Right most of you know I had to side line my new gaming rig and I've finally gotten myself back into a responsible fiscal position where I can put a little cash into my pc. A little while back I brought a new CPU for this pc its a Intel Core 2 duo E6750, LGA775 Pkg, 2.66GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 1333 MHz FSB under the pretence that it would fit on my current motherboard. Well I was wrong so now I need a new motherboard that will take that the Intel Core 2 duo E6750 as well as Sapphire HD4870 1G GDDR5 PCI E TVO so as always any recommendations are welcome I'm hoping to pick it up this Saturday and have it all up and running by the end of the day. Also keep in mind I don't have a sound card so I use the mother board with my 5.1 surround and more than 4 USB ports would be great.

As always thank you in advance guys.:hi:

It should just be a 775 socket right? Depending on what you are planning for an upgrade I would say a dual PCI Express motherboard, Heres a nice and cheap one I believe it has onboard sound and dual PCI-E which is good if you ever want crossfire or SLI

Asus P5NSLI S775 nFORCE 570SLI

This motherboard on the other hand is a fair bit more expensive (still relatively cheap) but it still pretty much comes with everything you would need for a long time:

Gigabyte GA-EP45T-DS3R P45+ICH10R FSB1600MHz DDR3 1900MHz (O.C) PCI-E x16 2.0(CrossFireX) SATAII RAI ----I would choose this one :p

For one it has Dolby home theater inbuilt so 5.1 is no problem, comes with Crossfire support, dual PCI express ports for if you ever want to double up on your Sapphire and pretty much support for most CPU's

I don't intend on upgrading this pc any further and I have no idea about the socket motherboards are something I have always over looked and left to those with more knowledge about pc's them myself. Thanks for the recommendation I'll start having a look at the 755 socket boards then.

How many USB ports does it have Bahlye ?

Also what does it the CPU mean when it says it "requires eclectically compatible board - PCG 06" ?

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Signatures%20and%20Banners/VisP.png

If that CPU didn't fit your current motherboard make sure you have the correct ram also (will need DDR2).

As for a motherboard, I'd recommend a

MotherBoard Intel S775 Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L

It's pretty basic, while still having a few features you'll probably never use and will save you $30-70 (depending where you get it over the P45T-DS3R).

Also what does it the CPU mean when it says it "requires eclectically compatible board - PCG 06" ?

Ignore that crap. Any of the motherboards in this thread that have been mentioned will work.

Going for a triple post!

What monitor will you be running? Ignore this post if you've already purchased the 4870.

Monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 940BW plus - running DVI

I have 2 x 1GB matched set of DD2 ram

No I haven't brought the 4870 yet but I'm pretty sure its the card I will buy.

Ohh snap your right as usual Davee there is a significant price difference.

Gigabyte GA-EP45T-DS3R P45+ICH10R - $198.00

Gigabyte GA-EP43-DS3L P43+ICH10 - $155.00

With those prices and the 4870 being $435.00 I'm looking at a large chunk of cash.

From what I have seen on the Gigabyte website the GA-EP43-DS3L certainly supports my CPU, DDR2 ram and has a X16 expansion slot for my 4870 or 4850.

Hmm looks like I'm going to have to drop the 4870 because my power supply is only rated for 460W. The 4870 needs a 500W and above which can only mean more money spent I don't have.

Ok so I'm going to drop back to the 4850 since there rated at 450W and above the only question now is which is better the Gecube or the Gigabyte I personally have had little to do with either company.

Eh say what now mate you offering me a mother board because I will gladly exchange Beer or Alcohol of your choice for computer parts. :D

Vis, I can't be bothered googling that montior. Is it 22", 24" 30000" ? 19" ?

If it's 22" or 24" then having the 4870 would be good, but you'd probably only need the 512mb version over the 1GB version.

If its only a 19" or lower, stick with the 4850, it's more than capable of taking care of 1280x1024 or whatever res is being run. Doesn't matter what brand you get, they are all reference cards. Usually the only difference is what comes with them - 4850's don't come with any extras like games AFAIK.

I've got one in my rig, on a 22" WS monitor and it doesn't skip a beat. Sure the 4870 would be nice to ramp up the AA to 8x, but not really required.

