Simple issue this time, when I'm in game, my ping is erratic and can range from 20-500 and just jump around, causing massive slingshoting for me. Anyone know why this happens?

shutdown any background tasks - even your av whilst gaming

As Noddy said, if you have an AV shut it down. I use Avast and it has something called "streaming updates", which literally means it is streaming updates while I am in game even when I turn off protection and that makes my ping swing like a toilet door on curry night.

Not sure if this would actually cause high ping, but maybe check your game settings and see which connection setting you are using, LAN or Cable 256kbps or better, maybe it impacts ping depending on which one you have chosen, I have the cable one.

Yeah i've been getting random massive ping spikes. like 1k latency but for only about 1 second, every 5 minutes. It's enough to extremely annoying

It's not just PR though, somethings up with my isp i suspect.

Are you running stuff like spotify etc? The desktop client makes me lag, but the web browser doesn't.

I stay away from all anti-viruses these days, with the exception of windows security essentials http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download

Most of them seem awfully like viruses then protection. Ping spikes? Fps drops? Slow net? Haven't had any issues with MSE, it runs really low-key

My ping is a bit of the reverse if yours then, it'll start of good, but then it'll go really high and have random massive declines every 5 minutes or so and then go back up; but when there's no one on the server it's fine.

I use avast! Antivirus. it's pretty good, never had any issue with it, but I'll try disabling it next time. I don think I have anything else running in the background.

Update: still having this issue, tried changing connection settings and turning off background programs. Last night it was between a low of 28 and a high of 712. It is really quite frustrating.

Hrmmm! Want to give us a bit more info on what you are using/on? How are you connected wireless, ADSL2, cable, router, etc.? What firewall are you using?

Have a run of this: http://n3.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/ and see what it throws up. I know I get a lovely amount of lag/ping spike gaming from:

Network buffer measurements (?): Uplink 1700 ms, Downlink 72 ms –

We estimate your uplink as having 1700 ms of buffering. This is quite high, and you may experience substantial disruption to your network performance when performing interactive tasks such as web-surfing while simultaneously conducting large uploads. With such a buffer, real-time applications such as games or audio chat can work quite poorly when conducting large uploads at the same time.

BUT I don't think that would be causing you such high ping spikes! ;)
