Are the Radeon 9600's any good?

What would they compare to brand wise?

Ive had this one for over a year now (as far as I can remember) and it was second hand when I was given it by my mate, who brought it new only a matter of months before giving it to me (he is the constant upgrade type).

Mid range? Higher end but getting old now? Lower end and getting older now (dear god please no :p )?

I've been using it since 2004, its definately worth the money I paid for it those years ago.

I have a 9700 GT/GTO 512mb and it's great... so i assume the 9600 must be pretty good

I think mine had some letters after it, xt, tx, something like that. Cant remember now and case is too hard to open ATM.

Ive got my 22inch widescreen coming shortly and wanted to make sure I was going to be able to make decent use of it.

Hopefully the rest of my old bucket system can keep up.. :animal_rooster:

Food chain of gfx cards, missing a few but indication of it anyway.

I'd see how it runs before grabbing something newer. You may need something with more grunt if you want to play other new games. Then maybe a card with good bang-for-buck like an 8600gt $200 or 8600GTS $300 or 8800GTS $400 (I'm saving for this), or one of the new ATI offerings (2600xt?).

Yeh I wouldn't bother buying a new graphics card now. Wait for the 9x series to come and either pick up a cheap second hand 8800GTS/GTX being offloaded by someone who wants a 9x or just buy a new 88x series card fairly cheap.

:)

+1, the 8600GT is pretty well priced (about the same as a 7600GT) but you can't really run DX10 games with it. Driver improvements might fix that but if you can, hold onto your 9600 til the nVida 9xxx ship and you can get a good deal on an 88xx.

mines a 9600 xt,was kinda high range back then(2-3 yrs...?),the mid range was the 9600st i think.

Not a bad card but ..sigh,getting old now.

Well I'm thinking Nvidia are going to bastards and milk the graphics market for some time to come as they have no rivals as of yet.

But if they dont need the money then they'll realese it before chrissy. My bet it they'll milk us.

Although AMD are starting to show some of their true colours soon. With some kick ass gaming rigs coming out soon after christmas i think nvidia are and intel are getting worried hence Intel are trying to buy theyre way into the graphics world too.

They were good in their day Jim but seriously if anyone tries to sell you one...RUN!

It will struggle to run a 22inch at native resolution.

If your after a new card post up your budget and what motherboard you have (I'm assuming its and AGP board) and I'm sure you'll get a a couple of suggestions.

If your mb is and AGP board then you can forget about all the DX10 cards as I'm pretty sure they're all PCIe.

If your not after the brand spankin wiz bang card then there's no need to wait for the newest thing coming

A couple of reasonable cards that are much better than the 9600

nVidia7600GS

ATI Raedon X800 series

all around the $100 mark and you will notice a good increase in frame rate and will run your new 22inch with ease.

carpe the living crap out of the diem

BF2 with directX 10 rendering? I think not... Also, I wouldn't advise anyone to get an 8500 to drive a 22" panel; it underperforms a 7600GS.

Radeon 9600 is the card im using ATM and have been since

2005....9550 is the minimum card for running BF2 so its

bottom of the range.

all my vid setting are off or low.

Was trying to avoid upgrading, dont mind if the 9600 struggles a bit, so long as it can do its job for a while with the 22inch.

My whole rig needs an upgrade, but that wont be happening for a while.

Not sure whether the current board is agp or sli or whatever, Ive never been too great with hardware and specs, never bothered to find out what my card is, as it fit at the time and that was all I was worried about.

If it struggles too much then Ill look at a temporary upgrade (thanks for the links tubby), but only if I absolutely have to, as Id rather put that money away for a complete upgrade further down the track ;)

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Another question for you.

ADSL modems.

Im ugrading from ADSL (512/128) to ADSL2+ very shortly.

Is there anything different between ADSL modems?

Is an ADSL modem just an ADSL modem or do some modems process faster than others? Reason I'm asking is, would my current modem cause a bottleneck with my new connection or am I right in assuming an ADSL modem is an ADSL modem regardless of connection speed??

I'd probably wait and do some research it's no point upgrading unless your gonna get a cheaper deal DL volume wise cause the speed may not be that much improved.

d/l speed will only increase if your leeching local servers, ping may not inprove at all, I just moved house and changed isp and at the mo my adsl 2 moden cant even connect so I'm using my adsl router and still have poor d/l speed of 9-13kps but I can play PR and get a ping of 22-28

If your existing modem is pretty old it probably won't support adsl+2

As I just found out when changing isp's.

Just ring your isp and they'll tell you if your modem will support it. ;)

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
