Posted December 10, 201113 yr Hey fellas, my Xbox360 which I have had since 2006 or whenever it was when they were first released has finally decided to pack it up and give me '3 red rings', I determined the fault was in the actual console, and Microsoft reccomended I send it to them for repair, however, I did a bit a looking around and found it might cost me $150 or more to send the thing away and get it back, and I don't get the bill until AFTER they return it. Now that pricing seems absurd. So, I also found that I can send the Xbox360 to some places around Aust and get it repaired for a fraction of the price ($100 or less) and thought this might be a better venture. However, I am still not sold on getting it repair, as what if it is just getting old and packs it in again 12 months down the track? That's $200 odd spent and still the same old Xbox. So, I figured, why not buy a new one? And thus, I ask, does anyone have any idea where I would be able to look to get a cheap deal on an Xbox360 at this time of year? I have done a fair bit of catalogue etc reading and online searching, but it never hurts to ask as someone could have heard of a deal that I missed! Finally, what is the future looking like with respects to new consoles? Any news on that front? Might it be better to just repair the 360 and wait for a new console release if its only 1-2 years away? TL;DR: Xbox360 broken (6 years old), do I repair with risk of it breaking again, or replace with new 250GB 'Slim' version? (heard they are also quieter if you load discs onto HDD hence 250) http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss187/Chanvlan/new_kit.jpg yeah but this is the internet' date=' you have to expect the unexpected or else you'll get caught out by things you should've expected but didn't. December 10, 201113 yr No the red rings are a hardware problem i had the same thing sent it to Microsoft (With my warranty) and the fixed it all up that was about 4 years ago and i haven't gotten a red ring since. The problem which causes it is like the cooling system which is very poorly made and this causes the xbox to overheat ect, sending it off they repair this problem so it doesn't overheat and cause the problem again. Hope this helps, Cheers [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "Who Dares Wins"

Also, I understand what the issue is, as I said 'console related' I just didn't want to really go into specifics http://i574.photobucket.com/albums/ss187/Chanvlan/new_kit.jpg yeah but this is the internet' date=' you have to expect the unexpected or else you'll get caught out by things you should've expected but didn't. December 10, 201113 yr Do the old oven trick, then mod the xbox case, locate a spot cut a big arse hole in it and wire a pc fan onto it.. December 10, 201113 yr Do you have much DLC? This may have changed in the last title update, but last I read the 360 uses 2 methods to verify legit DLC. The first is if HDD you're using is connected to the same console as when the DLC was activated, and secondly it checks if you're connected to XBL. You need to pass one of those checks in order for any DLC to show up. So what this means to you is that if you buy a new one then you'll need to be online in order to use any DLC you might have, but if you repair the old one, you can use it offline. So yeah, if you're like me and have zillions of guitar hero songs but don't have your 360 online, repair the old one. Otherwise I'd go a more reliable newer one with HDMI + bigger hdd. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y122/sabretron/auxbkt.png
December 10, 201113 yr the thing with the new slims is they can still get the problem but they took out the red lights so youll never see a "red ring of death" your xbox will just be an epic paperweight. when i was managing eb games stores i used to get people coming in with the same overheating problem as the old ones but minus the red ring. microsoft love solving problems "their way" i was sitting in a shopping mall up-stairs eating area by myself crying while trying to eat this ****, people were looking...it was embarrasing Moonbuggy relives the horror of eating Bulgarian KFC
December 10, 201113 yr The $150 includes another year or 2 of warranty from Microsoft. anyways, it is as old as you say it is and you really don't mind getting it replaced for a faction of the price form somewhere else, do it, there's nothing Microsoft can do about it, but i would do allot of research into it before and make sure the guy is trustworthily. Really if you got the cash buy a new one, they are allot better. When my finally dies I will get one. How DLC works, go to the memory of the HDD and click on transfer all licensees. ^ i am let to test that myself, but my bro says it works fine. you can only do that a few times a year i believe. December 13, 201113 yr Chanvlan, I just sent in my Xbox for a repair last week. Cost me $100 and they just completely replace the console. Came back in under 5 days, very quick and easy. Basically jump onto the Microsoft website and look for console repair (you need to register it first which is extremely easy, all online). You 'book' a repair online and pay for it (~$100), You box it at your post office and send it. You don't need to pay for the postage. Fixing 3RRD is very difficult and you have the potential to screw it up....badly. My console had a simple overheating problem, but I figured 100 bucks for a new console was worth it. Your console is pre 2006 so your warranty is long gone, but IMO its much easier just to send it in. Look, you could get it repaired somewhere cheaper but knowing an Xbox, it will most likely break again, especially since yours is a very very old 2006 model. Any models older than 2007 are prone to all sorts of issues. Just send it in and replace it mate. (You dont lose any game data, you take the HDD off before you send it) Let's go, let's go overground Take your head out of the mud baby
