Ever like me though how asskickery it would be if you could crossbreed a tiger with a lion? Well thanks to my ignorance, I've been completely blind to the fact that Ligers (male lion + female tiger) do exist (mostly in zoos/private practices of course) and live long healthy lives.

 

Now anyone who's seen a healthy male lion, or even moreso a healthy male tiger can tell you they are big bastards that you would not want to piss off under any circumstances. Well male Ligers are so bloody big that they would kick chuck norris's arse. They most widely known liger, hercules, is currently over 900lbs , is 3 times the size of the tigers and lions and his head is twice the size of a siberian tigers.

The scary thing is, despite what the video says, Ligers can and apparently rarely have appeared in the wild, not because of some maniac letting loose a hybrid breed into the wild, but because the accidental breeding sometimes does happen. As many sources indicate though , the chances of it happening in our modern day in the wild is now almost none, as lions and tiger's areas no longer overlap as they once did. Also while the shear size and power of a Liger would no doubt ensure its safety if attacked, scientists believe it wouldn't fare well in hunting prey and would have to resort to scavenging other cat's kills.

 

Ligers aren't the only combination of big cats either, but they are the most notable because they don't inherit the growth inhibitor gene. Other hybrid big cat breeds include:

 

tigons (male tiger + female lion)

Leopon (male leopard + female lion.)

jaguar/lion crosses.
