Im moving out of home and will be leaving my gaming Desktop computer behind.

 

Im after a laptop (not only for ease of moving, but for music, watching movies in bed and playing new high end games).

 

Ive NEVER bought a laptop, and while I could spec a new desktop easily I have no idea to even start (with stores/websites) for a laptop....

 

 

Only requirement is that I would rather avoid alienware, laptops are overpriced to begin with - and thats just making it worse.

 

Budget would be 1.5-2k.

ooh 1500 to 2k... not to sure how "high end" your going to get there mate but i have a Qosmo by Tobisha and it's a nice little setup but cost near 3k...

 

Asus have a nice array nowadays tho so you may wanna look into that.

First pick would be an Asus, best value for money than any other brand imo.

[edit] - oh an if you're feeling frisky then you could pick one up around the $1500 mark, spend the remainder on an SSD and external USB3 Case (Patriot Gauntlet is an awesome one btw) and swap out the lappy HDD for the SSD and install the lappy one in the case for any data you want. Not the most elegant solution to a speed/space issue but it'll work and with USB3 being pretty quick you shouldn't have too many issues running some apps from there. Of course if you can pick up a laptop that has space for two HDDs then you could always install the SSD as the primary and have the HDD in the secondary bay.

 

just bear in mind if you order form LBO and upgrade the HDD, you wont get the kit that has been upgraded ie. you swap out a 750Gb HDD for a 128Gb SSD, you dont get the 750Gb disk.

I wouldn't go past ASUS IMO. Mine wouldn't even be considered a gaming laptop and it's served me well for the past 3 years now. Solid build, nothing wrong, plays quite a few games but is now just outdated, good value for money.

 

I would really only consider the higher end HP's (which can be quite good for gaming), Toshiba's and ASUS with ASUS being my favourites.

+1 for xavo i would have said just under $2500 the next model up from that (saw one at jb hi fi) and almost spent all the money i had saved for my car on it but i decided to buy a second screen instead

I myself have had the Qosmio x300 for 3 years now and let me tell you this thing is a work horse. I have flogged this thing to an inch of its life and it still kicks on day in day out 24/7. No in giving this a plug letme give you a bit more info, one of the first serious gaming laptops ever to come out and at around a starting price of 5k this is a little outta reach of the normal consumer. What you need to realize is this lappy came out with DDR3 ram, dual core and a 9700m nvidia card when this range was all new and the rage. Most of my mates that have pc systems have all had the same era cards. Ebay is your friend in this case, bought mine for just a little over 2k, well worth it. I play parma on an outdated system that doesn't meet the recommended required but it just works like a tropper and gives me little trouble.

Speaking of the other part of laptop which will help make playing games more of fun, screen is at the first place. Screen with higher resolution will be beneficial to do everything on the laptop. This will allow windows to fit on the screen. Playing games in non-native resolution on a 1080p will be better than in native resolution on a 720p display. For example, you can choose Sager NP8130 with the 1920 x 1080 display and play game at 1280 x 720.

Now, back to graphics card, always try to find one which will possibly still meet your need in the future, at least one year ahead as long as the price is in your budget range. Screens’ quality keeps advancing and graphics card must follow it for a better performance. You could have previously thought NVIDIA GT 555M was superb for the M14X’s 1366 x 768 resolution. But today, it will no longer be so. The future system may even require the minimum GPU of 8800/9800 GT. If now you have the 560M, pictures will look sharper at Medium/High of 1080p, still better than the performance of the 55M at 768p. One year ahead, while the Nvidia GTX 560M becomes average at Medium/High of 1600 x 900 you could imagine how the 555M would look like. It will be below system requirements, play games at lower than 768p with the best settings at medium
