Hi guys, been a while since i logged on to PR (and only been lurking here also) due to work work and more work.

 

But i am looking to get back in the swing and i need a new monitor.

Currently running an old asus 22 inch and l am thinking of something around the 27 mark.

 

Sys is Core i7 3820 - GTX 660 OC 2GB

I am looking at the upgrade mainly for gaming, but i also use it for photo editing and some video stuff

 

 

What can you recommend?

3d?

i read somewhere that only certain monitors are compatible with nvidia 3d

is this an issue?

is 3d even worth it?

 

120/144 hz ?

display port ?

In my opinion, 27in is too big for gaming, i tried one out, 27in asus, and it felt way too big.

 

There's not many 24in 120hz monitors around. The one i see a lot of people talk about is the BenQ one ->

It supports 3d, and receives great reviews on whirlpool..

 

2ms, 120Hz, that's what i would be getting if i had the money and was looking to upgrade.

I'm running a singular 23" samsung monitor never had any issues with it since I got it in 2011.

im running a samsung 23in monitor at 120hz

 

i can play games in 3d, but dont most of the time, it just gets hard on the eyes after an hour or so i say its just not worth it

 

I would not go bigger than 23in just no need when gamimg

 

im running i7 3770 at 4.1 ghz and a gtx 580 SOC

my advice is go for LED back lighting only - yes it will cost more but will use less power and will run cooler

Trouble is I will be asked "Whats wrong with the 4 screens (Laptop and 3 others..) you have to play with atm, and didn't you want a new ssd video thing anyway? .

(Wifey no speak tech talk her eyes just glaze over... , even though shes on a PC all day at work..)

 

And she won't let me steal the 40" Samsung Smart TV out of the Lounge..

 

So yeah if you want something good go the BQ, but prices will drop abit after Christmas I suspect.

Is the 120hz (assuming you have it) good, i still remember how good CRT screens looked cranked up but do LCD screen benefit in the same way/amount?

Hey man,I have a BenqV242OH 24" and it's awesome..Had it approx 18 months now and Love it.

Regarding your 3D querie,my computer guy who I get my parts from was of the opinion that the Nvidia 3D glasses are still a way to go in terms of the technology itself...Hence why I didn't get them myself.

I am sure others will offer differing opinions on this.But based on the available data,I would prefer to hold on till something better comes out.

I would have literally bought the glasses then and there had he told me they were great.

I guess I'm trying to convey the idea that perhaps the Nvidia technology regarding 3D glasses is somewhat premature.

Would be interested in seeing what others think or have experienced regarding 3D glasses.

I have a matching pair of 22" AOC monitors from circa 2007 and they work fine. Upgrading now I think they only thing I would change is that I would go for LED backlighting.

3 x samsung 23" with nvidia 3d kit ansd 2 x 570's.

 

120hz. pretty sure I wouldn't notice the difference if I turned it on/off. some geeks may notice the difference, but I don't think I could tell. I just have it on cause I don't run 3d most of the time.

 

3D. I remember asking the same questions when I first purchased. Back then very few people had 3d, so I just bit the bullet and dived in. Is absolutey awesome the first time you use it. Used it on BFBC2, used it on BF3 for causal lol plays. It is a real visual feast. It's like the first time you went and saw Avatar at the movies. Long term play, I never really use it. Just throw it on every now and then to go wow, 3d is cool.

So in short I wouldn't use it as the basis of a decision for a monitor. If the 3d monitor is the same price or an extra $50, I would say go for it. Hell $50 is a small outlay, even if you only play the odd game ocasionally in 3D. You allready have a heafty nvidia card and a top system, so it seems a bit of a waste not to not go 3D. So if it was me I would get the 3d monitor.

 

But then, I think 3 monitors is even more of a wow factor than the 3d, and is long term usefull/playable. It really gives you imersion. I think 3 x smaller monitors are better than 1 bigger one. But it's like anything, you get used to it. Prob is u have a nvidia card so u will need a second to go surround. Where as eyefitinty you only need the one card.

 

So if you can beg/borrow/steal, my first option would be buy another gfx card, and get 2 more monitors of whatever you allready have (which should be cheap asuming you have an older model).

 

If you end up going 3d monitor I could post u my nvidia kit to give it a trial before you forked out for the $150-$200 for the 3d kit to see if you really want it.

Nah I did have the 40inch playing PR when i lived in Brokenhill but since moving to melbourne it doesn't seem to work on PR anymore but works on every other game, Planetside 2 is awsome with the 40inch at max ingame settings but starts to hurt your Eyes after a while, PR just crashes on startup with the 40inch but i think because its set to 1920x1080 60hz, I think i had to run lower for it to work, I play PR on an Asus 24inch everything High and 8x antiliasing and 1920x1080

 

Planetside2 i run 1920x1080 and everything high exept Fog shadows off and motion blur off and the 40inch runs fine at that,
