Posted December 30, 200717 yr Anyone else watch this last night on SBS. I loved it. Loved the song by Gary Jules: "Mad World" - I thought it was Neil Young at first and then found to my horror it was a Tears For Fears cover (*barf*) but it was such a good song in that film... Donnie Darko - 5 Acid Blotters out of 5 for taking me back to the 80's when I was Darko's age and for some cool trippy surrealism. http://www.ic.sunysb.edu/clubs/movie/images/News/Donnie-axe-500.jpg Edited December 30, 200717 yr by mandatory05 "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
December 30, 200717 yr its a good film, and ive had this argument with lots of people (and they all disagree with me), i think its good but over rated.
December 30, 200717 yr Author maybe... I mean it's not like it was directed by a genius... but i loved it for it's "difference" if you know what I mean... "When you have to kill a man, it costs nothing to be polite." - Winston Churchill
December 30, 200717 yr Donnie Darko is a bloody great movie well the first release was atleast if you have being forced to see the "directors cut" I'm sorry for your loss cause its crap. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Signatures%20and%20Banners/VisP.png
December 30, 200717 yr Author I don't think it was the Director's Cut on telly last night... sometimes DC's are better... I know Bladerunner was much more dreamlike in the DC. The poster was just one of the best looking ones I found on Google Image search... I didn't really acknowledge the Director's Cut thing... December 30, 200717 yr Yes Donnie Darko was an awesome movie. Speaking of Blade Runner though, My brother picked up the newly released Blade Runner Final Cut edition. Im kinda tempted to watch but hesitant at the same time incase it ruins the D's/C experience for me. So far I've heard only good things about it though. http://users.on.net/hindes/bigdy/valour.gifhttp://img205.imageshack.us/img205/5224/operationcrownribbon02py7.jpg yeaaa booooy.
December 30, 200717 yr It's a great movie, though it needs multiple viewings to really get the most out of it. I highly recommend working your way through the website too, reveals a lot of useful details. http://www.donniedarkofilm.com/ http://users.on.net/hindes/thephotoshop_sig1.gif http://users.on.net/hindes/bigdy/squadleader.gifhttp://users.on.net/hindes/bigdy/stealth.gifhttp://users.on.net/hindes/bigdy/singapore.jpghttp://users.on.net/hindes/bigdy/valour.gifhttp://users.on.net/hindes/bigdy/spec_hat.gif
December 30, 200717 yr Original Tears for Fears version of Mad World is kewl. http://users.on.net/ericb/EricB_sig.png
December 30, 200717 yr I thought it was a great movie, not epic or anything, but still a great watch. Over rated? Yeah you could say that. There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/goodconduct.bmp http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmp http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/riflemanspecialist.bmp http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/infantryofficer.bmp http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/bullettime.bmp reportplayers@bigdgaming.net
December 30, 200717 yr Agreed, Top flick - i've got it on DVD http://www.users.on.net/~philc/tasmsig.php
December 30, 200717 yr the movie is considered a "Cult Classic" because of a couple of factors. for 1 it came out shortly after 9-11 and as we all know americans have a bad tendency to over-react. so they idea of plane parts crashing into darko's room made it a big no no. then the fact the movie has a big go at the "religious" society and private schools made it hated more by the general bible thumping american. also the whole phisics theorys and technical talk made this movie a favorite only with unreligious people and "intellectuals". also telling some1 "to go suck a F$#k" is just dam funny. so if u understand at least half of the movie it can be really interesting. Earn respect don't demand it.
