Ok This thread should be a discussion on your favourite technique on running servers.

 

Let me start so you guys can gather what I am yapping on about.

 

The way I like to avoid pests in servers is with a strong hand. sometimes that means getting a few innocents by making a few wrong judgments.

 

Personally I wouldn't mind if it was by some poor judgment that i got kicked/banned as long as i got to prove my innocence otherwise. For a few reasons.

1. It keeps trashout

2. It keeps the server generally happier.

 

Basically some hackers can bring down grief on a whole server where as if someone was just simply kicked/ banned it brings temp fixable grief of them.

 

Then they should be offered a chance to prove themselves.. If such hacking effects are still happening then you obviously made a mistake. But trust me that is hardly ever the case. Having been admin on servers for years (not BF2/mods) I can basically tell you this system is a lot better.

 

Tell me what you think.. The whole post here is an opinion piece and is only to be taken in that way. No insult or anything is attended if such has occurred then please notify me. Sorry for poor grammar etc.

I'm not fond of the idea of kicking people on a whim.. I certainly don't want bigd to earn that kind of name for itself.

 

98% of the time BigD is a mature and pleasant place to play... when it isn't it gets dealt with. It is not possible for the admin team to catch 100% of all behaviours and actions, but on the whole I think it is policed fairly.

 

I may, however, be somewhat biased

Hackers are caught through having in game screen shots sent to the server and viewed thanks to Punksbusted (pretty sure this still goes on).

 

Retards are dealt with via player reports.

 

What more needs doing??

I'm just saying systems like that always have holes and stuff.

There is actually more praise to servers that stop it all together and there is rarely collateral.

I was subjected to this 'getting a few innocents by making a few wrong judgments' thing when I last played on battlearena back in .07. BigD was empty, Battlearena was nearly full and it was around 3pm Aus time on a Saturday.

 

I happened to have squadded up with a bunch of guys from a clan one of the admins particularly disliked. Couple that with the fact that it was probably midnight/early morning? over there and how 'we' (I just climbed up a rooftop to clear and cap while the pilots all landed on adjacent tops) were all grabbing pilots kits to parachute into al basrah apparently pissed him off so he banned everyone in the squad on the spot. It was only when I took it upon the forums that there was much revolt by their players.

 

Now, whenever I see that server on my list, it's almost always empty and fills me with many unpleasant memories.

 

I reckon all this stuff with the retards and idiots will 'die off' soon enough.

I've seen that on one of the american servers, though I managed to make a video and get the admin stripped of his powers

just my two cents, i think the servers are pretty good atm, a few nubs in GC sometimes (myself included) but over all there really isnt much tardish behavior. i have only seen one hacker in my time playing PR and he only lasted one round it was so obvious he was hacking.

 

i think for the moment BigD is doing all right

PR in general is suffering from a recent surge in hacking/disruption to the servers.

Most PR server admins are reporting hacking/disrupting activity on their servers as of late.

Fortunately we suffer less than most of the PR servers, mainly due to our distance/isolation and (hopefully) to our diligence. Dont think we arent working every day to weed out as many of these guys as we can, but its not an easy or quick process in any way.

 

You may not be upset with an instaban - sort it out later scenario, but most people are and it would be us that would have to listen to the ranting and then apologise for being too hasty - which we wont do because we wont ban people without a damn good reason 99% of the time.

I think the Admin have things down pat, the server encounters a few tools here and there but they get sorted very quickly, most of the players on the server will burn down a tool and they generally dont wanna come back or they realise their Toolishness and get on with mature play. Else repeated actions see the Admin get them with player reports... I think the insurgence of nilla nubs will always cause this but some will stay and mature in PR players the rest will quickly tire and go back to nubby land..

Meh the admins do a great job IMO. You guys wanna play too.

 

I would be righteous with mah Ban Hammer if it were my server, but cause its not, I applaud the admins for their great work. There is a reason BigD is the best Aussie server, and it aint cause you hand out free cake.

Its dam easy to become to overzealous with the ban hammer and in leaner times it would have spelt the end of bigD servers. Everyone gets pissed off and has a tard moment luckily most of us known that its annoying a irresponsible to take out on our fellow players. Were here to make sure that the people who forget that simple ideal don't ruin the game for the everyone else.

 

Its not about a power trip, and its not about elitism its all about making the game as fun as possible for the majority of people who want to play the game as well as we can provide it. Sure we drop the ball sometimes with things like long map times, accidentally setting servers up incorrectly and so fourth. However we more than make up for it because between the 6 or so admins we have you can contact us a good 18 hours of the day. That's not half bad because I have yet to see a admin in this team who doesn't have a PITA real life situation to deal with.

 

To sum it all up it is insanely hard to be a admin its time consuming and it detracts from the game in so many ways but we keep at it and I say we do a dam fine job.

Yeah I think the admins do as good a job as possible without resorting to heavy handed policies. If you start banning people left right and centre without correct evidence then you will have people more concerned with watching their back and not enjoying their gaming and the general vibe of the community will be down as a result.

 

I would however like to see some feedback from Admins on TMR's submitted. Even if it's as simple as a notification that it had been received and possibly what action would be taken on it.... (i.e; player added to watch list or none taken as it was considered out of character or other).... I've submitted a couple in the past and was sorta left with the feeling a) I had wasted their time or b) my time and effort was wasted...

You are never wasting your time or our time by submitting TMRs to the admin team. All reports are taken seriously and most of the time at the very least the player in question is put on the "watch list", if there is concrete evidence provided usually a ban of some sort is issued almost immediately.

 

What is a waste of the admins time is people whining on global chat about repeated TKs or other tardishness such as last night on Kashan on MEC where apparently some tardishness was going on at MEC main.

 

The problem being that I was on USMC and therefore I couldn't really help with the MEC situation. I tried my best to mediate from the USMC side on global with was largely fruitless so I advised that players there should take screenshots and send them in with a player report as every player should do if there is not an admin right near them ready to help out.

 

Anyway to cut a long story short at least 2 or 3 players said they had taken screenshots of the troublemaker(s) and would submit them. However nothing has been received by the admins, and truthfully I would be surprised if any reports on the matter are ever made as they very very rarely are. People seem to love whining on global when a problem occurs but then somehow lack the dedication to follow up on it and get the tard punished.

Yeah I say best to sneaky submit, get the evidence say nothing and submit it....I always warn people that their behaviour is not acceptable in the eyes of the community cut it out or face ebing reported. then the balls in their court, I usally PM advising Admins to be aware of a players action for future reference in relation to bans...

and don't put in the forums send the message to the admin they do take care of the problems

I've submitted a few. It's generally just a pita to do because you're only mad until it stops happening, and then you realize it's a game and move on with your life. But yeah, generally I try to keep on top of it. If people are sus I believe that they should be reported asap. Tardish behaviour I tend to just say "whatever" and whine a little in global () and move on with my life.
