This is prolly aimed more at the Admin/Kindros types out there, but how hard is it to setup a BF2 game server? I've got a couple of extra PCs at the mo built from some bits, i have my main rig, a 2ndry rig (or for mates who pop round n want a game - is my old machine with a new mobo) and a 3rd machine i've been playing round with some labs on.

The last one i'll be setting up as a file/print/media server and was thinking of installing a couple of game servers on it for some old classics me n my mates like to play:

- BF2 (as well as a few mods, maybe PR but def AIX)

- BFV

- C&C Generals

- C&C3 (if its possible)

- SC

just to name a few. spec is:

Athlon x2 5000+

4Gb ram

500Gb primary, 2 x 1Tb secondaries

From what i've seen spec wise it should be able to handle running the game servers, am not planning on having more than one (at most two) running at any one time so it 'should' be okay. Am more interested in the setup of said servers etc.

Cheers :hi:

easy peasy - even in the bloated windows enviroment :)

yeah was thinking of loading W2k8 Server but found a copy of Ubuntu Server i might try out.

do the server clients (for the BF games anyway) come on the media or do you have to dl them?

nah you have to download the server for each.

gimme access and i can set em up if you have trouble.

you don't have to run Ubuntu server on its own if you wish to familiarize yourself with it - get the desktop GUI version if you want to tinker a bit (it will still run 10x better consume less resources and be more stable than Win).

get the full ISO from here the ISO will make it easier if you are new to it all.

its not desktop for every user, yet but it is getting there point n click wise - i don't use the GUI versions myself but have set them up for others, i personally prefer Debian for servers but do have a couple on Ubuntu (which is Debian based) and Ubuntu is a great place to start learning.

just remember apt-get and grep are your friends ;)

Everyone will be hosting home game servers when we all get 100mbps NBN fibre to the Home.

As for the server question; it really depends on the game and its age as to how well it works with server hardware.

Its known fact that Source Engine and Battlefield 2 servers run better on Linux and AMD processor.

Most game server providers use Intel cpu's due to their higher clock speed than AMD for hosting both newer and older game servers not optimized for multicore support.

Ofcourse, you can always go down the Bahlye path of "lets use windows because command line is too hard". :p
