Posted June 18, 201212 yr Australia is finally set to join the rest of the developed world and officially adopt an adults-only category for video games. Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Justice Jason Clare has today announced that an R18+ category for video games has at last become a reality. The legislation passed the Senate without amendment earlier this evening. “These are important reforms over 10 years in the making,” said Mr. Clare. "The R 18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play, and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material. "The reforms also mean that adults are able to choose what games they play within the bounds of the law." The States and Territories will pass their own complementary legislation and the national scheme will commence on January 1 next year. About time.

June 19, 201212 yr Doesn't this mean that each state has to legalise it still? I'm not exactly sure how it works but our Constitution leaves classification powers with the Commonwealth. I believe, according to this that the "complimentary (state) legislation" would be with regard to state-specific issues on distribution and regulation of material however the whole of Australia will have the same classification laws (eg: PG, M, MA, R18, RC). Any discrepancies between the State and Commonwealth should also be found (and fixed) when the implementation of this "New National Classification Scheme" is complete, however the Commonwealth will pretty much always have the last say on the topic of classification Inq. June 19, 201212 yr Isn't this just like, all games that were previously rated MA (so that they could release in Australia) are going to be rated R18+, and violent games are still going to have a tough time getting released.
June 19, 201212 yr The state governments will have to amend their respective pieces of law to reflect the changes by the commonwealth so the new classification is enforceable in their respective states.

June 21, 201212 yr Would this mean that the classification board will reasses older titles that were once banned/ censored such as L4D2? Time to rise to the occasion
June 22, 201212 yr I'm fairly sure that depends on whether the games themselves are resubmitted by their publishers. DON'T YOU CLUCK WITH ME, BUDDY! ---------------------- After that night I started peeing out the window to avoid going down the hallway when it was dark.
