Posted November 3, 200816 yr Anyone out there an electrician? If so would you be able to give me an idea of the trade etc and work etc etc. I'm considering it for next year, have too much time on my hands. November 3, 200816 yr Not a electrician but I strongly support having a trade as long as it isn't being a Chef http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Signatures%20and%20Banners/VisP.png
November 3, 200816 yr have a mate that an electrician.... jus finished and started his aircon/refrigration apprenticship! He is rolling in the cash!!! like every trade australia is in high demand for em! Sparkys, plumbers, carpenters, brickys, Boilers.... u name it we need em. and if you are in the right spot u can make a killing even as an apprentice... (but thats mainly WA) dont expect a huge wage to start with, and depending on who u can work with small or large company expect long hours and early starts goes with most trades! but its a brillant skill to have jus like any trade is... practical quals are very good value! thats my opinion. (PS if you wanna combine an apprenticship with a good wage and job security look at the ADF!!! had a friend do that went in as sparky and now has a carpentry and sparky qual. he is still in the army as medic i believe last time i spoke to him!) @Vis i agree with that statement..... although cheffing is a skill for life! i jus recently got myself a job back in a kitchen to pay way thru uni. havent worked one since december last yr! im loving it! a posh little Cheese and Wine cellar, 'Providore' in Canberra. November 3, 200816 yr Frenzal is a sparky hopefully he'll see this thread and help ya out But IMO go for it son! Must go bed NN There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. November 3, 200816 yr My dad is a sparky and holds the high voltage certificate for a minesite in WA. They are ALWAYS looking for people from what I have heard. Not sure of the apprenticeship part. Can ask if you want, depending on where you are. He is based in around Kalgoorlie/Kambalda WA. Think there is likely a fair few opportunities with a lot of mines through WA where you can get paid quite well even while learning if you're keen. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
November 3, 200816 yr well i know a of a guy that went to my school he got a boilermaker apprenticeship went over to WA and was earning $20/hr for a first year! that sure beats my cheffing first yr at $7.20/hr even my third yr was only $14 or 15 /hr "I mean normally we nail threads like these down harder than a swarm of ninjas with nail guns," -- Bahlye
November 3, 200816 yr Author Cheers for the feedback guys. Yeah I'm in WA and was thinking about being a sparky and then heading out to possibly the mines or something. http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/opagamahons.jpghttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/aerialservice.bmp
November 4, 200816 yr yeah mines definitely a goer if want, great pay but it's pretty horrid apparently. lots of money to be had in port headland probably lots of 1st year avails to. im a first year painter, piss easiest job in the world and apparently you can be "qualified" at it
November 4, 200816 yr Cheers for the feedback guys. Yeah I'm in WA and was thinking about being a sparky and then heading out to possibly the mines or something. Well that being said Dogg you should really get your arse into gear. The mines in WA are screaming for tradesmen, stories of waiters and waitresses leaving their normal gig to get into the mines, just to drive haul trucks and start on 80k a year are not uncommon. Honestly, If I wasn't paying off a house in Adelaide and didn't have a total disgust for hot weather and flies I would be up there in WA in a flash, even if you only do it for 3-5 yrs you'll still double the salary you'd normally make out of the mines, setting yourself up with a house or at least a good portion of a house paid off giving you a great start for a young tacker like yourself. Don't get me wrong it's not all roses and grapes, you'd have to put up with, like I said, hot weather, homosexual flies around your face all day and long work hours 12/7 but yeah, could be a great start for ya. Put ya head down and arse up for a few years I say. -MOVED- thread to off topic section as it's not about the forums/servers/games Edited November 4, 200816 yr by cm. There he goes. November 4, 200816 yr Mate, i'll answer any Q's you have on TS. Typing is fail with beer in hand. On the Subject of mines, a fully licensed Systems Electrician can make up to and +3k a week depending on the gig you get. But with that said you don't go for the good quality wines and a big social agenda. I'm talking 10-12 hour days 24/7. It's work work work, sleep sleep sleep. Or if you get a good deal/company they will fly you in and out every few weeks (eg: 3 weeks work, one week off etc...) I can't tell you much about getting apprenticeships out there, i think mostly they want contractors straight out, although alot of the smaller pits run that sorta thing. With you living in WA you have the advantage of already being close'sh (most people go to WA first to get a job, then mines). but honeslty i'd say you're better off getting ya trade closer to home, cause all you'l really earn is beer money, nothing fancy. Unless you have already moved out, then ya struggling. You need to ask you're self what sort of Electrical work you wanna do, eg Domestic, industrial, construction, lines/power gen, motors/machines, vehicles etc... November 4, 200816 yr +1 Frenzal make sure you do some research into your trade and the possible specialisations. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Signatures%20and%20Banners/VisP.png
November 4, 200816 yr motors/machines, vehicles etc... +1 for that. Mines will also pay big dollars (not quite as high as high voltage sparkies) for Auto-Electricians and apprenticeships through the mines and their contractors (I dont know about WA but in Qld) are not difficult to come by. Evil Shenanigans!
November 4, 200816 yr In addition to the very good advice.... WA is booming for sparkies & so to SA.. All major contractors & MIne sites are allways looking for GOOD sparkies... note the GOOD!.. as there are plenty of crap ones out there... The crap ones cant even work out their own voltage drop calculations.. I struggle, but, I am not a sparky.. If you are good at what you do, you will allways get work. If you are willing to travel and / or have a specialty, you can earn big dollars.. Some of the highest payed are the guys who specialise in HV & EHV terminations.. Those boys get treated like gods, work hard when its on, but it is a specialised tallent & you have to be good or BANG! ..Good point Neva... North Qld is going well also.. http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpghttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmp
November 4, 200816 yr Dogg, I have the electrical trade and currently work for an outfit called Integral Energy In NSW. I think it's a fantastic idea for you to get a trade, I strongly recomend you try out with a power Generator Mob, Or your local Utility group. What you learn there will benifit you for the rest of your life. once you obtain your trade certificate, remeber to studdy a bit more at tefe or at Uni, the more paper the more money, your doors will open up. I currently design and Project manage massive infrastructure projects 33kV to 132kV Overhead and Underground, my budget currently is at 43M over the next three years. It all started with a Sparky ticket. On the side of my full time job I have a private bussines with my old man, we do all sorts of work from domestic install to security, audio and industural plc's. So yeah the opertunities just roll. And as a good sticker states: Put a spark in your life and marry an electrician. November 4, 200816 yr That video reminds me of a story about my brother who got a job helping my dad with lines from Paraburdoo to Channar (NW WA). Was in a harness and fiddling with the dead line (not yet comissioned) when lightening struck at some point and he ended up hanging from his harness. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
