Any of you travellers out there got them ? Or any you could recommend ? Are they better than HID's ?

Have no idea about LED driving lights apart from what's on YouTube...

Have had IPF's on all my vehicles in the past.

Connecting to IP with Password TBA and it's not letting me through. Done something wrong?

People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don't believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and, if they can't find them, make them. - George Bernard Shaw

Yeah LED light bars all the way.

Mate has HID spotties and I swear you can feel the burn standing right in front of them. They're really nice.

MTB lights are all LED now and I can tell you that even in such a small package you'd be absolutely blown away on how much light they can deliver. So I imagine the step up to something on a ute would be even greater.

The biggest difference between LED and HID is light output over range.

HID's have a massive projection range. The problems they face are short range dissipation (the lenses on the light can't get as good coverage up close compared to LED), vibration and constant on/off destroys life of the globes. HID's draw a bit when starting (~6-8A) and stuff all once they've burnt on (~1.5-2A). Replaceable globes.

LED's have a moderate projection range. The benefit of LED over HID is close range dissipation. The light output has an awesome coverage of the area they work in but the range isn't there compared to HID. Vibration and on/off switching doesn't seem to worry them either. LED lifespans of 10,000 hours are a fantasy though. At the moment we are getting about 2-2.5k hours before 50% of the LED's are shot and the light is rooted. Warranty claims are a pain in the arse as well. It's always water or some bs excuse to get out of payment.

It comes back to what you want to use them for mate. Highway driving, HID all the way. Off road, lots of dirt roads/corrugations etc go LED.

AintWar - nice car mate. Mine is the last of the '60's but dirtier than yours.

I love the old girl :) if you want to see the story http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=187&t=117955 , and there should be some talk on the LEDs , at the 4wdaction site .

Aint war nice job on the reco mate.

Ok so after almost pulling the remainder of my thinning hair out I have come up with the new IPF 900's HID with built in ballast and a pair of 4/6 inch light bars which should give me the best of both worlds ?

Nuffy I'll be do a fair bit of both dirt and black top so would this be ok ?

Yeah mate, the IPF's are a good light. I've fitted them to a few cars now and everyone seems happy with them. The cars I've fitted them to have only done black top and beach, no real corrugations and they've been going strong for probably 18 months now.

I think you'll be pleased with the light you get out of them.

The only other thing to watch with HID lights is the brightness of the light output. If you drive long distances in the dark they have the potential to fatigue your eyes. If I recall correctly 4300k globes are as close to daylight as you can get which doesn't really worry your eyes. Any higher than that and you find your eyes will fatigue faster due to the intensity of light. Just something to keep in mind.

yup, afaik the brightness is a factor on its own, but the K value is to do with the colour of the light itself.

I picked up these today, A stock agent mate of mine has them on his 200 series and he lives on the road pretty much, swears by them. Apparently they are Queensland's equivalent to light-force. Reasonably priced so will see how they go.
