Now the Blackhawk has been improved in several ways (7 man capacity, increased speed), it is too valuable of an asset to be left unattended while a squad is attacking a base. In a large map like Jabal, where the bases are quite far from each other, it is of paramount importance to keep the Blackhawk alive so troops can be shuttled to their destinations.
The most efficient way of using the Blackhawk is outlined below:
- An experienced pilot should create a one man Squad titled 'HELI PILOT' or something equivalent. It's a good idea to lock the squad, as Blackhawks can carry 1 Pilot + 6 man squad. There is, unfortunately, no room for a co-pilot.
- Pilot should take attacking squads to destinations. If no squads need transport, then take lone soldiers who spawn on the carrier to the rest of their squad.
- Inserting directly into an enemy base is suicide. Drop off your men at least 100m away so they can put down a rally point and flank the enemy.
- It is important to know good insertion points, for example, an area hidden behind a hill. With some practice, you can insert troops without being seen at all by the enemy. Also, look out for water - it allows you to drop off men without actually landing the chopper.
- The Pilot should never get out of the chopper. Only land it for extended periods of time on the carrier. Anywhere else - quick insert/pickup. Then leave. FAST.
- Having a competent commander is a huge, huge advantage. We rely on commanders for team cohesion. He can take the responsibility of co-ordinating drop-offs and asking squads if they need a pick-up.
I've already tried going dedicated pilot, and it's quite fun. You won't get many points for it - but you'll benefit your team significantly - which is what PR is all about really. If you want to go dedicated pilot, you should be an experienced pilot and you should know the PR maps quite well. Remember, Little Birds are for recon, and Blackhawks are for transporting entire squads - so keep them alive
HOW TO PRACTICE FLYING:
a) Watch the tutorial on how to fly in PR
Part 1
Part 2
b)Set up a local area network game. Good blackhawk maps are Jabal, Gulf of Oman and Muttrah.
c)Go to the console and type 'sv.numPlayersNeededToStart 1' If that doesn't work, try 'svnum.PlayersNeededToStart 1'
d)Create a squad, request an pilot kit by pressing T.
e)Experiment with taking off, flying, hovering and landing.
