I bloody well think so Might want to check your volume before you click this even with noise cancelling head phones shes still allot louder than the quite aircon sound currently in PR.

The people in tanks have ear muffs... The camera does not...

Can't hear anything in a tank other than the comms really once you're buttoned down and have your headset on.

Actually, the Abrahms has a Multi Fuel Gas Turbine engine (can run on Avgas or diesel in a pinch) and has the nickname "Whispering Death" because it is so quiet.

 

Of course quiet is a relative term (!) but I can tell you from personal experience that the M1A1D variant is a hell of a lot quieter than a Leopard I tank!

Very right bammo I seemed to have gotten confused some where along the lines the gas turbine engine which the abrams is equipped with is produced by Textron Lycoming a company with a well know past in aircraft manufacturing. Its not particularly surprising the Abram's have being given that name considering the type of sound they emit and how it would disperse over terrain and of course they rather interesting rubber tracks.

 

However my opinion still stands the current interior noise of not only the Abram but all of the armoured vehicles in PR is a little lacking. Even with noise cancelling head sets taken into account there still should be more ambient noise or radio chatter like you find in the planes.

I just went onto the website I post on with other ex-military to put it to people with experience on Challengers and other modern tanks around the planet.

why do you care because soon as you park up on a hill the driver jumps in to 3rd seat to lissen for close tanks and infantry

pretty sure they reduced the noise inside tanks for a couple of reasons,

 

1) because of the earmuff factor (the fact that you would be wearing earmuffs inside a tank)

 

2) because it was impossible to hear voip while in a tank before.

 

3) because you could hear troops running around outside (which was not realistic)

I'm just bouncing ideas and opinions around I might post the findings in the PR forums although I put NO STOCK what so ever in there forums. If I really wanted it changed I would badger Ancient and Chuc into mentioning it.

 

I'm just more curious as to what everyone thinks and to see if we can get some service men's opinion on the noise. I have being inside M113A1 before while there on the move and I can say there no quite ride but I wasn't wearing any ear protection at all and I was in the rear passenger compartment.

Has anyone seen that episode on Discovery Channel where they are refurbishing Abrams tanks and they all have kangaroos painted on them? Interesting program.

the energy required to put a shell through a tank armour is huge so untill lasers or electromagnetic cannons come out its going to still be noisy as hell

also no matter how noise damppering a engine is the low pitch will always be there to ruin your eardrums

*sigh* because the brand of tank was not the deciding factor here. Australia cannot really deploy the M1's outside of the mainland for both operational and logistical reasons.

 

But they can borrow the 10th Mechanised tanks that are already in the US.

 

This was a deal struck between the Coalition Gov and the US to promote closer cooperation without having to actually rely on US troops operating their tanks in close support of our guys.

i guess its so they can be trained in use of the Abram and be able to use it when there supporting the US
