Having attended the latest milsim event up here, I'm seriously considering buying my own clothing to wear next time. For those involved in milsims/laser tag/paintball/hunting/whatever, I have two questions:

a) what's your preferred [relatively easily obtainable] camouflage pattern for .au bush use?

b) do you have a preferred place of purchasing this stuff?

Auscam is a bit ugly but the colouration is good for the bush. That said, it's in no way useful for urban environments.

US ACU digicam is more neutral and might be useful across a wider range of environments but probably doesn't suit our bush that well (or does it)?

US multicam might also be appropriate - or any of the other billion designs out there.

I guess I want a 'one size fits all' choice and such a thing doesn't exist :-/

Multicam, works really well for our bush and most of our urban enviroments. You can get some great multicam "copies" from Ebaybanned.com and is relatively cheap but then again i am a Multicam fanboy. But you still cant go wrong with Auscam as most disposal store stock them, I have trouble find sizes to fit. Remember camo in general works well in nearly all bush/forest/jungle enviroments, its how you use it that makes it effective.

Great to see you getting in on the Milsim action, +1 to you Seg

how dare you say AUSCAM is ugly! most beautifull patern there is! and i really doubt ACU would work to well over here, from wat ive seen ACU isnt the best for woodland, and its mainly for over range, not up close like (im guessing here, around 100 -200m) most of these events would take place in. but if u do use ACU make sure its dirty as, only way its effective.

ive also heard the german fleckentarn is pretty good for over here, but i would personaly go with the multicam

Here's a few types of camo, judge for yourself. I'm a fan of Flecktarn if you dont like Auscam.

But Keep it mind, AusCam was designed for the Australian bush, so its not a bad pattern to have in your arsenal.

Multicam is the way to go mate.

My full kit is multicam (even got the molle tacvest, buffer padding + pouches etc from Crye).

The stuff is magic - very well suited for the dry Qld bush - I've found the field down here in NSW that I play on only has certain areas that I actualy blend into, the rest I can hide in but not for too long seeing as it's quite dark rainforest type hills and valleys.

But in saying that, it still works wonders - gives you the few seconds you need to get the first shot off.

Love you long time gunner <3

I like to wait till im nearly done, then pull out and yell "COVERING FIRE!!!"

Ahhh. Im so glad I have a GF and she doesnt read these forums...

Seg. Swordsman is correct. Multicam is the way to go for MilSims. He was one of those that used it at LazerStorm this year and it worked very well. I prefer Auscam only because I have heaps of it and will eventually go multicam. Speak to Chopper and Owl next time you are out as they have the real stuff and swear by it. Owl is ADF and wears Auscam all the time and still prefers Multi.

ACU is not good in our bush and even stands out in urban at night times. Woodlands is too dark. Multi or Aus is the way to go.

Blasphemers I say! Blasphemers!

I dont like Multi but thats just me. Its not a bad camo, I just like Auscam cause its, well Aussie lol.

Swordy, you got real Crye gear? Gucci. Would've cost a mint though, no?

tigerstripes are great in dense jungle but i dunno about its affectiveness for aussie terrain .

Sure do. The fatigues I had that were original Crye I borrowed from a friend of mine who was in the Airforce - unfortunately I had to give them back (since picked up some cheapies and use those at the moment) but I've got a lead on some nice cheap geniune stuff that I'll be picking up when the time is right. ;)

All my tac vest etc. is crye gear though - well worth it if you want the guarantee that the stuff isn't going to fall apart :)

The only cammo you should be using in Australia is AUSCAM.

Oh yeah, because the Army never got anything wrong hey? ;) haha

Thanks for the feedback. I kinda see the patriotic sway of Auscam but I'm dissuaded by its more obvious appearance in other environments.

I'll leave the ghillie suit as an option for the future if - something to do while I'm waiting for the round of Bi Ming to finish.

make your own ghillie suit mate .

From the appendages of your fallen enemies.

Ha! Then I just need to acclimatise to hunkering down in my ideal environment - a pile of corpses. Excellent.

Nonsense - no need to acclimatise to the pile - it'll be growing at such a rapid rate you'll find it impossible to adjust to the constant change.

As for the camo - Auscam is all well and good - but I find it easier to recognise. If people who have no idea about camo see Auscam, they know its Australian Army camo - why? Because they recognise the pattern.

Not to say that after a period of time Multicam can't be recognised, but Multicam seems to blend in better even if you know the pattern - it's definitely one of the well made camo patterns, second only to MARPAT in my books. I've got team mates who've been stepped on while using MARPAT.

for 'military grade' uniforms and genuine gear,

platatac.com.au - top of the line gear in auscam

otherwise, kitbag.com.au does good deals

don't know about other parts of NSW but all the hikes I've embarked upon have vegetation much like the one in this picture (probably largely due to the fact I hike around the Sydney coast area and occasionally up in the Blue Mountains)

Digicam works unbelievably well too.

For physical stores you can hop into and browse, there's Mitchell's Adventures in Melbourne and Sydney and the guys down in Goulburn were really good on the deals: http://www.ozsurplus.com.au/

There's also Brisbane Disposals (claims to be the largest disposal store in Aus).

On the topic of shiny auscam...

the sound they made while bush walking made it seem like I was doing mean things to little furry animals inside my pants :p

segmentor where do you play ?

Ghillie suits or yowie suits as we call them. To make a good one can take between 8-15 hours to build from scratch.

Around Brisbane, Recon. Which fields in particular? Don't know yet, I've only just started :-)
