did pass that test with some task management.

Also for the psych test lie your ass off. The worst thing that happened to you in your life was that you skinned your knee once when you were 8.

Oh and as a reservist you will be looked down upon by the Regs. So make them really hate you and become reservist Military Police Officer.

We talked to a sapper on AFX at Singleton:

'so what do you do most of the time as a sapper'

'fill sandbags'

We also talked to 2 snipers, they bought out the .50 and all their weapons, nfi that they had spaz-12's

Ok, 1 at a time:

Trip is right, process will be long and drawn out. Get used to it, the Army is just another Govt department.

Minimum requirement to stay active is 14 days per year.

That said, any self respecting Chocko will put in a bigger effort than that - otherwise, whats the point of joining?

Tuesday nights 1900-2200, and one full weekend a month. Big excercises about every 3 months, usually over a week or 2.

Thats not including your training, of which there are 28 days at Camp Happy, then your 2 Mods at 14 days a piece.

As for the 'We never get to do anything fun'... well, I dont really have a counter claim. We dont. Unless you go RRF (higher readiness Reserves) you aint getting deployed, so get used to Stoppage Drills and PT.

But I love the Army so much it doesn't matter.

Hmmm as I suspected. For me that would knock out way too much time currently devoted to climbing and other hobbies!

RRF and HRR are two diferent contracts. Plenty of guys in the reserves getting deployed these days. Be carefull what you wish for! ;-)

you do lead climbing?

So do they get pissed if you can't make those requirements? I'm thinking of signing up, but getting time off work to go play soldier won't sit too well. Tuesday nights would be fine, just the week or 2 every 3 months could be a bit of a killer. Just doing the 28 days and 14 days will be hard enough to slip through at work.
