Slavery the Game isn't a game -- at least, we really hope it's not -- but it is a wonderful example of just how warped the Internet's sense of humor and decency is. Slavery the Game's website is horrifyingly legit at first glance, boasting a trailer, contact information, share buttons, the insignia for Xbox 360, PS3, PC and an ESRB rating of AO (Adults Only).

These are lined up at the bottom of the site, right next to the overwhelming sense of relief we felt when we realized neither 360 nor PS3 release AO titles. Further, the ESRB doesn't list a rating for anything called Slavery the Game and the proposed developer, Javelin Reds Gaming, doesn't exist. One YouTube version of the trailer credits The Creative Assembly with making Slavery the Game, but it isn't mentioned anywhere on The Creative Assembly's site. We've contacted The Creative Assembly for clarification. [update: The Creative Assembly has clarified it has nothing to do with this project.]

We do wonder, if Slavery the Game isn't a game (and it's not; notice the lack of italics here), does it have a larger goal, or is this it; a mysterious website with a gruesome reminder that society can be a more powerful force than individual morality? We thought we already had one of those one of those..

Definitely Dutch humour.

They have a Christmas parade that is more than messed up. It's Santa and his slaves. People dress up as black people like they are out of Tom and Jerry giving everyone cookies.

Those episodes are banned I think now.

What you are referring to is Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet (Santa Claus and Black Peter).

its actually Saint Nicholas (patron saint of children, sailors, and the city of Amsterdam) and generally arrives on a steam boat (supposedly arriving from Spain)

Black Pete is a reference to "The Devil" that Santa made his slave ( not a black person ), bad kids were given a lump of coal and good kids were given lollies by Black Piet. (people dress up as Black Piet in parades - which would be seen by most from the US as a big no no given their history)

as a "Dutchman" we were always warned to be good or be afraid Black Pete would smack our bums with a chimney sweep brush or given a lump of coal, on the 5th of December.

every nationality has their own "Santa" type role - we teach our kids that the elves make the toys - are they not slaves of Santa ?

my point is in this day and age people take things a little to literally for fear of being sued or being politically correct.

I Honestly think its childish to start some Firestorm just by faking a game creation whoever made this need's some serious Counciling

They were actually trying to make a point and educate people about slavery:

Street interviews show that the Dutch are not fully aware of their national history considering slavery. Also, they lack of knowledge about the current worldwide status quo on the topic. Therefore the aim of the viral was to call attention to the European share in the worldwide history of slavery. Secondly, to emphasize that slavery still exists today. Around the world, about 27 million people are exploited as slaves. Even in countries like The Netherlands modern slavery still subsists.

we used to have slaves back in NZ

then the white people came

but seriously every now and again slaves are being found in modern countrys

also campaigns like this is to ask people to watch what they buy as that shirt (or other items) you are wearing could have easily been made by slave labour or close to it

idiots are hardcoded
It's quite clever really... Afterall the joke's on you if you thought it was serious (a nailed baseball bat as a weapon in the 18th century, lol!). Jerrif nailed it :p

+1 bkt. Don't think they had the intention to offend or had any actual racist motive.

Where to mate' It's been a while...

there is a ripper of a doco called "the end/or an end of poverty"

it does a solid condensed version of slavery n how the system still florishes/functions today, although slavery has shifted to a binding of debt imposed on the people of nations that have signed IMF or world bank loans, n all the corruption that follows as that money gets filtered. A book called "Confessions of an Economic Hitman" covers similar ground, they are both well worth a look

although slavery has shifted to a binding of debt imposed on the people of nations that have signed IMF or world bank loans

i recall reading an article a while back that pointed out the huge growth in the Vietnam economy compared to Argentina, Chile, Mexico (iirc) etc and how their economies all followed plans laid out for them by the IMF in order to get WB loans etc (basically sell all Gov't utils to private industry, deregulate markets etc) and as such any wealth they did have remaining quickly flowed out of the countries and into 'Western' countries. The reason Vietnam was doing so well was because they refused to follow the IMF guidelines so the majority of the wealth was kept in their country to help build it up. This was around 2000 tho and i haven't seen anything else relating to that since then.

Cheers McD, thats the stuff, that doco, An end of Poverty (2008)focuses on exactly that.

They painted themselves black like black people because that is what a slave looked like. While it is said to be the devil the image they paint themselves is born out of the massive involvement the Dutch had in slavery.

In fact the Dutch are attributed to bringing the first slaves to America landing in New Amsterdam currently known as New York City.

I thought the parade was hilarious and it shouldn't ever change but let's call a spade a spade.

http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/jimcrow.jpg

Look familiar? That cartoon was drawn around the same time that Zwarte Piet as he is now came into existence. This is an American cartoon and this is how the world saw black people at that time.

The Netherlands finally abolished slavery on 1 July 1863. To compensate, slave owners received 300 guilders per freed slave from the Dutch government. Moreover, freed slaves in Suriname were required to work for their former owner for ten years (so effectively they remained slaves until 1873).

Don't get me wrong I loved living in The Netherlands. Great time and lovely not politically correct people.

It's one of the things I liked about the Dutch. They really don't give a **** what people think and anything is fair game for teasing.

Oh and mini skirts, bicycles and mobile phones; at one time. :D

:)

As stated earlier the black slave-characters that accompanied Saint Nicholas originally symbolised the devil, a ‘joker’ who was submissive, frightening and disobedient at once. At this point there were no 'racial' references to people of African descent. Although the Mores were also associated with the devil, the blackness of the children did not refer to them but to the devil-figure. In other words; this color bias preceded the racial-bias. When Saint Nicholas re-appeared at the end of the 18th century after being banned, he returned alone, without Black Peter.

In the 19th century the black devil returns, this time re-invented as a servant of Moorish descent. He wears the costume of the child-slaves that work in Europe at that time, the pages. Carrying a large bag and his rod he threatens to take children that behaved bad. In an era of slavery and colonialism the racial ideas of that time were translated onto this figure.