December 30, 200717 yr I've finished watching Apocalypse now...redux....(damn near 4 hrs long...)...on the cult classic topic. I do like Donny Darko but...It just appeals to me,and reminds me of some of the S...t I pulled at school..(The night before School reopened after Christmas Holidays ,I and a couple of my nutty mates Padlocked the gates and did all the adminstration block door locks with super glue soaked matchsticks..... I've since developed a greater sense of respect for public property...But at the time it was damn funny...... Heres the Gary Jules track http://www.radioblogclub.com/open/153890/mad_world/Gary%20Jules%20-%20Mad%20World Edited December 30, 200717 yr by Gunner_downer http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee118/bahlye/bahlye007/mouse_zps73307fb2.gif
December 30, 200717 yr In my opinion it is an interesting movie that seems deeper than it actually is (unless I missed something). After watching it the first time SBS aired it a few years ago I went back through the plot of the film looking at the key events and came to the conclusion that the backbone of the story doesn't make sense. - SPOILER ALERT - keeping in mind that my memory is a bit fuzzy Why would the ghost of the kid in the rabbit costume put into motion the events that would lead to his own death? (ie. saving donny from the falling jet engine) Is it so that Donny can realise that the world is better off without him? The rabbit's action seems redundant given that Donny goes back and sacrifices himself anyway. I think that the movie is simply a mish-mash of spiritual and scientific themes. One of the reasons it has gained such cult status is because of the mystery surrounding it's possible meaning, though in my opinion if the creators did think of one it is most likely quite underwhelming. December 30, 200717 yr An intersting spin on things rogue, The only thing is............... I can't remember the bloody thing, I can only remember that I liked it There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die. http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/goodconduct.bmp http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmp http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/riflemanspecialist.bmp http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/infantryofficer.bmp http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/bullettime.bmp reportplayers@bigdgaming.net
December 30, 200717 yr You guys need to listen to Richard Kelly's commentary on the Extended Edition DVD. That, in conjuntion with the info from the website, explains everything. Kelly's actual plot once worked out isn't actually as good as many of the theories floating around, but it's nice to have the definitive story and fully understand and appreciate the movie. Take Rogue's theory - the rabbit that Donnie sees isn't actually the same person (from the future or other) as the guy in the rabbit costume; he's a Manipulated Living. It's quite hard to explain. December 30, 200717 yr Not having the DVD I just checked out wikipedia because Photo's mention of the Manipulated Living sparked my curiosity. You were right Photoshop, Kelly's true meaning for donn(IE) darko isn't as exciting or enlightening as the film would suggest (its a bit wacky infact). The movie does hint at an explaination with the mention of time travel. Since travelling back in time requires parallel or 'tangent' universes due to the grandfather paradox it does make sense, sort of. I'm still not sure why the tangent universe should have happened in the first place. It seems to be, from the Wiki explaination, a random, unexplained act which makes for a lame premise. *I just thought about it some more* According to the wiki explaination, Dead Frank instructs donnie to leave his room at the start of the movie thereby causing or continuing the 'tangent' universe which will destroy both universes. The wiki also states that it is dead frank's purpose to influence Donnie to allow himself to die by the jet engine. Assuming I'm not forgetting anything, Donnie would have died if Dead Frank didn't save him from the engine at the start of the movie. If Dead Frank's purpose was to get Donnie to die at the start of the movie then why did Frank save him? P.S. Before anyone says it, YES I have spent too much time thinking about that damn movie. December 30, 200717 yr Author It just appeals to me,and reminds me of some of the S...t I pulled at school..(The night before School reopened after Christmas Holidays ,I and a couple of my nutty mates Padlocked the gates and did all the adminstration block door locks with super glue soaked matchsticks..... You, sir, are a legend. The first time I saw the film I came home totally out of it and turned on the TV when his girlfriend got hit by the car... so I was so happy to finally see it all... I have read a lot of popular science and everything about time travel in the film makes sense. The engine fell off the plane *from a parallel universe*... and in the future of that near-identical universe where all the other poo happens... sorry about the Tears for Fears diss to the lone fan above but when I was in school they were considered to be, like, uber-gay. December 30, 200717 yr yeah Bladerunner DC is better, SPOILER --it allows for the viewer to interpret the main character (forget his name now, played by harrison ford) to be an android. This version keeps in the origami cranes throughout the film.... its a better version. @bahyle, i just watched apocalypse now for the first time about 4 weeks ago (not redux version)... dang was not what i expected. I was expecting a platoon/full metal jacket, but I got a deep human psyche exploration... what a good film, it created a dirty ends of the earth feeling... that jungle village that the bad guy was leading my reminds me of the Jonestown cult.
December 30, 200717 yr I got bored, Bladerunner is dope though. With all the hype I guess I expected more, oh and I fell asleep so I missed stuff. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0903/SirChuc/smokejumper3.jpg http://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/valorousunit.bmphttp://bigdgaming.net/images/added/awards/OperationCrownRibbon02.jpg Or as one of many thousands of Canadians have said, my guns are at the bottom of that lake.
