Hi - does anyone know how to re-enable all my user privileges.

I had a sasser infection which f**ked my windows xp pro badly but I

have been fighting it back into state. However - most of the user things like right-click on the desktop/properties are disabled "due to restriction on this computer" and similarly right clicking on My Computer is blocked.

 

How can I re-enable all of this ? There are no simple solutions online. I have been looking through the group policy editor gpedit.msc thingymajig but I am getting stressed out trying to fix this.

 

can't find my Control Panel... either

Looks like a format job to me. Mind you that's my fix every time I got a virus I couldn't work out. This reminds me, I need to make some back ups as I've not done it in awhile.

 

How did you get said virus?

my fault - i downloaded a bodgy file on emule and although it scanned safely with my virus scanner - it still installed the bloody virus... I seem to be getting around the problems though...

There's your first mistake there.

 

D/L stuff using torrents. eMule, eDonkey and Limewire has all kinds of spyware/virus crap.

 

If you join a private torrent site you'll get the stuff heaps faster and you'll have no worries with any of the virus crap.

 

Go here and D/L uTorrent (really small program) and install it.

 

http://www.utorrent.com/

 

Then go to a torrent search engine like

http://www.torrentspy.com

http://www.isohunt.com

 

and do a search for whatever you want then d/l the tracker file and bobs your uncle.

 

no need to worry about getting rubbish on your computer.

 

well, much less of a worry anyway with a public tracker and no worry with a private one.

Not once have I got a virus from using torrents, but when I used to use those p2p sharing programs, well it was pretty much a format every 2nd week due to viruses.

I hate formatting, especially ow that I have stuff on here I don't want to lose. I am due for a spring clean though. Right down to a dismantle and dust.

Look under User Config/Admin Templates/Group Policy

 

That should put you in the right place to work out what went wrong. Though its been a while since I got my IT Admin wang on.

Oh also just though try here too.

User configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Windows Explore

 

Just click on the thingys and it tells you what each do. I might have a quick google and see if there is a quick way to turn the policies off for you. Are you logged in as an admin account?

 

EDIT - This may help you turn it off.

Read through To use the group policy editor, follow these steps:

Number 4. looks about where you may want to follow from. Just reverse it and it should be ok.

2 reinstalls, a few hours on microsoft knowledge base and trawling the internet for advice, a packet of cigarettes and several dozen cups of coffee later, it's fixed

Tips for future run 4 different virus programs 2 spyware and pc doctor and bobs your uncle...

 

I dont run any virus protection or spyware in my task bar but I load up all 5 programs nortons, avg, adaware, pc doctor and node 32 or what ever its called and scan scan scan once a fortnight never had any probs

 

In re to d/ling always suss the file size and type and scan first before opening

Windows Defender + NOD32 + Outpost Firewall(Dont really leave this on since ive got the firewall setup on my ADSL modem)

Though i dont really use emule,Limewire ect that much. Usenet & Private BT trackers ftw

 

Edit: Also it’s wise to have Windows installed on another partition , that way if you reinstall you only lose some programs, games & don’t have to dick around with backing up all your other "important" files

I used to be like that, but now i know how to keep XP ticking along nicely (Even with the amount of crap i installed/uninstalled).

 

Although once i reach the 3 year mark i think it will be time for a reinstall.

bejesus... Do you have an image or something? I couldn't withstand the pain of a full install every 4 months.

No I just don't have many programs installed...its only when I get too many on there its about time for a format. Keeps everything running smoothly.

 

I have a folder on one of my hdd's with everything I need to install in it, so it takes about 40minutes once I've installed to have everything updated and running properly

It would probably take you 15-20 if you had a ghost image.

That would require me making said ghost image and putting the effort in now. While I would benefit in the long run, I just can't be bothered
