Hi guys my sytems been cutting out. as im sure its to do with my bios setting to prevent any damage. but my cpus sitting on 60 now idle. an when i open a page etc it spikes to 70-73 now iv wiped all the heatsink off i do think abit has slipped itself under the top of the cpu though =/ i can see a tiny smidgen but yea -.- could that be the issue. not my cpu fan is touchy too an needs to be fiddled with a fair bit to get it locked into the motherboard. my cpus a dual core 2.4 ghz. any help would be a life saver. im pretty sure i got this sussed. but any input before i go through with this would be appreciated.

My CPU sits at 60 while idling - stock cooler on a E8400. What happens if you run it full bore? Try something like superPi and run it for a few minutes - see how hot it gets then?

 

As it stands I wouldn't consider that overheating.

 

Thanks for making me think about it though - my GPU was running a bit hot (82). The fan had clogged with crap. :hi:

There must be a thin layer of thermal paste between the cpu and the heatsink .

60 at idle is a little high for a Core duo.

very hot would be 90 - to hot would be 98-100 which i think is somewhere near the tjmax.

 

take heatsink and fan off - clean for dust bunnies - reapply a very small amount of THC to the clean heatsink. (cpu must also me clean)

 

my wifes i7 2600k (4532mhz) run of the mill desktop idles around 46-50 (highest core temp #3) when browsing, its in a standard QLD room temp room using stock cooler.

yea my mate did mine the other day and put too much on =/. i only found out before -.- but opening internet explorer an maybe 3 tabs spikes it to 74 +

an it used to average around 42-44 idle.... i will check my bios as the cut off could be low but it still has jumped up the temp a fair bit. note i will clean it out an see how it goes a apply a small dot a heat skink and see if that fixes it. will post back with the outcome

Personal preference for cleaning cpu and heatsink is zippo lighter fluid. Few drops to disolve the TIM then cotton bud off . Few more to move the tinting. Good long squirt at the inverted CPU will clear any left contaminants.

Then once dry (5 min) follow the guides Samee linked to .

Hey Fallen, does that lighter fluid leave much residue when it evaporates? I've heard of Isopropyl Alcohol being used to clean computers, but not Zippo Fluid.

Lighter fluid is a pretty pure petrochemical and 99.99% of it will evaporate. Isopropal is good for a final clean ( I use both ) but it doesn't dissolve the carrier fluid in modern TIM . If the cleaning solvent wont dissolve the gunk left on the cpu and heatsink it wont float the silver , silicon or ceramic particles off the surface at a microscopic level.

Think of a greasy dinner plate under the cold water tap, doesnt move much.

With lighter fluid think hot soapy water on same plate.

Whatever your washing should dry without any residue, if it doesn't its not clean so have another go.

Acetone would be my cleaner of choice. No telling what is floating around in different brands of lighterfluid.

 

Wipe the surface clear with a paper towel - then clean both surfaces with Acetone/Isoproypl-Alcohol on a q-tip. Repeat until q-tip is clean then leave to dry.

Don't touch the surfaces with anything other than thermal paste after that.

 

Now that I think about it - lighter fluid should work fine too. White spirits is a household equivalent to lighterfluid if you don't have any floating around.

well i followed the steps above. an changed some bios settings. its idle on 50 now rough. but is still spiking. also i cleaned out the heatsink an fan for the cpu also an the exterior fans. hmmm hopefully it'll hold out till i can get my new cpu an fan . yes now is the time to start linking me some new fans that youd recommend. also heatsinks to.

also in regards to my ram i have 6gb however 4gb is corsaid dominator ram an there two 1 gb sticks in my other two slots.

i just checked cpu - z an this is what it says. ( iv attached 2 screens)

would it be worth keeping the 6gb or going back to 4 for the extra speed from the corsair ram?

they both run at 800mhz well they are supposed to...

i think i need to fine tune some things =/.

With mixed sets of RAM in banks the stick in first slot of first bank will set the voltage and speed of the remaining sticks.

Just be careful your not overvolting or clocking the other set.

Don't think WD40 would evaporate with no trace, which is why I asked about Zippo fluid in the first place

Oh, I was just kidding about WD40. Seems that cleaner that BlackMagickz had was the expensive equivalent of WD40.

 

They used to clean circuitboards with bucketloads of WD40 - nowdays people buy gear quicker than a circuitboard gets covered in crap.

the only conclusion i can come to is A.) its been over used trying to keep up with the gts450 as i run most games rather high. B) i bought the cpu off trade me an it was originally used in a server along with the mobo so i don't know what he might have done in regards to possibly overclocking the cpu aas an example. but now im finding the cpu temp to just be uneasy its idle on 47-50 now so has dropped. but a bit of activity eg opening a tab on internet explorer it jumps to 60 then climbs upto 7-73 -.-

also i cleaned up the old paste an re applied a lil bit. an thoroughly cleaned the cpu fan an heatsink with the vacuum. (of course i removed it an done it on the table haha)

 

what do yous reckon? B.)?

Could it be like a power supply problem? Drawing to much current when it gets used?

It's weird that just doing simple stuff like opening IE is causing it to jump so much - it's not exactly an intensive program...

One thing I thought of - have you checked that your CPU fan hasn't just...stopped?

nope my cpu fans fine. well i think its my power supply tbh. as when i boot it up for instance it'll simply cut out all together. then i'll hit it on again an it boots up fine. i have checked all my connections and what not and its all looking good. so second hand psu 500w the problem? what do yous think a this? would that mean my cpu's spiking at times an eg running at 80 + now when gaming due to an issue with the psu?. as i was gaming last night some bf3 and darkness II an it wa over 80 but wasnt cutting out or shutting down. and it was running really well too. hmmm hope ya's have some insight on this. something tells me it is my psu tho =/

I cant fathom a situation that a bad power supply would effect CPU temp spikes.

 

Bad PSU = random crashes.

Your thermal probe is misreporting the actual temp (bios update after googling you board for similar problems) or

Your heatsink isnt mounted properly or

Your cpu has not enough / to much TIM or

Your fan isnt running at full/correct speed or

Youve over volted your CPU and dont know it (its not overclocked is it ? ) or Your PC is possessed by the dead spirit of an angry young girl used in secret psychic experiments.

Not going to be the PSU (you may have a bad PSU but it wont show as this problem.

 

YOu still havent told us what your current CPU is that is having these issues ???

 

What software are you using to measure you CPU temps ?

im using real temp to view temperature of cpu. and the model is Intel core 2 duo E6600 2.4ghz

 

note thos two attachments have different voltages. its an idea on the voltage spiking... an other cpu info

..... come on guys lol.

if it is the voltage of the cpu what would be the best to manually set it at. me and voltages have never understood eachother... -.-

personally I would power it down, pull the ac cord and then remove the lil silver battery from the MB . CAREFULLY there may be a release tab at the bottom, if not remove carefully so you don't break the solder on the back of the MB. , count to 42.

Plug AC cord back in and power up then let it load the Bios defaults.

 

That iirc * should restore the bios to default and anything that was done to the Bios settings and voltages will be gone.

Your boot settings will remain ..ie " boot from whatever first device is "
