How to designate targets via SOFLAM

Watch and learn. One thing the video misses out on is the CAS map marker, you can place one with the T rose, top left. "Need Close Air Support" This will assist pilots in the "removal" of your problem. Also note that you can laser statics and the ground for an area attack.

From the pilots standpoint its preferable if you do it in this order.

  1. Make sure a JET or ATTACK HELICOPTER is in the air.
  2. Take out your SOFLAM and zoom in on the target.
  3. Use your T rose and "Need Close Air Support"
  4. Use your T rose again and "Laser Target" (provides radio feedback for pilots this way)
  5. Repeat step 3 every 15 seconds untill target is destroyed.

The attack variants of the light helicopters can also laser target things, press "2" when in the co-pilot seat and right click to lase.

No prob, and its "sight" not sigh :p

Commander can place the red CAS markers which automatically provide a laser target.

The yellow CAS markers that officers, spec ops and commanders (and possably light attack helis) can place are just to let the pilot that there is a target marked in the area

Not bad now we just need one showing it from the pilots perspective. I remember seeing one on the PR page I think I'll try and find it.

Meh my skills are lacking. I can't find it, anyone else know the one I am talking about?

You only need to left click to lase a target, the other stuff is just to let the pilots know when and where a target is lased, which is useful, but not always needed. Don't need to hold down left click either, just point, click, and the target is lased for 15 seconds. Also, remember that the SOFLAM (GLTD in 0.75) acts by shooting a sticky projectile with a heat object on it so it can be locked on. Remember that when you lase targets.

In the early 0.7 betas (not sure if you can still do this), you could even lase helicopters as they fly past, and drop bombs on them :p. Did take a few tries for the projectile to stick to the chopper and not fall off though.

Most of the time if you're the commander, or the SL of the squad with the bomber in it, you don't need to bother with the "Sending laser target" and Close air support, since direct attack markers and VOIP can be used much more effectively.

This is important: The laser is actually a projectile, and thus has a flight time, very similar to the speed of a tank shell, so keep that in mind that it'll take 1-2 seconds to travel large distances before your pilot can lock on, so never reset the designation when they're <600m from target (even though it can still work).

Interestingly enough, I've tested it with my brother and it's actually possible to change targets after the bombs have been released, assuming they're from ~1000m [the max height for lock on]. He dropped it when it was aimed at the planes, and just after the drop I changed it to tanks and it hit the tanks. Apparently it's also possible for them to drop the bombs with no target, and set one just after it being dropped, and it'll still hit, but not as accurately in our experience.

QFT: Your computer is smart man. It tells you not to play the second worst PR map [burning Sands] (first is Wanda Shan).

QFT: if you dont get pissed off when you lose you dont care enough

That was ment for when the pilot isn't in your squad, but it still helps a lot for pilots if you have the time to place them both.

Love you long time gunner <3

I like to wait till im nearly done, then pull out and yell "COVERING FIRE!!!"

Ahhh. Im so glad I have a GF and she doesnt read these forums...

For the Air to Ground missiles and the bombs. For bombs you have to be at least 500m high, and at least 500m away from the target.

Or they disappear... Is it just me or does a rocket disappear if you get shot as you fire it off? Like AT shot at apc and it just disappears cause you got nailed taking the shot?
