Very interested in how this turns out as I was a big fan of DC and some of my DC-playing friends of old are involved with the project. I believe Tonka, who used to admin the old 3FL DC server, is a moderator on the official boards. We used to PM a bit and he would fill me in on how it was turning out.

Don't expect a realism shooter though!

You've already ruined these forums for me, I have no desire to read your rhetoric or the pathetic arguments you get yourself in to, or the personal vendetta you have against me, so please, do not talk to me. Ever. About anything.

Waiting for GameArena to host the download so I get it unmetered

I was a little underwhelmed by single player to be honest; I guess I've been spoiled to the point where if I shoot someone in the head, I expect them to fall down :p

QFT: Your computer is smart man. It tells you not to play the second worst PR map [burning Sands] (first is Wanda Shan).

QFT: if you dont get pissed off when you lose you dont care enough

Oh noes, even DC had head shots. Why is it that these developers think multiple hits to head only to have people turn around and shoot you, is fun?

I'm 10 mins from demo download completion, I'll be on later tonight.

LOVED DC - bought FFOW on release, played for less than a week and haven't tried it since. They couldn't have screwed up the release of this title any more if they tried. It came out in February... The demo comes out now. Go figure.

Not such a bad game, and I'm sure it'd be great on Xbox360 - but it's a console game first, PC game second.

I've a lot of respect for Trauma and Frank Delise, but this is just a huge disappointment given what it could of, and should have been. Personally - with my ill informed opinions - I blame THQ for forcing a VERY early release.

Can you please expand? Haven't had a chance to play it yet and I would appreciate your take on it (if you have the time or the inkling to do it).

Love the drones. Great unique feature.

Typical spammy FPS, but in my opinion worth the current $50 rrp.

OK, finally had a quick game on GSA. 10 minutes of play time, I couldn't stomach any more.

First off, menus were responsive, game maps loaded quickly, server browser took it's time to locate all the servers available. Only 3 people playing (got up to 6).

Game ran like arse on my system. I had 1024x768 and everything Low and I could only manage 40fps and a non-smooth 40 at that (E8400@4.05, 4GB RAM, OC 7900GS). At low it was jagged and freakishly ugly.

Map I played, forget the name, looked very derelict and suited the atmosphere. Massive view distance, even on Low. Frontline system is not much different from the system we are used to in PR, 2 contestable flags, cap and move up to the next one or 2.

Capping system is laughable. Zone appears about 5-10 metres wide and caps quickly, even by yourself, so in the time I played we chased each others tails a bit. Having a small zone means that you know exactly where the enemy is going to be and players were putting air strikes on their position very frequently.

Explosion effects, suppression and wounding are all very good and I'm glad that developers are trying to put them in. Explosion effects were damn good actually (again, even on Low).

Anyone can hop in any vehicle and they seem to spawn rapidly. The sound in this area is a bit of a let down. You can be 15-20 metres away and they seem unusually quiet, even their weapon firing sounds at small distances is meek and forgettable. PR, and some other games, have set the bar here (even if PR vehicles can be heard at too great a distance), the sounds are LOUD, especially the small arms fire and it's satisfying to tap off a few at your enemy. Tank battles, while I only had one, seemed just strange. Is it me or does the main gun fire projectiles overly slow?

Mounted guns on top of the jeeps have some silly cone of fire and seem ineffective all round. Easier to use your rifle on enemy infantry.

I didn't try the drones, even in early development, I thought it was a useless shiny thing for the kids to play with. Interesting theory but that's not going to get bums on seats.

I'm sorry for the rambling nature of my review, I'm just a little shocked by how uninteresting it is. Have I been spoiled by other games such as PR, RO, or INS (seeing a similarity there - all 'realism' shooters based on real events)? I can include DC in that list because DC was real, DC could be tactical, DC weapons were the best things since sliced bread at the time. DC rifles were loud, accurate and effective against soft targets. Mounted 50 cals were brutal and a personal favourite of mine. The situation was real, the Gulf War, the weapons and vehicles were recognisable and all very cool in their own way (except the Saiga).

What are we left with? Something futuristic that panders to children with lots of shiny toys and simple, jumping around gameplay at it's heart. It's a far cry from DC, which was one of the most memorable games of it's time, and I think Frontlines will just eek out its existence and disappear without leaving any indelible mark. DC was simple at its core but had levels of advancement that allowed more interested players to branch off into. Heli pilots, such as myself, dedicated tankers, jets, engineers, AT or just plain old on-foot fighting.

I never played BF42 and DC was my second foray into online gaming after CS/DOD. I downloaded DC because I saw the weapons and the vehicles and thought that was current and would be cool to fiddle with. First map was the epic Lost Village and the first enemy I came across I killed with a short burst. I knew I was hooked from that moment on.

First loading Frontlines, I was turned off by the spawn screen with all the different roles, liked the map and then thought the weapons had uninteresting names (Mongol Pistol - I mean, WTF is that, who calls a weapon that?) and the entire game was nothing that really called to me.

