i think everyone has noticed a massive increase in lag on these servers lately . any ideas whats causing it and how can it be fixed . its turning alot of people off . its driven me to go for a deer stalk .

pipe lag you can blame people streaming tv shows.

Ausforces mod was recently added, running on the same server ?

It's crazy. I don't think this is pipe/bandwidth lag... wouldn't that make everyone's pings skyrocket?

 

It almost seems like the server is overloaded (hardware wise). This is like... intermittent dropouts every 5-10 seconds

possibly. Whatever it is it's making it relatively unplayable.

There is currently some backend file work and maintenance being done that would be the cause of the 'lag'. It is temporary, however it will likely be an issue for the rest of tonight.

 

This has been the case a few times for some very short periods in the last few days.

 

It cant be helped, it has to be done and its the price we pay for free, well maintained servers.

GSA are migrating servers so all servers are being used at the moment for work - however it was not expected to cause any problems but being the resource hog and bandwidth choker that PR is, it doesnt like to share and so it has lagged up a little. Cant be helped.

Do you know how much backing up and work is required to move a whole server farm?

I'm pretty sure I could do it in about 5 minutes.

lol actually spent all week moving servers myself :-)

 

I asked because it's been lagging for 2-3 days and "all night" didn't really fit

with the period I've seen lag over.

Yes, but I did also say it has been happening the last few days for short periods which was also because of this sort of work.

 

The server we are on is about the only one not part of the mass software O/S upgrades and it is therefore being used to backup other servers/transfer files/download/etc. It takes that long because the connections for this work have been throttled to minimise impact on our PR servers - otherwise it would be completely unplayable - as in you wouldnt even be able to join the server.

It was fine last night after Bahyle restarted for the squad bug. Played albasrah with no lag at all. Although it was only ~28 players.

 

Edit: By the way jim, like mature adults I'm sure we'd all understand if you guys would prefer to take down the servers for a day or two to get it all sorted

Our servers wont be taken down, just please bear with us all if you do encounter lag. Its a temporary thing and once again, its the price we all pay for free, well maintained servers.

Once the upgrades are done it will all settle again.

Just stay away from the jets and heli's and it'll be all good when the lag hits.
