i think it looks pretty awesome but Im getting the feeling they may be going for graphics/flashiness over realistic gameplay. that video really reminded me of what Cod 4 would look like if they tried to make a 'realism' mod for it...

will be interesting to see how Arma 2 and this compare....

Man, there are a hell of a lot of rose-coloured glasses around here...

ArmA 2 is "winning the race"? Guys, it looks like a pretty B-grade game if you ask me.

Tell me what is unrealistic about this trailer, and I'll concede the point. But honestly guys, nobody around here is giving OFP2 a fair go at all. IMO, this game looks a thousand times better in terms of both gameplay and graphics. (and yes, I know they pre-rendered the hell out of this, but ArmA 2 looks like ArmA 1 with new guns and an engine update).

Just because a game is looking mainstream doesn't mean it won't be realistic. It's not like there's no mainstream market for realism - what mod is EA flogging on their website at the moment? Project Reality, also known as the most popular mod in development for any game at the moment.

I'm just saying, if you looked at it objectively, OFP2 looks far better at the moment.

Im absolutely pumped for it, from what ive seen on previous trailers it looks very good, all the tech up-to-date not like M16A2's with the marines etc etc.

From ARMA's past with, well, the bugs, im looking much more forward to this.

The most mainstream realism will ever get is something like Cod 4's "Hardcore Mode". There truly isn't the main stream market for realism. Its a niche market dude.

I don't think it's at all niche, considering the ridiculous popularity of Project Reality and other realism mods. People obviously like the genre, it's just a step that not all developers want to take.

Operation Flashpoint and ArmA sold pretty well when they first came out, despite a highly realistic and tactical style of gameplay involved. I don't think there's any evidence at all from the material released that says "Operation Flashpoint 2 will be spammy fun" - quite the opposite in fact. Take a look at http://au.xbox360.ign.com/articles/955/955915p1.html and the opinion seems to be that the game is quite realistic.

To quote IGN -

"For fans that absolutely loved the hardcore nature of the first game, then yes, I'm told there's a difficulty mode where one bullet can indeed ruin your life. Of course, that kind of thing isn't exactly conducive to mass appeal, so there's going to be a more forgiving mode. With that said, there are no health packs. As one of the designers said, if your arm gets shot off, there's no magical power up that's going to give you a new one instantly."

So there

All that means is there's that magical power of regeneration that you find in 90% of games today. Personally I prefer the concept of a health pack rather than that of some ability to 'undo' bullet wounds :p

Well, as exhilarating as a game in which you get wounded, medevac'd to a foreign hospital and go through 5 months of rehabilitation would be, I think the gist of the article there was that there is no magical power of regeneration. I guess if you're shot, you're shot.

quote "If you get hit by a small round, say like a 9mm or a 5.56, and you've got body armour on and you get a wound, you can be stabilised - but you might suffer. You might get a limp. But there's no healing you up to full health again. Once you're hurt, you're hurt for the rest of the mission, so there is value in not getting shot."

all i can say is these new games suck the big one. i'm an eye candy freak but my rig wont be able to play these things at a decent frame rate i'll need a new computer . . . stupid game developers:disgust:
There comes a time in every musician's life when they must decide what instrument they should master. Few. If any are ever worthy enough to master. The cowbell.
That's pretty contradictory there McDeth... you really like eye candy, but you resent developers for putting more eye candy in (because upgrades are expensive)? :p

yes, they should make the eye candy independant of the system hardware, only then will we have a truely utopian society

Well they have being talking about doing that with cloud gaming I think its called. Anyway I'm still sitting her waiting for the day that video games will truly be virtual reality. Something akin to the matrix/ghost in the shell were you plug in and off you go. Then again we will have the whole issue of losing oneself in the net just like the matrix/ghost in the shell. SIGH I think I have gone cross eyed.

Yeah that stuff is creepy, but the prospect of being able to fight in a fully simulated world is incredibly cool, and certainly will come about within the next few decades.