Marketing tip, and I can't believe you missed this Kaos, DC2. That's all you needed to do and it would of sold like hotcakes. The Unreal engine with its good netcode, effects and destructible environments, ported into the same, simple game that was the original DC based on just past conflicts (weapons are still relevant), some new features like ingame demo recording, lean, suppression, VOIP, squads, clan/competitive community features (shoutcast/TV spectating features) etc. etc. and you would of been richer beyond your wildest dreams.

Now, you have Frontlines to be remembered by and I think I have forgotten what you did already.

Note: If you like the game, good for you. Tell me why.

Love you long time gunner <3

I like to wait till im nearly done, then pull out and yell "COVERING FIRE!!!"

Strange, my pc is much lower spec than yours (E2160@1.8, 2gb ram, x1950pro 512mb) yet I was running the one touch 'high' setting at 25-30fps, and it was rarely laggy (only bad spot was 2xhelis crashing on top of me). On all round medium I was sitting on 60fps and smooth as.

Try the drones. They are very effective (however one teams to me is a bit better than the other teams units) and Ive used them well to defend flags at a but of a distance. Also good for decoy ;)

The quick spawn times do really bug me though. Dont know if thats any different in the full version (I think theyve had a patch released already IIRC).

The thing about DC that I liked, and similarly in PR (except for JDAM) is that if you wanted an airstrike, you asked someone to come and do it for you. That person had to have the skills to manually drop his clusterbombs on target.

You wanted the guided SA3 to take out that F16? Yourself, or another player, got in thing and manually guided that thing onto the target.

You wanted that MBT taken out at 300 metres? You spawned AT, worked out your elevation/drop and you dumbfired those missiles exactly where you wanted them to be.

You wanted that Apache pilot to cover you while you moved in on the flag? That pilot had to have several, several, several hours of practice to do it well.

Practice equalled skill, skill was noticeable and you appreciated other players and their abilities at different things, even forming friendships because their skills complemented your own.

This whole point-and-click pandering that seems to be going on these days makes me feel ill to my stomach. Precision airstrike via point and click? Computer-controlled turrets? Sigh.

Two years on and still no one has really done it. First developer to really put it on the line, follow the guide ( http://dslyecxi.com/bestoftactical.html )and get it right, wins my admiration and support. I love PR but I feel the BF2 engine is a piece of sh** and really lets it down.

I'll be an old man before a game I want or really like hits the market.

SOP, you and I are completely in agreeance. The game does some things right. It does some things wrong. But more than that, everything it does, has already been done, and done better. The one exception to this, is the toys. The remote controlled gizmo's are the one signature of this game, and all it'll be remembered for. Those that actually play the game for ANY period of time will also remember that they are simply... a gizmo. A signature. They are essentially what would have ruined the game if it weren't for all of the other crap elements.

What the hell is it with these games (I'm lookin at you BF2 and COD4) that think that "radar" shows up live human bodies? UAV's showing people indoors? Remote Helicopters with heart sensors? WTF? If you remove the chance of stealth, flanking and defence, you ruin the game!

Oh by the way, this spiritual successor to DC, with all of it's Helicopters and Jets... THEY DIDN'T INCLUDE JOYSTICK SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF???? How can a game like this NOT have native joystick support?!?!? It's off the Unreal engine - surely there's one line of code that already existed that they just needed to slot in there. Oh, and they also suffered Dice's folly of releasing a game with a broken server browser. Those who ignore the past are destined to repeat it.

Bottom line for me, is that this game had the real potential, to be what many of us wanted. What we got, was a whole lot of great sounding talk, and at VERY best, an absolutely mediocre game.

Meh, FFOW lost me within the first two days. Actually did better than ET:QW's :) Only tried the demo for two hours :)

Servers are fully adjustable which is nice, spawn times can be changed, kits removed, hell even vehicle classes removed.

Thats why we have an Infantry Server for the retail guys.

BTW, for anyone who does want to check it out, the good news is the file we have is the same as whats being released, so no one will have to redownload.

Yeh, played the Demo last night. Ultra Short review: Very ordinary.

I played it on full graphics, everything maxed out at 1280x1050. Graphics still look pretty dodgy. Bit like Cod4's slap on textures. Real disapointing seeing as UT3 on the same engine looked pretty good.

Game play itself was pretty standard, run and gun. The kits are pretty unbalanced, Sniper+Drones=Win.

The maps are very linear, go to front line, shoot shoot shoot, go to next front line shoot shoot shoot etc...

My advice, if you're still a fan of PR, but looking for a new vice: Keep looking. Pr is superior in every way. I agree with what (who ever it was) said, the drones are the only cool aspect, and its really not enough.

I'll be looking forward to see what the 1.20 patch brings myself, besides the new map and conquest mode, VOIP would be nice.