You might be able to squeeze in a new PSU if you get a 512mb 4870, and the cheaper motherboard.

Eh say what now mate you offering me a mother board because I will gladly exchange Beer or Alcohol of your choice for computer parts. :D

i would take the deal only if u havent read my other thread in tech support area. if u havent read it sure - ill swap ya a 6 pack for my mobo...it works...great...

im in newmarket drinking rather heavily at the moment.....

My monitor is only a widescreen 19" so your right Daveee I don't need the Sapphire HD4870 1GB since its $435.00 while the Gecube HD4850 1GB is only $265.00 and will do the job fine.

Ohh and HAHA Charger you sneaky bugger I'll have to pass on that deal I have plenty of old pc parts out back I don't need already.

http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Signatures%20and%20Banners/VisP.png

What I was getting at is you don't need 1GB of memory if you have a tiny monitor. Sure if you had a 24" LCD then by all means go for it, but with the small resolution you'll be running it's simply a waste of money.

Stick with the 512mb version, or go up to a 512mb 4870 as you'll benefit from it's speed before you will an extra 512mb of memory on the 4850.

Dont be fooled by brand names. If the card has a standard heatsink and board then it will be made in the same plant as all the others. if it has a special board layout or a better heatsink then it may be worth paying a premium over a generic one.

http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=hd4870

$435 seems a little steep for one but prices are rising and if you buying local you will pay a little more for the card but you do get to kick there door in if it craps itself.

Well visone, Jerrif has the P35-DS3L and he has 6x USB ports at the back and then two on the front through the case connection. The only thing is that it only has 4x SATAII ports versus the 6x you get with the DS3/P. Just look up the specs on http://www.gigabyte.com.au

You won't need to bother with crossfire so DS3, DS3-R or DS3-L will suffice from gigabyte. The whole DS3 series has onboard audio.

Generally as far as I can tell, it's a toss up between Gigabyte or ASUS in the $200-250 range, as they offer the best feature range to price ratio in that segment.

What motherboard do you currently have? (CPU-Z will tell you if you don't know)

My current rig is as follows.

System Information

CPU: Intel Pentium D 820 2.80GHz

Mainboard: Gigabyte 8VM800PMD-775

Mem: 2GIG Kingston DDR2

HDD: 200GIG Maxtor 250GIG Maxtor

Video: Sapphire ATI HD2600XT 512M DDR3

Sound: Onboard

OS: XP 32bit

Ok I thought the 1GB cards would be a improvement based on some information I read somewhere else on the forums. Buying through umart who I am comfortable dealing with at this point I can get a 1GB card for the same price of a equivalent 512mb nVidia card. I still don't have any sort of credit card nor do I have the time to wait on electrical goods so I'll buy local and it saves me allot of hassles if anything is amiss.

As for the comment about buying generic I have being then and I have being burnt before. I buy name brand because name brand comes with grantees and I know that if the store won't replace it the brand name comes into effect and they will.

Next question what is better should I pay $299.00 for the Gigabyte with the large copper heat sink.

http://203.185.232.2/dbs/images/products/10242.jpg

Then there is the Asus for $299.00 although I'm not sure about that heat sink at all.

http://203.185.232.2/dbs/images/products/10203.jpg

Or the Gecube for $265.00 although it doesn't look like it will run hotter.

http://203.185.232.2/dbs/images/products/10176.jpg

I am quite worried since this series of cards is well know for running relatively hot and it does hot up here especially in my little pc room.

I have the 965-DS3P with 4usb back 2usb front.. Its way more then I need lol

and 2 IEEE 1394a ports for uploading video from my video camera.

I use onboard sound.

It does everything I need it to :)

Fear is another word for weakness.

Vis, stop looking at 1GB cards or I will hunt you down when I am in QLD next and slap you silly - I am not joking about this either. You do not need that much memory due to the size of your monitor regardless of how the cost comparison comes in against whatever nvidia is offering.

You also really don't need to compare ATi's offerings vs nvidia's simply because as it stands at the current point in time ATi smashes the crap out of anything nvidia have on the market not only in price but also in performance.

Stick with a 512mb 4850 or 4870.
