Didn't see this mentioned but since we all like realism shooters I thought I would give a heads-up.

 

If you are not aware of what Insurgency is, it's a total conversion for HL2. Basically it's pure CQC (with some larger maps thrown in). You need a game that allows you to download Source SDK Base in the Tools menu in Steam.

 

The game is based on hitscan technology so on the larger maps all you need to do is put the IS on a body and down they go.

* New cvar ins_squadshuffle lets server admins manage the randomize weapons option on round restart (default: off)

* Sniper rifle aiming has been fixed.

* Improvements and fixes to all maps, including performance optimizations and fixes for several reported exploits.

* Improved animation code. Smoother head sway while moving.

* Many new weapon sounds.

* New and improved soundscapes in several maps.

* Bullet ricochet effect has been removed.

* Improved HUD: less intrusive, compass removed. Only the "new" objective indicator system is present, and it can be toggled on/off and flashed on screen.

* Some iron sights have been adjusted (taken further away from the player).

* Some frequent DX9-related crashes have been fixed.

* Reduced ladder climbing speed.

* Improved Al-Kadesiah scope / animations ("black scope bug" fixed).

* Al-Kadesiah 3D-scope allows now a bit of lateral vision (doesn't cover the entire screen).

* Players will now be able to use and reload an M203 properly when picking up an M16/M203 from the ground.

* Fixed RPG requiring two right clicks to unshoulder after firing.

* Fixed scoped view while leaning for the sniper rifles.

* Fixed commander objectives having wrong colours.

* Prevented several objects that provide cover from disappearing depending on the players view distance.

* Fixed long distance texture problems while in scoped view.

* Improved weapon data values. Some values may vary between the release candidate and the Beta 2.1 Release version.

* Fixed animation latency issue for systems with lower performance.

* Improved overhead maps.

* Changed teammate colors in overhead map.

i like this mod, but i dont like playing it lol. for some reason CQC doesnt appeal to me even when the game is realistic, it may be i've just been scarred by all the other arcade shooters which are predominantly CQC.

It's got twice the hardcore deaths of PR... weapon physics are impeccable.

 

I like InS but would never leave PR for it.

Lacking in depth, perhaps?

 

I think of it as a mindless shooter that I play when I need something simple. Thing is, I'd rather play PR when I can. I'm just glad I can play PR without the BF2 engine bothering me any more. T'was a big step for me... ;)

I love insurgency but due to the linearity of the maps, and tiny sizes it gets old really quick IMO. I feel like you can play the PR maps over and over again and very seldom have the same battle twice... that's certainly not the case for insurgency... pretty much every time I play a map, it's the same beaten formula over again...

 

It's an amazing mod, I mean the work they put into it, it really deserved the mod of the year. The problem is that it lacks depth, as SOP says.

I have the previous version installed played it for about 2 days really wasn't feeling it can't explain why. Might have being my team mates were all 12 year olds who dribbled non-stop crap into the mics that's most likely it.

My question is with all the moddability of the source engine why can't they make much bigger maps and maybe support more players?

 

WHY???

 

They have made bigger maps this release, it's the main feature of this release. Big open areas for a change from tight alleyways and house to house fighting.

 

However, in general the source engine can't handle large maps. **** the source engine was severely outdated when it first came out, since then they haven't made too many improvements on it.

Some of the maps in HL2 were pretty huge with all the driving around and such so I find it hard to believe it can't handle bigger maps.

 

oh yeah they look pretty huge until you noclip out and take a look at the way the map is made, it's alot of smoke and mirror effects to make it seem bigger. And I also mean in comparison to other engines, it's one of source's downfalls.

Couple of questions for some of the BigD players though:

 

1. Are the weapons sounds, including the nearby sounds overly quiet for you? Like muffled pop gun? I hear distance gunfire quite loud, or as loud as it should be.

 

2. AK Full Auto, hardly any recoil?

 

3. Movement speed and visuals still comical to you?

Yeah 1,2 & 3 agreed.. a little weird. They've toned down the recoil considerably, especially when firing off the hip! I don't know if it's a good or bad thing.

 

Anyway I had a go on the GA server this afternoon and wow... do I suck! I played with Poncho from TEA and he was going mad about the team not doing their job... well all I was doing was dying, and only once of 15 deaths did I see where the guy shot me from. When Poncho said it's all about snap reflexes, he wasn't kidding. It's a lot like playing UT/CS imo in that sense, but in a more realistic way (who shoots first generally wins). I'm way too used to the expansiveness of the PR levels, and when I did try to skulk around, I got owned immediately :disgust:

Which is a good thing about PR, the coded in "have to stop and steady". Took a little while to get used to but makes a whole lot more sense now.

 

INS is very pew pew but that does appeal to most Source players I would assume.

 

As for the sounds, glad it's not my setup then. That is the kicker for me, I need to feel like I'm firing my bang bang gun.

 

Try GA again, all the maps have been added. Playing one of the new ones, I was getting pwned, playing one I know was easy because you know exactly where enemy may be due to the linearity of the whole game/maps.

 

Spoiled with PR I reckon. PR is getting close to the ultimate shooter (for me), just let down by you know what.

I've only played the previous version but I agree with you on all counts. I do like how your partly expended magazines are retained and how the round in the chamber is kept when you switch magazines.

If I was to play this game, I would spend all my time filling out Incident Reports and removing people from the servers.

 

Played tonight, let the demo record and listened to all the crap, insults, constant mic drivel and TKing. Had enough evidence to give some people holidays 10 times over.

 

But will I? Probably not, other people want to GameOp and I want them to fill out Incident Reports so they can take over. Painful...

 

Game plays very similar, no depth, nothing interesting about it.
