Posted November 19, 200717 yr Geebon = Button bashing gamers who can start computers and maybe go as far as installing some ram but on the whole don't know allot about computers.. I'm looking for a good PC package to buy in the next month or 2 preferably from a Brisbane based pc store. Here are some of the packages that my local suppliers have advertised Umart Packages AMD Gamer Performance Pack Umart Gamer A System Umart Gamer B System QLD Computing Group http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Untitled-3.jpg HP http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/pc-4.jpg Edited November 19, 200717 yr by chambersAUS http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Signatures%20and%20Banners/VisP.png
November 19, 200717 yr WAIT thats my best advise - wait till after christmas the next gen of CPU's will be coming out from both Intel and AMD - might not be able to afford them but it will push the prices down on the older (current) ones also nvidia is releasing the 8900 series of video card and AMD (formally ATI) will also be releasing a new series. this is slated for late DEC to early Feb. http://www.madhouseau.com/misc/sigs/darthsig.jpg
November 19, 200717 yr Author I probably wont be buying till around that time period anyway I need to save the money / earn / gamble / given or steal it But I still need to design a good system to buy anyway. http://i197.photobucket.com/albums/aa188/VisOne_Photo/Signatures%20and%20Banners/VisP.png
November 19, 200717 yr Yeah, I'd wait aswell. Just for a little bit longer though cos with computers the waiting can be never ending. After xmas you should be able to pick up something with an E6850 and a 8800 GT for a decent price. Probably wouldn't go crazy over a quad core unless you have extra money to spend. You won't see a real performance increase in anything unless you want to start encoding stuff or doing some 3d art/animation. Here is a list of particularly awesome things: dogs sniping very spicy chilli cat claws on people (but still cool on cats)
November 19, 200717 yr Don't you dare buy a HP. Or i'll neck you. As for quad core, don't bother unless you plan to overclock it. Stick with a dual core as for the price they are better value and faster at stock speeds for general day to day apps + gaming. You'll only get better value for money if you overclock with the Q6600 vs a stock E6750. And as darth said, wait till the new year And then just post in the forums and we'll spec you up something and just pay them the fee to get it built up within your price range. Don't go for prebuilt systems as they generally skimp on some of the bits and you never really get a solid machine all round.
November 19, 200717 yr We'd need to know: - budget? - Do you do anything on the computer except PR? - XP or VISTA? They'll probably try and sell you VISTA. - bling case or understated/stylish one. New CPUs and graphics out Jan 08. Good time to buy then. Save your pennies! Where's the cheese? http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/2315/ubd4327.png
November 19, 200717 yr If your getting a computer package you'll be getting Vista. Microsoft won't supply XP as OEM nowadays. You can probably ask them to change it back to XP but don't be suprised if they charge you to do it cos it's a pain in the arse. Anyways, Vista would be the way to go if your going to get a new graphics card because of directX 10. November 19, 200717 yr Just as a comparison Gigabyte P35 DS3R $157 Intel Q6600 $325 2GB 800 Corsair $120 SATA DVD burner $45 500gb Sata HDD $155 Asus 8800 GTX 320mb $305 Thats $1107 so far. This is the same system as the $1999 system you found. So that means you have $892 to spend on a box, psu, keyboard, mouse and OS and screen carpe the living crap out of the diem http://www.kable.net.au/images/signature.jpg
November 19, 200717 yr Stuff about computers I would definitely say that the AMD performance pack was the best bang-for-buck system there, with the 22" and 8800GTS. http://www.umart.com.au/pro/products_listnew.phtml?id=10&id2=72&bid=2&sid=22005 The AMD/ATI HD3870 are out, but are topped in performance by the 8800GT at this point. Once the supply shortage for both of these is relieved, you should see prices of about 280 and 330 respectively. The 8800GTS refresh is also coming out which is based on the new G92 core and should surpass the 8800Ultra when overclocked. It'll have the dual-slot cooler so won't suffer the same heat issues as the 8800GT series. As far as I've heard Darth, there has been no confirmation for an 8900 series from nvidia yet... but it's probably on the table somewhere. I am personally going for quad core during Christmas, although I'm not sure if I'm going to buy the new penryn (45nm) or stick to the conroe Q6600. It all depends on the overclocking potential of the penryns and most importantly, the price of their budget quad model. A review showed 4.6ghz on air for the penryn but I believe it was from fudzilla which is always suspicious. http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee94/psyrus_uraya/awards-1.png QFT: Your computer is smart man. November 19, 200717 yr Yeah difficult decision to sit on over the next 2-3 months. Hopefully I don't cave in beforehand! Should be good once Intel and AMD's offerings are both on the table. If you had to buy one at the moment you simply cant go past the Q6600 if you plan to overclock. 3.6ghz on air, and thats with DDR800 limiting how far you can go and not DDR1066!
November 19, 200717 yr is there ddr3 ram coming out? and if there is when is it coming out? i remember someone else saying that u should get a motherboard thats compatible with ddr3 ram for when it comes.

I'm in the same boat man. I'll pay attention to this thread too as I'll be upgrading around the same time as well. Can you upgrade your older PC to save money? I'm just keeping my case PSU and Hard Drive, everthing else has to be upgraded MOBO - GPU - CPU and Ram but this should save me a bit if I get the parts on line and attempt to put it together myself...... I'm nervous but money is money. Edit/// I have an AMD CPU now and a 7600GT and my system seems really stable. Should I match the same up but newer or would I be better off getting an Intel CPU? I'm not planning on cheaping out on my mobo either.
